Fat People Are Harder To Kidnap

June 18, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

I went home at noon since plans with Sissy didn’t work out with her having to leave ASAP for a road trip to Colorado. I’ll see if she’ll pay for my breakfast and manicure next time. hehe

Bumper Sticker: Fat People Are Harder to Kidnap 2

I was stuck at a stop light and saw this little gem on the back of someone’s car. Hilarious and so true. I’ve never heard a kidnapping case with fat people so …

Anyway, after dinner, June and I had a sweet tooth for ice cream. Since we were both too lazy to drive, we nixed our original TCBY run idea and went to Walgreens instead.

Movie Night Goodies

Since we live close to one, we took a walk and figured we deserved our goodies of chips, ice cream, and Redbox movies: Prada to Nada and Just Go With It.

Magnum Ice Cream Bar

Mmm … Magnum Ice Cream. The ice cream I ate when I lived in Hong Kong. We couldn’t find it when we moved to America. I believe they recently started selling it here so I snatched four. One for me, Mum, Dad, and June. Sissy would be so jealous!

Magnum Ice Cream Bar 2

Ain’t she a beaut? I ate this as slowly as I could. For almost $3 a piece, I had to enjoy it! The reason I love this ice cream so much is because of their chocolate. It’s so thick that when you bite into it you can hear that cracking … not too sure how to describe it so just buy one and see for yourself!

Magnum Ice Cream Bar 3

Branded an “M” for ME!

What – you think I wasn’t going to run after eating that fatty ice cream. Please. Layout of the run: Warm up 5, Run 20, Cool down 5. Let’s just say the whole time I was running I was saying “Holy Devlin!”

Have you seen Just Go With It? It’s about a doctor who pretends to be married to pick up chicks and his receptionist was always by his side. Even when he needed to use her and her kids to get a hot young girl. It’s very hilarious and you laugh pretty much the WHOLE ENTIRE time. You will love it just as much as I did. Anyway, Holy Devlin came from that movie meaning, holy shit.

I kept telling myself. Three more, Two more, Last one. I split the 20 minutes in my head into 5 minutes each since the lady does tell you when every 5 minutes has passed. And I realized I ran faster and farther than when doing intervals. I think that’s the whole point? Not too sure. When I got to the last 10 seconds of running I went full out and ran like a deer – prancing.

Mum said I looked like I was dying. Thanks, Mum. So encouraging.

Time to relax and watch From Prada to Nada. A story about a two girls who were downright rich. One was book smart aspiring to be a lawyer while the other uses her looks to get what she wants. Everything changes when their dad dies and they find out they are bankrupt. Moving into the new lifestyle of the poor, will they survive?

Not too sure how this movie will be since it’s not on big screen but anything is good right now.

*Edit: I actually loved this movie. However many stars other people give … I give it five out of five. It was very heart warming with all the family love. No matter how obnoxious that one girl is, she always had someone there for her – family.

Night everyone. Hope your Friday went well!

Appreciation

June 17, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

We always take life for granted and think we’re invincible. But a story I just read and a video I just watched put everything in a new perspective for me. I’m grateful for my life. The fact that I *knock on wood* haven’t been severely injured. With a loving family and friends by my side. Shelter and food. My own car to get around in. Etc. Etc. The story made me realize that I have it good. Much more than a lot of other people in the world. I will try more to appreciate the little things and complain a lot less. Here’s the story paraphrased by what I read:

Madeline Mitchell

Meet Madeline Mitchell, a contestant in the Miss Alabama USA pageant. As she was going home one day in September 2008 everything changed. She hit a deer and lost control of her car causing her to go off a 40-foot ravine while the car caught on fire.

She wouldn’t have been alive today if it wasn’t for the Walmart truck driver, Gary Lewellen. He went in to put the fire out and reassured her she would be okay. And sure enough, she was air-lifted to the University of Alabama hospital.

For 12 days, she was stuck in a coma while her parents watched over her. When she woke up, her question was “Am I going to be able to compete in the pageant?

Doctors told her she may never walk again since her leg was broken in 12 places, broken ribs, etc. And people told her she would never be able to compete again due to her many scars.

