A Whole New …. Year

January 3, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

A whole new [year]
A hundred thousand things to see
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back
To where I used to be
A Whole New World :: Aladdin

How was everyone’s new year celebrations? I hope everyone had a great one surrounded by lovelies!

I’ve always made sure to go home in time to celebrate the new year with my parents and June. Meaning, I’ve never actually celebrated a new year with anyone but them because I feel bad for leaving them behind. But this time around, I actually said yes to an invitation to a near year’s eve party and I’m glad I did! But before I get to the party, let’s talk about dinner with Melissa Z.

I went to her apartment where we got semi ready then headed to:

True Food Kitchen | Houston, Texas | Sangria and Tuna Wrap

True Food Kitchen
1700 Post Oak Blvd
Houston, Texas 77056
(281) 605-2505
http://truefoodkitchen.com

Farmers Market Sangria [spiced brandy, citrus, red wine, seasonal fruit smash] | $10

Nothing too special with the drank. Just like any other sangria I’ve ever had. Definitely not better than the one I usually get from The Next Door Lounge but it did the trick in getting my pre-game started.

Seared Spicy Wild Caught Tuna Wrap [radish, avocado, mint, snow pea, cashew, sesame, wasabi aioli] | $15

My taste buds were on fire. FIRE. Not in the spicy kind of way but the holy-cow-on-a-stick kind of feeling. My taste buds were tingling. It’s like a sushi … in a wrap. So freaking good. I got a side of sweet potato hash but after eating the insides of the wrap, I was full enough. Seriously. SO. FREAKING. GOOD.

Mellie Dee and Melissa Z. NYE Party

We headed back to Melissa Z.’s to change into our partying attire and fixed our makeup then got an UBER to Alyssa’s.

Mellie Dee and Alyssa NYE Party

Alyssa, my high school bestie, was throwing one at her abode. Her abode is freaking modern and awesomely cool. It’s like something you see in movies! IN MOVIES! So freaking swanky.

Mellie Dee Alyssa Melissa Z. NYE Party

Melissa Z. and I got there early so that we could do a quick catch up with Alyssa and meet Cody before everyone came. I miss that little lady and wish we had more time together. Hopefully we get to see each other more in the upcoming future. It’s crazy how she works in my building at work yet we only pass by one another once in a few months. As for Cody, he works on my floor! How crazy is that?!

NYE Party at Alyssa's

When people started arriving, I played a game as to whether “that person” works with me. And guess what … majority do! These are just some of the party peeps we mainly talked to. A majority of them work on my floor! Yet we’ve never talked to one another. Just passed by one another. Ah … that is the world of corporate. They’re a cool bunch of poopies and we made plans to do lunch or something in the future. We’ll see if that actually happens. Still awesome that I got to meet them.

I would say my first new year eve party was successful. I had a lot of fun and met a lot of new people which was on my new year’s resolutions. Already on the right path. Holla!

I slept in the day after and just relaxed with Rizzo and had a family dinner that night. I spent most of the day looking at houses/townhomes to buy. Maybe I’ll take the plunge soon especially after seeing Alyssa’s place. But with how oil and gas is … maybe I should wait?

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema | San Antonio, Texas

This weekend has been the most amazing one this whole semester.

I got to spend it with some amazing people.

I’ve already covered Friday night but I found a picture in my phone so you’ll just have to suck it up and hear it again!

Friday:

2011-11-18 20.20.27

After working hard on a partnership packet, a group of us went and ate at Cheddar’s. Gary, Ryan, Patricia, Katrina, Andy, Preston, and I all squeezed into a booth. Drinking was in order. Ryan and Patricia ordered margaritas while I chose the oh so wonderful Fat Tire. The others were underage.

Our waiter was DUMB. He didn’t know what a Fat Tire was and when we said separate checks, he said “Huh? What do you mean?” Really now?

Saturday:

Jenny, Tammy, and I went to the mall. Tammy needed to buy a birthday present for my brother so we shopped around. Then afterward we shopped around for ourselves. Winking smile

I got cute little fingerless mittens that can change to where my fingers are covered at Forever21 for $6.

I even got a nice looking jacket at Macy’s for $25! What a deal!! It’s a nice jacket that I can wear with my nice clothes. Much needed since I own a lot of hoodies.

I had gotten a text from my high school friend, Nicole, that she and her boyfriend were going to be in town. So we planned to get dinner with Stephanie (another high school friend who has been interning here in San Antonio).

