Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas

The day after my birthday, I had a few friends celebrate with me with dinner at Turquoise Grill and drinks afterwards.

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Olive Oil Dip

Olive Oil & Herb Mixture Dip | free

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Shepherd's Bread

Shepherd’s Bread | free

Not pictured is the Hummus [garbanzo beans pureed with tahini paste, lemon juice, and garlic] | $4.75 which was surely delicious. It was more grainy than smooth but I didn’t mind that. I shared it with everyone at the table so that I had room for the big meal.

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Adana Kebab Platter

Adana Kebab Platter [world-famous blended mixture of spicy ground beef and ground lamb tucked on a flat shish and grilled to perfection. served with our homemade lavash flat bread, bulgur pilaf and piyaz (Turkish bean salad)] | $10.95

I don’t see the bread on my dish and don’t remember having it so that’s a bummer. But this dish is definitely worth the money. The beef and lamb is very moist and soft and the whole dish is really filling.

The price is pretty high compared to Pasha’s Mediterranean Grill so I think I’d rather stick with Pasha’s, my all time favourite Greek/Mediterranean place.

Little Woodrow's | Houston, Texas | Blue Moon

We went to Little Woodrow’s afterward where Michelle bought me a mug of Blue Moon. Yum! The other mug full is hers. I believe she got XX.

C25K: Week 5 – Run 2

June 15, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

I did it! Only one step closer to the end. Today’s challenging run was a total of thrity one minutes of exercise with sixteen minutes of running.

I seriously thought I was going to die in the last few minutes of the first run. In my head, I kept thinking, how can I do eight minutes? That’s ridiculous. I’ve never run that long unless it has to do with sports and even then I’m huffing and puffing. My reply to myself was that after this, I only have one run left and I’d be done for the day. When the second run came all I could think was how I’m almost done. The second run was much easier when I had that mentality and even had less huffing a puffing.

When I run I make little destination spots. I feel really accomplished when I get there before my running period ends and I have to start walking. I’m happy to say that I actually ran farther than where I had my destinations. In return, I kept making a new destination until the time was up. This really helps me get further and think less about the burning sensation in my legs. I’m not sure if it’s because my old and new injuries are flaring up or because my shoes aren’t right for running … or both?

I’m scared for Friday when I have no walks except for warm up and cool down but I know I can do it!

What made me even happier was coming back from my run and seeing a tiny package with my name on it!

Sam Ash Guitar Strings | Earthwood

My A string on the guitar popped on me when I was playing a week and a half ago. I recently bought these online at Sam Ash. They have fast free ground shipping! They are very trusted and has been the only store I go to for any acoustic guitar needs ever since I started learning a year ago. They sell other instruments and accessories, too. I’m not sure these were the ones I bought last time but nonetheless, I’m excited to put them on and play again! Ahh!

Survey #1

June 15, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

At the moment, I’m at work but things are still being set up so I can’t really do my job until that gets done. Think I’ll do this to pass my time here at the office. I got this off of Rachael’s Happy Healthy Runner. You can read her responses here.

A. Age: I just turned 22 last month. I’m getting old!

B. Bed size: Depends on where I am. I have a twin bed here at home in my room but when Brudda’s in Dallas I sleep in his room, a double, which is also the size I have up in college.

C. Chore you hate: Mopping, vacuuming, throwing out the trash … pretty much everything.

D. Dogs: I love them! I really want a Shiba Inu but they are expensive. My family got a border collie, Rocky, last summer. Brudda and Tammy, each have a dog. One’s a Yorkie they got in 2007, Krypto, and another is a chihuahua mix they got in 2009?, Pluto. Love them to death but I really cannot wait for my own dog. Until then, those three are considered mine.

E. Essential start to your day: Usual morning routine: brush teeth, wash face, change, pack lunch, and head out the door in less than 30 minutes. Simple and fast.

F. Favorite color: I don’t think I have one. I’m in love with so many colors … maroon, purple, robin egg blue, kelly green, etc.

G. Gold or silver: This is hard … since I like silver-gold. (It looks silver.) Too bad it’s very expensive. So I guess I’ll go with silver.

H. Height: 5′ 7″. Is it weird I wish I taller?

I. Instruments you play: I’ve played the violin since 2nd grade but stopped right when high school ended. I self-taught myself the guitar a year ago and still sound terrible. I dabble on the keyboard. Oh, and in 5th grade, everyone had to play the recorder so I got that also.

J. Job title: I’m a student in college but in the summer I’m a Geological Technical Assistant/Data Manager.

K. Kids: Nopeee. I’m nowhere near that.

L. Live: It’s easier to say Houston. During school time I live in San Antonio.

M. Mom’s name: Her American name is Joyce.

N. Nicknames: Hawk, Cripple, Mellie, etc.

O. Overnight hospital stays: I never stayed overnight in a hospital. I hate hospitals. My uncle was there when he was diagnosed with cancer but I was too young then to stay there overnight.