But she proved them wrong. After months of struggling, she indeed walked again and participated in 2009 Miss Alabama USA pageant but failed to make top 10. She didn’t let that stop her and continued to participate last year and won.

This Sunday she will be competing in the Miss USA at the Miss USA 2011 pageant in Las Vegas. Go here for a more in-depth story and a heartwarming, tear-jerking video of her interview.

I know a lot of people think beauty pageant contestants are jerks, high maintenance, rich snobs, etc. but after watching this they are just like us. Real people. They are not invincible no matter how put together they are. I’m not going to lie. I always wished I was in a beauty pageant because they are so pretty and put together!

Take time out of your day to appreciate everything you have.

San Dong | Houston, Texas

On May 27th, Mum and June and I went to San Dong. Best dumpling place ever. We ordered a few plates to share and took the rest home for Dad and used it as part of our dinner. Yum! I love leftovers.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Peanut Mixture

June wanted this mixture of peanuts, carrots, and zucchini with a slimy sauce. The slime deferred me from liking it.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Pig Ears

Pig Ears

I know what you’re thinking … GROSS?! But don’t hate it til you try it. I wish people would eat it before they judge. Sometimes it’s better than they think! It’s just your mind playing a joke on you because if you don’t try it, you’re missing out!

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Wenchou Won Ton Soup

Wenchou Won Ton Soup | $4.75

Mum’s favourite. The wontons had very thin wrapper and the meat inside was pretty soft. I ate a lot of the bok choy though.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Beef Soup Dumplings

Beef Soup Dumplings [12 dumplings] | $5.25

The soup has more flavor of a beef stock. Because these are dumplings, their wrapper is thicker and with a bit of a chew to it. It was good but the soup was too salty for my taste. June loved this one the most.

San Dong | Houston, Texas| Leek Pork Dumplings

Leek Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25

This is like the previoius dish but without the soup (and more dumplings!). This was the first dish I ever had when I first came here and remains my favourite.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Cabbage Pork Dumplings

Cabbage Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25

Until I tried this! Much juicier than the leek pork dumplings. My new favorite.

Just doing this post makes me want to go here this weekend. I would definitely order the Cabbage Pork Dumplings – but not to share.

Why, Oh, Why?!

June 16, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Work tends to tempt us with lunch but I resisted like a good, little girl. I ate my leftovers and didn’t let the delicious aromas get to me. Winning.

I came home and my mum was making Kimchi Soup for dinner. Even better. Ate dinner with mum and June while Rocky sat close by. Life is going swell. Oh here’s a picture of the dogs I mentioned before.

Rocky, Krypto, Pluto

Rocky, Krypto, Pluto

Aren’t they cuties?!

I sat down to change my B string. Previously I said my A broke but it was really my B. Whoops! But yeah … that’s when everything went sour. As I was winding up my string it popped on me. WHY?!! Again?! Puhlease! Now I have to reorder new strings. It sucks they come in a pack and not individuals. I think I’ll ask my friend to change them for me. I should learn though but I have no money to keep repurchasing packets and packets of strings.

For those that are by the coast, it’s hurricane season! Make sure you have a plan! I was talking about it with the two co-workers that stopped by to chat. We talked about what we had to do if anything major happened like contact your line manager.

Do you have a plan for hurricane season?

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas

Sissy, Brudda, and Tammy were home and so on May 17th the whole family went to check out Red Oak Grill.

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas | Stuffed Jalapenos

Stuffed Jalapenos | $3.99

Not spicy enough and the cheese was pretty sharp and we also did away with the ranch dressing.

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas | Gyro

Gyro [savory beef and lamb slices with creamy Tzatziki sauce, served with Tabouleh and Hummus] | $11.89

The beef and lamb were moist but I think I went on a bad day because it was bland. But then again, I could be comparing it to Pasha’s. The hummus was nothing to rave about. But the thing that ruined the whole plate for me was the Tabbouleh due to the mint flavour. I whacked it off my plate onto my dad’s. He seemed to love it but he eats anything.

The food wasn’t appealing enough for me to come back in the future.
