2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | A Week in San Antonio

May 23, 2021 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Daily Coffee by Patricia

My work days begin with a cup of coffee made by Patricia every morning. It’s not a bad way to start the day and makes me wonder if I ever end up with someone, would they do the same. Something to keep in mind, I’m not a big fan of coffee unless it’s a latte and she came through for me. All the mugs were different too. Can you guess which one is my favourite?

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Sari-Sari Filipino Restaurant | HEB Meals

Monday was a pretty chill day. I ordered lunch from Sari-Sari Filipino Restaurant. It’s been on my list of places to try since day one. It’s opened by one of my old collegemates from when we were in FTK. Their lumpia and lechon were amazing and I would order again in a heartbeat even though I feel they are a little overpriced. The rice and Kare-Kare was a little on the miss side. The peanut soupiness was not flavourful enough and was very bland. The peanut butter didn’t come out enough. The rice was also mushy and with the stew it made it a big ole no-no. But I had it for lunch a few other days because no waste over here.

For dinner, we had bought some HEB meals to make and it came out great. We watched Thunder Force before heading off to bed.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | 54th Street Restaurant & Drafthouse with Doug and Patricia

On Tuesday, Moises and Emily got me a poke bowl from Hula Poke for dinner but I saved it for breakfast for a couple of days since Patricia and I had plans to see Doug. We met at 54th Street Restaurant where we had not so great old fashions, tater kegs, dressed roasted Brussel sprouts, and rattlesnake pasta.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Rock and Rye with Patricia & Doug

We then went to Rock and Rye for real old fashions. Note for Patricia in the future — she likes the Pimms drink because she couldn’t figure out what she liked from here and made the guy keep guessing.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Toro | Amy, Thuy & Chloe

On Wednesday, we all took a bit of a half day from work. Patricia and I met up with Amy and Thuy. We finally got to meet Chloe and she is the CUTEST. Her back bends made us laugh SO much.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Toro Tapas with Patricia, Amy, Thuy & Chloe

We ordered the WHOLE menu at Toro — or it felt like we did. Huevos Rotos, Patatas Bravas, Champinoes Lugo, Tacos de Cochinita Pibil, Calamares Fritos, Toro Pallea, Valencia Gin, Red Sangria Pitcher, Torrijas a la mode.

This is my new favourite tapas place. Why does it have to be so far away?! I definitely want to come back here next time and try their other stuff.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Thuy's with Amy, Patricia, Mellie Dee | Ube Crinkle Cookies & Pop Tarts

We went to Thuy’s afterward so that she could put Chloe away. Patricia worked while Amy, Thuy and I sat and had girl talk and caught up a lot. It was nice. Thuy even made us Ube Crinkle Cookies and Ube Pop Tarts. All delicious.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | El Mirasol with Andy, Jakob, Amy, Patricia

Later that day Patricia stopped by James Avery and then we headed off to El Marisol where we met up with Andy, Jakob, and Amy.

There is too much food that I don’t know what everyone ordered … and Andy’s is not even in the picture. But EVERY SINGLE thing was good. I was lucky enough to try them all and it sent me in a whirlwind of wanting to come back next time.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | El Mirasol | Andy, Jakob, Amy, Patricia Texting

I made a joke that I drove 3 hours for them to be on their phone while they spent time with me.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | El Mirasol | Andy, Jakob, Amy, Patricia, Mellie Dee

But overall, lots of new memories were made.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Bovinos Churrascaria with Patricia

On Thursday, Patricia had made reservations for Bovino’s Brazilian Steakhouse. We did the seafood choice and it was somewhat worth it since I ate some of Patricia’s too. I would be fine with just the meat and salad bar choice since the salad bar had an amazing fish ceviche!

When the server asked if we were here for a special occasion, Patricia told them it was for my birthday and so we were surprised with a show and a free cake. Probably one of my favourite cakes now because it wasn’t sweet at all.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | La Cantera | Patricia & Mellie Dee

Since we overate — mostly me — we walked around the closed La Cantera and took lots of pictures to commemorate our time together.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | Emmy & Mellie Dee Video, Patricia Lasik, McAllisters, Las Palapas

On Friday, we ordered McAllister’s and I had a video chat with Emmy. She said she loves my hair and wants hers to be purple and pink too. haha Dad was not too happy with that conversation.