Houston Morning Traffic

A typical morning in Houston
via

P. Pet peeve: I have many pet peeves but since Rachael talked about traffic, I’ll put in my two cents. People are not courteous to one another and a lot of times cause their own crashes due to carelessness. You are not smart when you are trying to get to the freeway and cut everyone off because you don’t want to wait. Others don’t want to wait either and you cause even more traffic for everyone else that is trying to take the feeder. If I was the one you’re trying to cut off, I wouldn’t let you through.

Q. Quote from a movie: “I love you a million Swedish fish.” – If you know where this came from I’ll love you a million Swedish fish as well.

R. Right or left handed: I’m ambidextrous. Though others would tell you differently since my left-hand does produce funky handwriting.

S. Siblings: Dos. That’s two for the non-Spanish speakers.

T. Time you wake up: During work time, 5am – 5:30am. During school time it ranges from when my first class starts. On weekends it depends on what I have planned. Most of the time I’m awake by 10am.

U. Underwear: Under there?

Bitter Melon

Gross .. this is what a bitter melon looks like.
via

V. Vegetables you dislike: Bitter melon. Detest! That’s the first thing that came into my mind.

W. What makes you run late: Traffic. I’m pretty good at getting to places early or on time. I hate when traffic puts me back.

X. X-Rays you’ve had: My teeth and recently my foot. Fractured my metatarsal that’s located in my foot from basketball. I didn’t even know until I fell down the stairs and couldn’t walk six months later. I think it’s still fractured but it’s not that painful so I’m still running on it. Maybe that’s not a smart idea.

Y. Yummy food you make: I really like making my Chicken Pesto Pasta Salad. Yum!

Z. Zoo – favorite animal: I love monkeys!! Though I don’t think I’m a big fan of zoos.

That just took some time off my work hours. Only one more hour until I get off! Today is a running day. Yay! C25K: Week 5, Day 2 …. HERE I COME!

Cheddar’s Casual Cafe| Katy, Texas

June 14, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

On May 13th, June got off work and Brudda came down from Dallas to have a breakfast/lunch celebration at Cheddar’s before the dinner celebration of my birthday.

Cheddar's Casual Cafe| Katy, Texas | Triple Treat Sampler

Triple Treat Sampler [a combination of beef, bean, and cheese nachos plus your choice of two others: loaded potato skins, crispy chicken tenders or mozzarella cheese sticks] | $7.99.

We chose the loaded potato skins and crispy chicken tenders. The nachos could do with more jalapenos and I realized I’m not a big fan of potato skins. But overall, everything was delicious. I will be coming back for those super crunchy on the outside but juicy on the inside chicken tenders.

Cheddar's Casual Cafe| Katy, Texas | Grilled Salmon

Grilled Salmon [choose grilled, blackened or bourbon glazed salmon. Served on a bed of savory rice with two sides] | $9.99

June chose her salmon to be grilled and ordered a side of mashed potatoes and coleslaw. She liked it a lot and even offered me some and oh my goodness the mashed potatoes – so moist and fluffy.

shepherdspie_cheddars_mwm

Shepard’s Pie [a complete meal of seasoned beef and vegetables in a savory sauce, classically topped with homemade mashed potatoes] | $7.29

I’ve never had Shepard’s pie before so I had to steal some from Brudda. I loved it and definitely want to go back to get my own dish of it. I would order more mashed potatoes on the side though because I felt there wasn’t enough.

Cheddar's Casual Cafe| Katy, Texas | Fish Tacos

Fish Tacos [hand breaded, fried, white fish in flour tortillas, with roasted corn slaw and cajun tartar sauce. Two tacos served with choice of one side. Fresh off the grill version – also available] | $6.49

I got them fresh off the grill and there was enough flavouring that I didn’t even need the sauce! The fries weren’t all that amazing though which was a total bummer.

Shepard’s pie, chicken tenders, and a whole lot of mashed potatoes please! I’ll be coming back.

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas

June 14, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

It’s very rare that I find people that speak my native tongue so I was excited when Nancy, Elaine, Henry, and I decided to hangout on May 4th at Yard House. It was happy hour time so everything on their Happy Hour menu was 1/2 off!!

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas | Spicy Tuna Roll

Spicy Tuna Roll [seared rare ahi, avocado, edamame, cucumber with wasabi soy sauce] | ~$6

If you’ve never had their Spicy Tuna Roll, you’re missing out! The name can be misleading because I bet you’d imagine it was wrapped in seaweed. They’d be better off calling it a Spicy Tuna Tower with the way they stack it. I’m drooling just thinking about it!

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas | Classic Sliders

Classic Sliders | ~ $5

I always heard sliders are extra fattening (delicious) than a regular burgers but I didn’t care since we were nearing the end of the school year. It was surprising that I as a fry lover wasn’t a big fan of them but as a bread hater I really liked the buns.

If they served the sliders with a side of spicy tuna roll, I think I’d be most happy. As happy as being able to spend time with lovely people.
