McAlister’s Deli | San Antonio, Texas

January 24, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Amanda and I were long overdue for a hang out and decided to go to McAlister’s Deli Friday the 21st along with Allie (her cousin) and Traci.

Just a close up to show you just how freaking gorgeous it is.

The food was freaking delicious and is now my go to deli. I had a lot of fun catching up with them and they really took away all the pain I was having with the things going on with my life.

Golden Wok | San Antonio, Texas

January 16, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

AV and I got hungry around dinner time last night and he felt like Chinese food so we decided to go to Golden Wok.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Hot & Sour Soup

Hot & Sour Soup [chicken, crabmeat, bamboo shoots, black mushrooms, tofu, and egg prepared in a rich spicy chicken broth] | $3.49

We both started out with soups. Some Chinese restaurants tend to mess this up but this place has some good soup.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Singapore Noodles

Singapore Noodles [thin rice noodles stir-fried with cabbage, carrots, scallions, bell pepper, and egg with curry flavor with beef] | $9.29

I ordered it with beef but you could get it with chicken, shrimp, scallops, or a combination of it all. This tasted like what I usually eat back in Houston. Nothing to rave about.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Sesame Chicken

Sesame Chicken [chicken with sesame] | $8.29

AV’s chicken came with steamed rice. The chicken pure, white breast and was really juicy on the inside.

Of course, nothing beats Houston’s Chinatown but if I was to crave Chinese food, I would go here to be partially satisfied.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas

Richard came into town to visit Jenny yesterday so we woke up and decided to try out Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki. The atmosphere was really peaceful with simple decorations. Their giant windows were enough to bring just the right amount of lighting into the restaurant giving it a romantic ambiance with dim lighting and light music playing in the background.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Miso Soup

Miso Soup [a soy bean paste soup with scallions, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and seaweed] | free

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Seaweed Salad

Hiyashi Wakame | $4.99

A fancy name for seaweed salad and for the cost, I’d say it’s worth it. They pile it on and Jenny wanted more when it was gone.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Sauces

Top: Lemon Soy Sauce • Hot Sauce • Spicy Mayo • Eel Sauce

The hot sauce was the best out of the bunch. It was a hint of sweet and spicy mixed together.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Hand Grenade

Hand Grenade [fresh sushi rice wrapped with shrimp and nori seaweed, topped with fresh scallop and spicy mayonnaise, baked and drizzled with our special sweet soy sauce] | $2.99

This was my favorite out of everything I ate. It’s pretty expensive but I would probably need to order fifteen to get full but I would so go back to get just this! Oh, if it counts for anything, Richard said it’s his favorite too.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Jalapeno Firecracker

Jalapeno Firecracker [fresh jalapeno stuffed with crab cream cheese, tempura fried and drizzled with our spicy mayonnaise and special sweet soy sauce] | $1.99

You can see Richard is already trying to cut through the jalapeno. Jenny kept saying it was too spicy so Richard had to finish it up. End result, not worth it.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Fried Philly Roll

Fried Philly Roll [fresh salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber, tempura and topped with sweet soy and scallions] | $6.49

A regular Philadelphia roll … fried. I thought this was pretty good and it’s cute how the sauce makes it look like a zebra print.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Fiji Roll

Fiji Roll [crab, cream cheese, tempura crumbs, tempura with spicy crab on top] | $7.19

Much better than the Fried Philly Roll.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Plaza Roll

Plaza Roll [salmon, tuna, white fish and avocado, tempura and topped with Masago, scallions, spicy mayo and sweet sauce] | $10.99

This was so worth the price. So much fish in one bite and the Masago makes it that much better. I would eat Masago by the bowl if I could.

Kumori Sushi & Teppanyaki | San Antonio, Texas | Kalypso Roll

Kalypso Roll [sashimi grade salmon, cream cheese, and crab topped with shrimp, avocado, and masago] | $7.69

Richard seemed to like this the best. I was too full to eat anymore so I didn’t get to try it.

This was a real sushi experience. Usually, when I get sushi I get a bento box or a sushi boat. This was something different and it was perfect. After this we went to watch The Green Hornet. I suggest you make it to the theater. It’s a funny movie.

Alamo Cafe | San Antonio, Texas

January 9, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I came back to college a day early to pick Jenny up from the airport. Travis and AV decided to accompany me so that we could all grab a bite to eat at Alamo Cafe after.

Alamo Cafe | San Antonio, Texas | Fajita Dinner

Fajita Dinner [2 soft tacos, choice of beef, chicken, or mixed, rice, beans, guacamole, and pico de gallo] | ~$10

They gave us free chips and tortillas. The tortillas are homemade, fluffy and soft, and oh so wonderful in my mouth! They give you butter to slather on it but I ate mine plain because it was that good.

For the fajita dinner, I ordered one beef and one chicken. The beef was like any other beef but the chicken, oh the chicken! It was juicy and tender. If I ever come here again I’ll nix the beef and get two chicken fajitas.

It’s a good place to try if you want some great tex-mex.

Tokyo One Sushi & Grill Buffet | Houston, Texas

Tokyo One Sushi & Grill Buffet | Houston, Texas

Last night, Mum, June, and I had a feast of seafood as a last dinner with family before heading back to college at Tokyo One Sushi & Grill Buffet. If you love seafood then I’m told this is the place for you. It felt like a waste of money for me though since I’m not a big lover of seafood and buffets. Each person costs $25 on Friday nights.

For ambiance, the tables were very tiny for the three of us. Our plates were hanging off the edge and after trying practically everything they offered I have come to a conclusion that this place is so-so. There was nothing to rave about other than the sea bass. It’s my go to fish now but I’m told it’s super expensive.

Tip: The only way to get ice cream is to ask your server.