I then took Patricia to her Lasik surgery appointment. I took care of her and then Andy, Ana, and Amy came over. Amy came first and we were able to have one on one conversation and it was what I’ve been missing. Whenever you hang out with a group, it’s hard to have in depth conversations with each individual so I was happy that we had that time together.

We ordered dinner from Las Palapas and Andy and Ana were nice enough to pick it up for us. We then watched What a Girl Wants. Andy and Ana had never seen it and I loved watching their reactions. Patricia fell asleep on the couch while Amy and I planned our trip. We ended up choosing Charleston and Patricia will be joining us as well. Cannot wait! Planning has begun.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Ida Claire with Patricia

Saturday morning, Patricia had to go to her next day Lasik check up so we went there and the drug store to pick up some eye drops for her. She was doing so well she ended up driving and even was down to go to Ida Claire for brunch.

This place has been on my list since forever and I was ecstatic! Mimosas in orange juice and grapefruit juice, French Press coffee, Nashville Cauliflower, Gristmill Asiago Grits, Chicken & Waffles, and Ida’s Fried Chicken – Nashville style.

Seriously thankful for our server for letting me know that I could Nashville style the fried chicken because I was between that and the Nashville chicken made a different way. I am so coming back here next time I’m back. I had a lot leftover, packed it to go and ate it for breakfast this morning after making some sunny side eggs.

2021 | Week 62 of Quarantine | Hot Pot | Rocky, Rizzo, Mellie Dee

I spent some time taking naps and waking up then left back to Houston. I was greeted with hot pot for dinner. Lots of veggies as requested.

Rizzo loved having cuddle time and Rocky even came and slept on my bed for a long time.

It’s Sunday. Workout, Charleston trip planning, bachelorette planning, and lots of Rizzo cuddles. I’m so pooped. It was a great week filled with great friends and laughter. So many new memories made.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Birthdays & San Antonio

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Nails & Hair

Started off the week doing my own nails and curing my hair. I’ve realized my SUPER long hair looks great curled.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Pearl & Vine | Katy, Texas | Birthday Dinner | Mallory, Beth, Mellie Dee

Tuesday, I met up with Mallory & Beth and Pearl and Vine for my early birthday celebration. We pretty much ordered the entire menu. Everything tasted pretty great. It was a bit on the louder side so it was hard to hear but other than that all was well. We enjoyed some drinks and had a great time talking about nothing. There were no screaming kids around as well so I hope the mamas had a great relaxing night.

Side note. The pink martini was actually clear. Mallory ordered it because we though a blue martini would be blue. Instead it was clear and named blue martini because it uses an olive stuffed with blue cheese.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Massage Heights | Birthday

Thursday, for my birthday, I finally used the Massage Heights gift cards my siblings and significant others got me back in 2019. It had enough for a one and a half hour massage and one hour facial. I had a grand time and wished I had a nice robe like theirs. There was a small part of me that wanted to steal it!

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Tiffs Treats, Starbucks, Los Balitos, Ginger Thai, Ice Cream Cake, Pokemon Puzzle | Birthday

I went and got my free Starbucks drink and some tacos from Los Balitos before heading home. Patricia got me Tiff Treats delivery so I gobbled some up. We ordered from Ginger Thai for dinner and enjoyed some Ice cream sandwiches as cake. Then I finished my Pokemon puzzle.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Shine on Heights | Houston, Texas | Haircut & Partial Balayage

Friday, I had a hair cut and decided on partial balayage. I’m still unknown on how I feel about the colour. It’s more red than I hoped and also, feel like he did a full than a partial. I’ve washed it out once and noticed some is turning more red than the purple we had hoped for. Yikes. I don’t hate it but … it’s more than I had asked for.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Frankenstein | Health & Medical Museum, Science Museum } Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life | Birthday

I was a little nervous meeting up with Frankenstein since I hadn’t told him I was getting all that craziness but he was supportive and said he liked it. Not sure if it’s true, but being supportive is all that matters.

We met up at the Health and Medical museum because I really wanted to see the Body Worlds and The Cycle of Life exhibit. Sadly, it wasn’t it but we did have a lot of fun in there. We then walked around the gardens and into the Science Museum to see what I had wanted to see. It was very eye opening and I’m thankful for those that donated themselves for science. It was also nice to listen to Frankenstein answer my questions.

