2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine

August 23, 2020 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Big Brothers Big Sisters Close and Match

My Big Brothers Big Sisters Match closed this week. She had to move and a new school means not being in the program anymore. It’s been a bummer. Although we didn’t have much in common we got along so well.

On Tuesday I had my reinterview and by Wednesday I was rematched. Our coordinator thinks we’re an even better match but we’ll have to wait and see how we pan out. I’m excited and hope this one will last.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Mellie Dee & Rizzo

Work is starting to move to Microsoft Teams which means the use of video might happen more. Top left was my look during a team meeting. My hair is so long. Told Sissy I’m going to see how long I can get it then donate it when I have to go back to the office. I have been trimming the dead ends but I might give in soon and chop it all off.

Rizzo loves sitting in the sun when I let him out during the afternoon. I’m guessing because he practically sleeps all day. His favourite is still snuggles with me. On good days he gets so close like this and warms my heart.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Chikfila, McDonald's, Pizza Hut

We’ve ordered out a few times. Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s (twice cuz we fatties), and Pizza Hut.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Home Cooking

I did do a lot of homecooking though. Working from home has big perks. Stuffed salmon and veggies is still my number one dish. Just wish I had some pilaf to complete it.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Houston Restaurant Week | Babin's | JJ

Since I was off Friday I went and picked up Babin’s Seafood for Houston Restaurant Week and headed over to Mallory’s. Beth came over as well. Their etouffee was so bomb. Their gumbo needs some help though. It tasted like muddy water with shrimp. There was no veggies like other gumbo’s I’ve had. Definitely not worth it.

JJ was busy the whole time I was there which means he’s growing up! Mallory have me some spiked iccees and test tube shots. The test tube is DELICIOUS! Super sweet but still good. We looked at houses online for me and joked after a few more test tubes, I’d be signing on the dotted line.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | June's Birthday | Zoe's Kitchen

Saturday night, we celebrated June’s birthday early. Sissy and BIL came over with Zoe’s Kitchen. They ate at the kitchen table and we are in the living room. I opted to make myself a steak, veggies and mashed potatoes since I had to donate blood the next day. I did try their lentil soup, falafel and hummus though and all is ever as tasty.

We played Houseparty Uno and Drawing games before video calling Brudda to sing, cut the cake, and open presents.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Daily Walks

Walks are still going strong! My step goals keep going up and it’s getting harder to meet the goal during the week day but I push on. We see so many sunrise and sunsets these past few weeks that I’ve decided sunsets are my favourite.

Rizzo has always been great off the leash. We’ve been training Rocky to be off leash and he’s doing well. The main reason is because no one and nothing is around else he’d probably haul ass to whatever he sees.

2020 | Week 23 of Quarantine | Blood Donation MD Anderson

Today after our one hour walk, shower and a quick breakfast, I was off to donate blood. I was very worried I wouldn’t pass the temperature test since I usually run hot but all was well. I was in and out in about an hour. I got jipped. Mallory and her family all got tshirts for donating but I didn’t. It is a dang good shirt too! I guess I went too early and they didn’t have them ready. I’m still bummed but I’ve had bad luck for a while so nothing new.

This week is the last week for some folks at work. Not sure how it’ll go after they’re gone and new people start but I’m ready to take on the change!

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Mellie Dee Eye Masks During Meetings

Life currently is face and eye masks during meetings since no one can see me. Sadly we’re moving from Skype to Teams and apparently people tend to turn their cameras on. That means I actually have to look presentable if that happens.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Los Cucos with Eric

On Friday, after work, I met up with Eric at Los Cucos. Ever since June and I went and sneakily ate dim sum at the restaurant, I’ve been a little more okay with it BUT as long as the ones near me are safe.

We had margaritas and fajitas. I ate all the onions and a piece of meat since he doesn’t like onions so it was a win. Plus I already had dinner plans so ordering a whole meal would have been ridiculous.

We said our goodbyes and I stopped by Mallory’s and caught up with Linda and Gary for a bit, met Oliver, Mallory’s nephew, for the first time, and spun JJ around a few times.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | The Oaks Kitchen & Bar | Katy, Texas | Mallory and Mackenzie

Mallory, Mackenzie, and I went to The Oaks Kitchen & Bar for Beth’s Baby Shower planning. There was more eating than planning which I didn’t mind since the food was delicious. I’m sure Mackenzie was not a fan of my picture taking but after Mallory made a statement about it I tried to do me without the worry. The shrimp and grits were a little funky with the sauce but their pork belly was on point, as well as their ceviche and crab wraps.

