The Pearl Life

January 4, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

San Antonio Reunion Pearl Texas

Started the year off right by seeing some of my favourites this past weekend. I haven’t visited since back in April so it was long overdue. This is the dinner group that came out regardless of the freezing cold and pouring rain. So thankful we were able to catch up.

Le Peep | San Antonio, Texas

Le Peep

I literally woke up and started driving at 5am. No traffic. So freaking nice. I actually arrived earlier than what Liliana, Patricia, Daniel, and I agreed on. So I sat waiting for them in the car during which I started planning out my following week. I’m one of those people who takes their physical planner everywhere.

If you haven’t already noticed, I tend to order more than I can take but everything is pretty good. There’s a Le Peep in Houston so I might check it out now that’s I’ve actually tried it and it’s okie dokie but I think the one in Houston had a way lower rating. Hmm …

Patricia Christmas Present 2015

After breakfast, we drove back to Patricia’s house so I could drop off my car where she gave me the rest of my Christmas present. A new mug to add to my collection for when I move and a necklace.

Bird Bakery | San Antonio, Texas

I forgot how much I loved San Antonio stores are so close. We walked around and ended up here for dessert. It’s actually a place I’ve always wanted to try but never ended up at. So lucky that I have bubbies that would drive me so far away just for dessert! Is it sad to say I ordered the cupcakes only because I wanted to take a cool picture? Sad life? … But I did try a bite of each and my favourite is the lemon cupcake and the elvis cupcake. But they’re not so amazing that I would come back. I would come back for the sea salt caramel latte though. That was bomb. And the fact they did some latte art is a win. And I creeped on other people’s drinks and saw various designs so that’s a win.

Cured | San Antonio, Texas

We had an early dinner. Upon arriving to San Antonio in the morning, I was told to pick a place at The Pearl. I wanted to go to all of them. No jokes. But we ended up here and it was literally the funniest dinner we’ve ever had. Notice I said funniest. Not funnest. Though it was one of the funnest dinners. The Pearl is an upscale area and so things cost more for less amount of food, majority of the time. It doesn’t bother me since I don’t usually go to upscale places so I was willing. Plus we went when it was happy hour so we got a discount on some of the goodies. Travis and I were winning since we somehow ordered food that came with a lot.

Deschutes Blake Butte Porter – I actually tried this beer back when I was at the brewery in Oregon. One of my favourites. So glad I got to have two of them at dinner. Oh yeah, wild over here.

Quail Legs – This is actually Travis’ order. but many people at dinner ordered them too. So bomb. It’s like fried chicken but a million times better.

Beer Can Mussels [homemade tousso ham with whipped aioli fries] – A whole pot of mussels. I’d say it was pretty great for the price. The fries here are amazing.

Seriously, it’s expensive for every day type of meal, but for once in a while, I would totally come here all the time for happy hour. The beer with quail legs and fries. I’m set. I am hoping to hit up all The Pearl places one day soon. One of my goals for life … I aim high. Obvi.

Mellie Dee, Travis, Andy, Jakob, Patricia, Liliana

We then headed over to Bakery Lorianne where I spent a major amount of time catching up with Travis. We aren’t really phone people. We’ve always been face to face and I guess seeing him gave us a lot to catch up on. Now that I think about it, I don’t think I’ve seen him for a whole year. Whenever I was in town, he was out and we just kept missing each other. Glad he decided to come out and literally stayed all night with me even though he worked all day and worked the next day as well. Great friend right there.

Mellie Dee, Andy, Travis, Thuy

When Bakery Lorianne was closing, we all walked over to Local Coffee where we spent another couple hours just talking nonsense. I had plans to meet up with Cantu later that day at Thirsty Horse and so they waited with me. I’m glad I got to spend some time to catch up with Cantu but after awhile, it was Travis and I talking about how much guys suck. haha I miss my next door psychologist but he helped me see a lot of things I was blinded about.

Thirsty Horse Taco Truck | San Antonio, Texas

After throwing back a few drinks and the clock almost turned to two am, we left and bought some tacos at the taco truck outside the country bar. I miss just being able to buy these kinda things everywhere I turned. We headed home and stayed up a bit to talk about some randomness and drama that happened and went to bed.

The Egg & I | San Antonio, Texas

The Egg & I
9985 I-10 West
San Antonio, Texas 78230

Only sleeping for a couple hours, I was up and at it again. Andy and Jakob wanted to do brunch, but let’s be honest, it was a lunch. So Patricia found a place and we had a grand time.

Texas Skillet – These potatoes are bomb. Not a big fan of the egg since it was too oily for me. And I got toast instead of the muffin (best decision ever). I don’t like grains that much but this was the best toast I’ve ever had!

Felt nice to be surrounded by them again and we talked about my moving back. I mean, it’s great when I’m here visiting, but if I wasn’t, would I be so bored? I really doubt we’d hang out all the time, yah know? But we did make plans to travel somewhere in the beginning of the year. I’m ready.

Here’s to collecting memories and not things! So far, I think I’m doing well on that.

A Whole New …. Year

January 3, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

A whole new [year]
A hundred thousand things to see
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back
To where I used to be
A Whole New World :: Aladdin

How was everyone’s new year celebrations? I hope everyone had a great one surrounded by lovelies!