We also walked around the Gem exhibits and we pretty much made fun of stuff and ooooed and aaaahed over others.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | Frankenstein | Lucille's | Houston, Texas | Birthday

We then stood outside my car with our indecisive selves trying to find a place to eat. We ended up at Lucille’s where we got old fashions, Brussel Sprouts, Oxtails, and Fried Chicken. Everything was delicious and I made a mess cleaning the bones. Thankful that Frankenstein was willing to lose sleep to spend time with me before I was gone for a week.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Cookie the Maltipoo, Pedicture, Summer Moon Coffee

Saturday morning, I started my drive, Starbucks in hand, to San Antonio. When I got there, I was able to meet Emily and Cookie. Then a pedicure and Summer Moon for coffee. We went to HEB to grab groceries before heading back to the house.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Dinner & Patricia's

Amy was so sweet in giving me a birthday present. I was able to use my Happy Birthday wine glass from her and I felt FANCY.

I made guacamole with instructions from Jakob. The rest was made by Patricia. Jakob also got us cookies from Crumbl.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Andy, Amy, Mellie Dee, Jakob, Patricia, Travis

It was a great night catching up with everyone. We had at least 5 different conversations going at the same time. Many interruptions, questions, interrogations. It was a lot and not enough at the same time. We did photoshoots and Andy tried to get everyone with that ugly filter. We sang, we joked, we threw down shade.

2021 | Week 61 of Quarantine | San Antonio | Patricia & Mellie Dee | Brunch & Smashin Crab

This morning, Andy, Amy, and Ana came over for brunch. We ate and talked mostly about boys and dating life. They left and I relaxed and watched “Those Who Wish Me Dead” with Patricia. She was nice enough to go to Smashin Crab with me before we headed to HEB to buy groceries for tomorrow’s dinner.

It’s been a whirlwind of a Birthday week and I feel so thankful for everyone.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine

March 21, 2021 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | COVID Shot

First order of business. I’m fully vaccinated as of Monday. I took off Tuesday thinking that I would have symptoms but I am unsure if it’s proud to say that I had no symptoms whatsoever. No fevers, no aches, etc. I have already started talks with some friends who are also vaccinated to hopefully visit them and travel somewhere. Eek!

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | Funny Dog Puzzle

I finished another puzzle. This one makes me laugh because of how silly if is. On the newspaper, one section reads “Bark Obama Approves Universal Pet Care”.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | Taste Buds Cereal Bar | Katy, Texas | Mallory, JJ, Jacob

Friday was my day off but I tried some loose ends at work then met up with Mallory, JJ and Jacob at Taste Buds Cereal Bar. Everyone that knows me knows I’m not a fan of cereal but am always down to try new places. The boys loved their bowl of sugar while I opted to share a funnel cake with strawberries, fruity pebbles cereal and dunkaroo cereal. I would def come back for the funnel cake. I loved watching Jacob eat with two spoons.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | Kura Sushi | Katy, Texas

Afterward I had a date with myself. I took myself to Kura Sushi. It’s been forever and this place will always hold a special place in my heart. I don’t eat as much as I use to so no prizes. I did accidentally ordered a box of rice with beef. Sigh. I was too excited and pressed the wrong button.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | The Rustic | Houston, Texas | Brooke

Later that night, I met up with Brooke at The Rustic. This has always been a place I wanted to try and was so happy Brooke mentioned it! Super big space, very cozy and live music. Their food was amazing. I got the spicy chicken sandwich. DROOL. I’ve never had a super long conversation with Brooke before and was surprised we were there for almost four hours.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | The Cafe at Brookwood | Brookshire, Texas | Ryan

I was able to snag a reservation for The Cafe at Brookwood. This has been on my list since Alyssa got married YEARS ago. I’ve tried to get someone to go with me and was so excited Ryan agreed.

This place hires special needs adults to help them out and they even make a lot of the things they sell in the store. So cool!

I loved my shrimp and grits and Ryan loved his Mango Chicken (?). We finished everything!!

And then headed into their store where they sold A LOT of stuff. We grabbed a few things each before heading into their nursery. I’m sure a lot of the plants died from the freeze but this place will be on my come back list with Mum. She’ll love it.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | Food Fest

Speaking of asking foods, I had a lot of good ones this week. Including crawfish an Rudy’s! I’ve also perfected brussel sprouts.