The only thing I didn’t like about this place is that they don’t follow the rules on the whole 6 ft apart and wearing masks. The servers have the masks on but it was not correctly on their face so it made me a bit nervous but I tried to shake it off. Safe to say I’ll be more careful going to places now.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Spicy Noodle Soup and Dim Sum Yums from 99 Ranch

I’m a pro at making a spicy soup! Not Kimchi soup but equally delicious and much spicier! It’s become my simple meal and sometimes I opt out of the noodles all together.

When we went and got groceries on Saturday, we bought congee, Chinese breadsticks, pig ears, seasme balls, har gow and meat as a nice snack/meal after we got home. It was nice getting some real Asian food in even though it wasn’t a lot. I never thought I’d miss Chinatown foods as much as I do.

I also did a video chat with Beth to talk about the book we both read, Confess by Colleen Hoover. It’s a pretty good book but lacks a lot of details. We’re on our second book in our mini book club. I’m almost done but stopped since Beth won’t finish anytime soon. It’s nice having someone to talk books with since I’ve never done it before. Plus, she chooses pretty good books.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Rizzo Morning and Night Walks

With all the eats come all the walks. Daily walks are still going strong and I am trying to beat my step goal that’s automatically calculated for me. That’s going well too but I wonder if it’ll just keep going up to where I can’t handle it or have enough time to do it every day.

June loves sunrise walks and I’m a lover for the sunset ones. I did force her to go with me Friday at 5:30 am since I knew I wasn’t able to get any walks in that night. I want to do more early-early walks but my family is afraid I’d get kidnap or whatever since it’s so dark out. Maybe I can sneak out and get it done. Hmm …

Houston Restaurant Week is half over! I still need to find my place to take Mum. We talked about ordering to go and eating it in the car so we can still have our one-on-one tradition. I’m also trying to get Mallory to pick something since we’ve always done one every year. We’ll see.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1

February 19, 2020 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I did my packing three hours before I had to get to the airport. I’m not too sure what’s going on with me other than feeling a bit lazy in getting packing done, not to mention, Amy and I didn’t really fully plan out our days other than making sure food was accounted for.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Houston to Phoenix | Hubcap Grill | Houston, Texas

Dad volunteered to drive me to the airport when he heard I was going so early. Nothing was opened when I got there so when Hubcap Grill opened, I went and got a small breakfast taco and water. I was pretty happy to see that I got the whole entire row to myself. I pretty much slept two and a half hours and spent the other time watching a movie.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Phoenix to San Diego | Peet's Coffee | San Diego

When we landed in Phoenix I made my walk to the other gate. I read a few chapters and watched a bit more of my movie before we finally landed in San Diego. I stopped and got a coffee cake from Peet’s Coffee since I was starving.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Westfield Shopping Mall | San Diego, California | Amy

Amy finally landed and we met up and decided to go to Westfield Shopping Mall since that’s where our lunch reservations were. We saw such gorgeous succulents on the walls. We walked into a few skincare stores before making our way to those chairs. We sat there fixing our makeup and catching up. I actually want one. They are super comfy!

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Din Tai Fung | San Diego, California

Our lunch at Din Tai Fung was so worth it. We got spare ribs, green beans, spicy pork and veggie wontons, pork Xiao long baos, and pork and crab Xiao long baos.

By far the pork and crab xiao long baos were our favourite. The best was when I dipped them into the spicy wonton sauce!

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Din Tai Fung | San Diego, California | Amy

Amy confirmed tonight that this was the best meal so far! Which I’m so happy to hear since I’m always afraid people won’t like the choices I make!

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Origins | San Diego, California | Amy Mellie Dee Facials

Since check-in wasn’t until two, we had time to kill. We went into Origins and decided to get a free facial. Since we sat across from one another we noticed the other was in our own bodies and thus these pictures came to fruition. It still gets us everytime we see it. I guess this is what I would look like if I had Sissy’s body. We ended each buying a few things. I got mine shipped home and I’m so excited to use them!

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Dog Park | San Diego, California

We took a dog park path to cut through to CVS. This picture makes it seem like she’s packed her bags and ran away with her problems which isn’t truly false since we are in another state.