We went to Taqueria Data Point. We talked and chilled. It was great. That was the first time I’ve met her boyfriend, and he was amazing!! He could definitely hold a conversation.

The only thing missing was Michelle. She’s coming home from New York this upcoming Sunday!! Finally, we’ll be in the same state again!

Jenny and Tammy wanted to watch Breaking Dawn so we had agreed to meet back at the apartments at 9pm. Then we headed to:

2011-11-19 21.40.00

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
1255 SW Loop 410
San Antonio, TX
(210) 677-8500
www.drafthouse.com

2011-11-19 21.44.052011-11-19 22.22.30

Our tickets. We are nerds. And we sat all the way at the top … that’s the view I saw. That’s not really the movie on the screen. Before they movie, they played all the spoofs. It’s hilarious!

2011-11-19 22.17.38

There was a lot of things on the menu. Definitely not your usual candies, sodas, popcorn, and nachos at the regular movie theaters.

After you figure out what you want, you write it down and stick it on the metal rail in front of you so it looks like a “flag”.

2011-11-19 22.37.21

Toasted Orzo [olive oil toasted Orzo pasta tossed in red vinegar, parsley, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, and green onions] | $2.99

This was actually A LOT of food. The dude said it came In a small bowl. I beg to differ. I ate some and gave the rest to Jenny.

This was dang delicious and for such a low price. (It was a side.) The only thing I’m confused with is, it says it’s pasta … but I got rice. Unless Orzo means rice. Oh and the dish is cold. Like a salad!

I would order this again when I go because it’s cheap and delicious.

2011-11-19 22.37.48

Guinness Milkshake [Guinness and vanilla ice cream] | $5.00

OMG … I love it. I wished they would of told me that it had whipped cream because I would of told them NO THANKS! It was very delicious though. I would love to go and just order this. So delectable. So smooth.

2011-11-19 22.49.15

“Royale With Cheese” Burger [100% hormone and antibiotic free Angus patty with lettuce, tomato, onions, Cheddar cheese, bacon and chipotle mayo on a toasted sweet bun] | $9.99

The burger was very juicy. Cooked perfectly. The fries had a special type of seasoning so my ketchup as very unnecessary. The fries were a bit on the hard side. Not crunchy … hard. Yep.

I don’t think I would order the burger again though. It was good but not GREAT.

The theater itself … there are little lights underneath the long table where you sit. Luckily the ones under Jenny and I were out so it wasn’t super bright. The people came at the WORST times possible. But it was still a great experience.

The movie itself … was great! I’m not a die-hard Twilight fan but I love when people will do anything to protect those they love. Go watch it. It’s not terrible!

Sunday:

It was supposed to be study day but Jenny, Tammy, and I were lazy and were on Pinterest laughing away. When they went to H-E-B, I started my laundry, showered, and printed out all my slides. Productive?

2011-11-20 15.59.08

A bee flew into our humble abode. Sad smile They were scared. I wasn’t scared … as long as it wasn’t close to me. He was pretty dumb. He kept flying into the window and couldn’t get out. Took him about a good hour. I tried to help but you could hear he was getting angry.

After dinner, we watched Water For Elephants. Such a good movie. Robert Pattinson isn’t as terrible as everyone thinks. I find him attractive. Winking smile

This weekend was filled with fun and I cannot wait for this upcoming Thanksgiving break. I get to see my whole family as well as Tammy and Jenny’s family. It’s going to be amazing!!

Black Walnut Café |Katy, Texas and Bravos Mexican Restaurant | Sugar Land, Texas

Ed and I met at Black Walnut Café in Cinco Ranch.

Black Walnut Café

Black Walnut Cafe | Katy, Texas | Garlic Cheese Bread

Ed and I shared the Garlic Cheese Bread for starters. These are the devil. They were so good that we couldn’t stop and was sad when it was over.

Black Walnut Cafe | Katy, Texas | Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup

I got the Grilled Cheese with Tomato Soup as my main entree. The soup wasn’t something to talk about and if you love cheese, this grilled cheese is perfect for you.

I was so full but Ed wanted to hang out some more before he had to go to work so we went to Starbucks down the street. He paid for my Green Tea Frap since I paid for the appetizer.

Starbucks Green Tea Frappucino

Afterward, I went home and played my guitar. Ed re-strung all the strings for me since I’m always afraid it will pop in my face (because that has happened before).