2021 | Week 53 of Quarantine | Rizzo

My days were filled with Rizzo moments. My favourite is when I’m outside with my Kindle and he just wants to snuggle up even in the colder temperatures.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Rizzo Sleepy

Rizzo sleeping peacefully while I’m busy at work. Sammi sent me a picture of Pluto and Emmy asleep, asking me if I was safe from the hurricane so I sent this picture back to her.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Chinese Food

Mum and June were off Wednesday so they went to Chinatown and bought some goodies back. I ate my share for days after but I didn’t mind it at all.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Cauliflower Gnocchi & Meatballs and Kimchi Soup

I did cook my own foods as well. Cauliflower Gnocchi and Meatballs as well as Kimchi Soup. This type of soup is always a default for me when I’m cleaning out the fridge, trying to use vegetables that are going bad.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Rizzo & Mellie Dee Forest Park Walk

Since I’ve been working so hard/much, my boss said I can pick whatever day I want to take off as a free vacation. I could have chose a day I worked more hours but chose Friday since June was off. I finally got her to agree to go to “the forest” walk with me. Rizzo did well off leash.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Forest Park Walk Views

And the views. THE VIEWS. So much path left uncovered. Loved seeing runners/bikers while we did our almost 3.5-mile walk. I wanted to continue but Rocky was about to be done.

For anyone that knows Rocky, he’s a big chunk. He did the walk with us and afterward, wouldn’t move for a while. Trooper. He’s doing so well with these daily walks.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | La Baguette Bakery & Bistro | Katy, Texas | June
Tequenos [5 fried breaded cheese stick served with a side of our house sauce] • Cachapas [one sweet corn pancake sliced in half topped with white cheese with a side of shredded beef] • Causa de Pollo [masked potato topped with avocado, hard boiled egg, and chicken salad] • Veggie Arepa • Shredded Beef Arepa • Sauces • Alfajores

We went back home, showered and relaxed a bit then headed out for our annual birthday lunch where I chose a place and I treat her to it.

I’ve been wanting to try La Baguette Bakery & Bistro and was so happy she was down to go with me.

La Baguette Bakery & Bistro

Everything was so good. Our favourite was the cachapas. The lady was nice enough to let us know that we can buy a bigger version without the meat. Definitely will be doing that next time.

I’ve converted June to loving Tequenos more than American Mozzarella sticks. Seriously, if you haven’t tried Tequenos yet and you LOVE cheese, this is the better version, especially when you dip it in their green sauce.

The arepas are great but wish my bottom wasn’t so soggy. I slathered Causa on the arepas which made them taste even better. I’ve had other Causas before and this one fit the bill. I want to come back for this and the Alfajores that melts in your mouth.

I’ve been to other Venezuelan places before but this is one of the best in Katy. I love that I can bring my laptop here and order a coffee too. Debating and really wanting to.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Texas Snow | Katy, Texas | June

We walked around Daiso a bit to get our food moving through our bodies then stopped by Texas Sno for dessert.

I was so happy she loved it — especially since it was over 100 degrees out!

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Houston Restaurant Week | Urban American Kitchen | Mum
Bellini | $7.50 • Urban Brussel Sprouts | $5 • Herb Crusted Salmon [served with saffron cream sauce, asparagus, and cheesy risotto] | $16.95 • Houston Restaurant Week Brunch | 1st Course: Blueberry Pancakes [fluffy buttermilk pancakes served with blueberries and syrup] | 2nd Course: Chicken Wings & Waffles [crispy chicken wings over Belgian waffle served with habanero syrup] | $20

On Saturday, after stopping by Hobby Lobby, I took Mum to our annual Houston Restaurant Week meal at Urban American Kitchen. Sadly I thought they’d have the lunch menu but ended up with the brunch menu.

Urban American Kitchen
14008 Memorial Drive
Houston, Texas 77079
urbanamericankitchen.com

We made do. I ordered off the brunch menu and she ordered off the regular menu. It wasn’t what we expected but it ended up being better than we thought.

Their brunch is nothing special. Their blueberry pancakes were normal, the waffle was soggy, and the wings, though crispy lacked flavour. Overall disappointed with their Houston Restaurant Week brunch.