I’ve always made sure to go home in time to celebrate the new year with my parents and June. Meaning, I’ve never actually celebrated a new year with anyone but them because I feel bad for leaving them behind. But this time around, I actually said yes to an invitation to a near year’s eve party and I’m glad I did! But before I get to the party, let’s talk about dinner with Melissa Z.

I went to her apartment where we got semi ready then headed to:

True Food Kitchen | Houston, Texas | Sangria and Tuna Wrap

True Food Kitchen
1700 Post Oak Blvd
Houston, Texas 77056
(281) 605-2505
http://truefoodkitchen.com

Farmers Market Sangria [spiced brandy, citrus, red wine, seasonal fruit smash] | $10

Nothing too special with the drank. Just like any other sangria I’ve ever had. Definitely not better than the one I usually get from The Next Door Lounge but it did the trick in getting my pre-game started.

Seared Spicy Wild Caught Tuna Wrap [radish, avocado, mint, snow pea, cashew, sesame, wasabi aioli] | $15

My taste buds were on fire. FIRE. Not in the spicy kind of way but the holy-cow-on-a-stick kind of feeling. My taste buds were tingling. It’s like a sushi … in a wrap. So freaking good. I got a side of sweet potato hash but after eating the insides of the wrap, I was full enough. Seriously. SO. FREAKING. GOOD.

Mellie Dee and Melissa Z. NYE Party

We headed back to Melissa Z.’s to change into our partying attire and fixed our makeup then got an UBER to Alyssa’s.

Mellie Dee and Alyssa NYE Party

Alyssa, my high school bestie, was throwing one at her abode. Her abode is freaking modern and awesomely cool. It’s like something you see in movies! IN MOVIES! So freaking swanky.

Mellie Dee Alyssa Melissa Z. NYE Party

Melissa Z. and I got there early so that we could do a quick catch up with Alyssa and meet Cody before everyone came. I miss that little lady and wish we had more time together. Hopefully we get to see each other more in the upcoming future. It’s crazy how she works in my building at work yet we only pass by one another once in a few months. As for Cody, he works on my floor! How crazy is that?!

NYE Party at Alyssa's

When people started arriving, I played a game as to whether “that person” works with me. And guess what … majority do! These are just some of the party peeps we mainly talked to. A majority of them work on my floor! Yet we’ve never talked to one another. Just passed by one another. Ah … that is the world of corporate. They’re a cool bunch of poopies and we made plans to do lunch or something in the future. We’ll see if that actually happens. Still awesome that I got to meet them.

I would say my first new year eve party was successful. I had a lot of fun and met a lot of new people which was on my new year’s resolutions. Already on the right path. Holla!

I slept in the day after and just relaxed with Rizzo and had a family dinner that night. I spent most of the day looking at houses/townhomes to buy. Maybe I’ll take the plunge soon especially after seeing Alyssa’s place. But with how oil and gas is … maybe I should wait?

20 Things I Learned in 2015

January 2, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

or continue to remember in 2015 …

  1. It’s never too late to do the things you missed out on the first time around.
  2. Accept people for who they are, and if you can’t, then perhaps change your perspective. No one is boring.
  3. If you’re still angry, it’s too soon to talk.
  4. Life is too short. Say you’re sorry, say how you feel, show your love before it’s too late.
  5. There is always room for improvement.
  6. People will always tell you their opinion; what matters is what you do with it.
  7. Relationships will fail and it will hurt but you will learn from it.
  8. Not everyone deserves a second chance.
  9. No one is your competition. Cheering others on is way more fun than tearing them down.
  10. It’s okay to put yourself first.
  11. You can’t force friendships. If one is meant to be, no distance or time apart changes anything.
  12. Your parents are people too. As you get older, they too are getting older.
  13. Breaking up with negative friends is hard but ultimately freeing. Only surround yourself with people who allow you to be you and help you grow to be a better version of yourself.
  14. Take chances and if it goes wrong, at least you know you tried.
  15. De-stress, relax, and unplug.
  16. Traveling is always worth it but if a flight is super duper cheap, it’s up to no good. I’m looking at you, Spirit Airlines.
  17. Collect memories, not things.
  18. Giving without expectation will always uplift your mood as well as others.
  19. It’s okay to not have plans during the weekends. Take time to relax and enjoy doing what you love instead.
  20. You’re lucky to be alive and to have all that you have.

2016 New Year Resolutions

December 31, 2015 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Recap of 2015 New Year Resolutions

  • Blog more
    • Actually did pretty well … given a lot of the middle posts were private. Blogging got me through a lot of my thoughts and though I wish I didn’t post some, it’s too late to take back but it’s taught me a lot as well.
  • Focus on health and fitness
    • Well … the health thing I got down. The fitness due to past injuries took a while longer. Being able to lose weight this year is a goal I never thought I’d achieve. But I did.
  • Do what I love
    • Though I had a lot of downs, I did have many ups. I got to do a lot of things I loved and a lot of last second decisions have been some of the best. I’m still learning to not freak out when plans don’t follow through though.

My 2016 New Year Resolutions

  • Continue weight loss – or more specifically toning
  • Stay in touch and spend more time with family and friends
  • Meet new people
  • Never stop learning
  • Travel to somewhere I’ve never been
  • Unplug more and just enjoy life

We’ll see how these resolutions go. Fingers crossed!