After CVS we took an Uber to our Airbnb where we unloaded and took naps before heading back out again.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Liberty Public Market | San Diego, California | Popup Dinner

We got our Uber driver to take us to Liberty Public Market. Where we were dropped off, we saw gorgeous half spheres everywhere! It was a pop-up and if I remember correctly, it’s $80 to rent a bubble and $109 per person for dinner. Oh and not to mention, four people minimum. Since we aren’t rich and definitely don’t have anyone but each other we decided to continue with our plans.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Liberty Public Market | San Diego, California | Amy

Liberty Public Market has restaurants and shopping. I bought some cute earrings and even some popcorn. Minocqua sells these delicious potato puffs, jalapeno flavour is the best while Any opted for a sweeter type. You can order online as well and I’m hoping they deliver to Houston.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Liberty Public Market | San Diego, California | Parana Empanadas Argentinas

We decided on a snack at Parana Empanadas Argentinas. I got the Spicy Beef flavour, “SB” as engraved on the empanada, which I thought was pretty cool. Amy got the Malbec empanada. Their chumichurri and Chipotle chumichurri was perfect. Their green olive sauce was pretty great too.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Liberty Public Market | San Diego, California | The Hot Spot | Mosaics | Amy Mellie Dee

Afterwards we walked around and bumped into an art center in the art district! We could have made pottery, candles, etc. But decided on mosaics. I think they came out pretty well! Plus the conversations we had helped me connect more with her.

2020 San Diego Trip | Day 1 | Liberty Public Market | San Diego, California | Soda & Swine

Liberty Public Market was closing so we searched around for food and decided on Soda & Swine. They’re known for their cocktails here but we decided on a Granny Apple salad, broccolini, brussel sprouts, smashed potatoes, and scotch eggs. Everything was great and the atmosphere was nice. They were a little heavy with the salt but overall, it was still a great experience.

Tomorrow is a new day. This two hour time zone is making me tired. Night world!

The General Public | Houston, Texas

February 17, 2020 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Fireside | Houston, Texas | Nic

One more day of work until a much needed vacation! I celebrated after work by buying something from Sur La Table and getting drinks with Nic at Fireside. This bar has changed names so much it’s crazy! But they had some nice music playing that brought back memories.

The General Public | Houston, Texas | Nic

I got tipsy off one old fashioned and made it a deal that I needed to get something in my stomach. We walked to The General Public and ordered some things to share. King Pao Lettuce Wraps, Honey Fried Chicken Wings, and Brussels Sprouts.

This place has easily been my favourite go to for drinks and food. Everything is delicious here. I couldn’t believe how much I loved the fried chicken. I am already making plans in my head to go back … Possibly alone because it’s so worth it.

We bid our farewells and I headed home. I still have yet to pack but I’m too sleepy to do so.

LTK Crawfish | Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar | Houston, Texas

February 15, 2020 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Starbucks & Kolache Factory | Katy, Texas

The day started off with Starbucks and Kolaches. The Kolache Factory had a grand opening and I got the spin a wheel. My bad luck followed me as I passed the gift card arrow by two pins. I ended up getting a lanyard from Monster instead. Lame.

Mellie Dee & Jacob

Jacob has been better lately. Maybe he’s getting older but he seems to not cry as much when I hold him. He doesn’t like pictures though so this was the best I got. Such big eyes!

JJ & the Katy Rodeo Parade

We headed to the Katy Rodeo Parade. JJ loves all the candy that gets thrown his way. Mallory and I watched the parade while Jacob slept and John … Well John was having his own fun. He made friends with a cop and talked to him the entire time. I joked if they were going to be on a second date. I love when I get invited to little things like these because memories like that will be with me forever.

Afterward we went and spun some Pokestops so that I can get gifts to send them since I never play. When we got back I headed home and took a nice short nap.

LTK Crawfish | Houston, Texas

I headed over to Priscilla’s and we went with Padit and Ryan to pick up some Crawfish from LTK Crawfish and eat back at the house. The spice level was there but the flavour is lacking. We ordered the Traditional Garlic Butter but it was missing some depth. I don’t hate it though and for the price of was well worth it. I ordered snow crabs as well and we all got corn, potatoes and sausage. Sadly the corn was not fully cooked. The fried rice was surprisingly good as well, especially adding in the garlic butter sauce.

Copper Kettle Chocolate Factory | Tomball, Texas

On our way back to the house we stopped by Copper Kettle Chocolate Factory. The whole entire upper box was $10 for all of those chocolate covered strawberries!

I know how to play the system now. Come day after Valentine’s day and buy half a pound of chocolate covered strawberries and get way over a pounds worth since they have to get rid of it! Plus they were about to close so it’s perfect!

Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar | Houston, Texas

I met Pradz at Lazy Dog Restaurant and Bar. This was THE best piece of bacon I’ve ever had. The beer flight is actually one of the best flights ever put together as well. I would definitely come back here to try other things as we only shared Brussels sprouts since we were still stuffed from our late lunches.

Driving all over today has been exhausting but it’s been great memories all around. Few more days until I get to spend time with an amazing person and eat delicious foods.