But their salmon and Brussels were a hit. We loved it SO much. I don’t mind coming back to try their main menu more to see if there are other hidden yums.

This is super close to work, so if we ever do go back to the office, this could be a place to go with coworkers — but who are we kidding, I rarely go out at work time.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Smoothie King

After an amazing meal, we went and got groceries from H-Mart and a car wash, we decided to pick up Smoothie King and Pho for dinner. I never get to go to Smoothie King so I asked for 40 oz of Daily Warrior for myself. I wish I was in walking distance to Smoothie King – or any juicer place. What we make at home never compares.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | June's Birthday Cheese Souffle Cake

Today, we went to 99 Ranch to pick up some essentials. Then it was laziness until dinner time when June came home. We had a tiny Cheese Souffle cake for her to blow out one last candle for a wish.

2020 | Week 24 of Quarantine | Daily Walk Views

These are different sunsets during the week on our daily walks. Y’all sick of these yet? Because I’m not. I love how every day is unpredictable. You never know what colours you’ll get. Or what you’ll see. The cat wasn’t afraid of us but also didn’t like when Rizzo got closer.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Mellie Dee Eye Masks During Meetings

Life currently is face and eye masks during meetings since no one can see me. Sadly we’re moving from Skype to Teams and apparently people tend to turn their cameras on. That means I actually have to look presentable if that happens.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Los Cucos with Eric

On Friday, after work, I met up with Eric at Los Cucos. Ever since June and I went and sneakily ate dim sum at the restaurant, I’ve been a little more okay with it BUT as long as the ones near me are safe.

We had margaritas and fajitas. I ate all the onions and a piece of meat since he doesn’t like onions so it was a win. Plus I already had dinner plans so ordering a whole meal would have been ridiculous.

We said our goodbyes and I stopped by Mallory’s and caught up with Linda and Gary for a bit, met Oliver, Mallory’s nephew, for the first time, and spun JJ around a few times.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | The Oaks Kitchen & Bar | Katy, Texas | Mallory and Mackenzie

Mallory, Mackenzie, and I went to The Oaks Kitchen & Bar for Beth’s Baby Shower planning. There was more eating than planning which I didn’t mind since the food was delicious. I’m sure Mackenzie was not a fan of my picture taking but after Mallory made a statement about it I tried to do me without the worry. The shrimp and grits were a little funky with the sauce but their pork belly was on point, as well as their ceviche and crab wraps.

The only thing I didn’t like about this place is that they don’t follow the rules on the whole 6 ft apart and wearing masks. The servers have the masks on but it was not correctly on their face so it made me a bit nervous but I tried to shake it off. Safe to say I’ll be more careful going to places now.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Spicy Noodle Soup and Dim Sum Yums from 99 Ranch

I’m a pro at making a spicy soup! Not Kimchi soup but equally delicious and much spicier! It’s become my simple meal and sometimes I opt out of the noodles all together.

When we went and got groceries on Saturday, we bought congee, Chinese breadsticks, pig ears, seasme balls, har gow and meat as a nice snack/meal after we got home. It was nice getting some real Asian food in even though it wasn’t a lot. I never thought I’d miss Chinatown foods as much as I do.

I also did a video chat with Beth to talk about the book we both read, Confess by Colleen Hoover. It’s a pretty good book but lacks a lot of details. We’re on our second book in our mini book club. I’m almost done but stopped since Beth won’t finish anytime soon. It’s nice having someone to talk books with since I’ve never done it before. Plus, she chooses pretty good books.

2020 | Week 22 of Quarantine | Rizzo Morning and Night Walks

With all the eats come all the walks. Daily walks are still going strong and I am trying to beat my step goal that’s automatically calculated for me. That’s going well too but I wonder if it’ll just keep going up to where I can’t handle it or have enough time to do it every day.

June loves sunrise walks and I’m a lover for the sunset ones. I did force her to go with me Friday at 5:30 am since I knew I wasn’t able to get any walks in that night. I want to do more early-early walks but my family is afraid I’d get kidnap or whatever since it’s so dark out. Maybe I can sneak out and get it done. Hmm …

Houston Restaurant Week is half over! I still need to find my place to take Mum. We talked about ordering to go and eating it in the car so we can still have our one-on-one tradition. I’m also trying to get Mallory to pick something since we’ve always done one every year. We’ll see.