Mellie Dee & Guitar

Reunited and it feels so good!

I headed into Sugar Land to meet up with Amanda. It was supposed to be us and two of her other friends but they couldn’t make it. Oh well, more time for us to catch up!

I went to pick her up and we headed to:

Bravos Mexican Restaurant | Sugar Land, Texas

Bravos Mexican Restaurant
4514 Texas 6
Sugar Land, TX
(281) 494-3340

Amanda has never been to happy hour before so we popped her happy hour cherry. I believe it was also the first time she’s drank since her birthday celebration.

Bravos Mexican Restaurant | Sugar Land, Texas | Chips and Dip

Chips & Dip | Free. Much needed with our drinking.

Bravos Mexican Restaurant | Sugar Land, Texas | Strawberry Margaritas

Strawberry Margarita. There is too much alcohol in that shizz. After this, I know I do not like margaritas. Beer for me, please.

Bravos Mexican Restaurant | Sugar Land, Texas | Amanda & Magarita

Amanda and her margarita

After much talking and sucking those babies down, I drove her home and headed home.

After reading Rachael’s post about Recommitting, I hopped on the treadmill. I obviously did not do a 6-mile tempo run like she did (I haven’t even reached that point yet!) but I did do a 25-minute run and a 25-minute butt and thigh exercise.

I feel better already but it’s going to be hard to go back to how I did three weeks ago. I should have not quitted for so long! Ah, you’re stupid, Melissa. But I did better than I thought. I even up the tempo a little more than I usually did.

Thanks, Rachael, for that post. You saved me.

Mellie Dee | Blueberry Smoothie

Now I’m sucking down a blueberry smoothie with too much milk. I ran out of yogurt so it’s mostly milk and ice. Still delicious.

Tomorrow is going to be another Food-venture!! Mum and I will be attending lunch at one of the Houston Restaurant Week locations. Then I can cross it off my Bucket List!

Night!

Black Walnut Cafe | Sugar Land, Texas

July 10, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I went over to Michelle’s house Friday night. I was a little afraid of driving through the countryside.

Mellie Dee 3

Eyes on the road. Safety first!

When I got to her place, Stephanie was already there. We went to the backyard.

Michelle's Backyard

Isn’t it beautiful?! They have a river out back and past the grass is a slope with more land and the gazebo you see on the left. Pretty neat huh?

They have a really gorgeous house. Plus, their family is really sweet.

Yesterday, June, Timothy, and I went out to Sugar Land to celebrate our cousin, Kenson’s, birthday.

We went and watched Transformers: Dark of the Moon. I wasn’t really a big fan of wanting to watch this movie because they took Megan Fox out and added that model girl, who I don’t really care to know the name of but I still wanted to see it nonetheless.

Though I don’t like the girl, I like her hair. Especially when they were standing in rubble and she was talking into the camera.

I knew I would like this movie but I was hoping my cousin wouldn’t pick it because it was two hours long. I even tried to make him not pick it by saying “I heard it sucks! Let’s watch something else.” In the end, I still wished we didn’t see it in the theater.

Shia LeBeouf is as sexy as ever. As is Josh Duhamel.

Oh, and I’m not ashamed to say I shed some tears in this movie.

Anyway, for dinner, we went to:

Black Walnut Cafe | Sugar Land, Texas

Black Walnut Cafe

Black Walnut Cafe | Sugar Land, Texas | Toasted Raviolis "Espanol"

Toasted Raviolis “Español” [ravioli, mild jalapeño cheese, tomato & Pavia alfredo sauces, garlic bread] | $8.50 to share with the group.

I was told this was the best dish on the menu and everyone ordered it. Sadly, I was not a fan of the ravioli. It was crispy but on the inside, it was very dry. The garlic bread, on the other hand, was to die for. Crispy and moist enough.

Black Walnut Cafe | Sugar Land, Texas | Meatball Sandwich

For my main meal, Meatball Sandwich [house-made meatballs, mozzarella, tomato & Pavia alfredo sauces, onion baguette] | $8.50.

The meatballs were a little dry but I really liked the onion baguette. It was just the right crunch but also soft. The fries were mushy, just how I like it.

I would like to go here again and try other dishes. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t 100% terrific. Maybe I just need to order something else that people love.

I can’t believe the weekend is already over! Sad, sad! Hope you guys had a good weekend!!

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas

Sissy, Brudda, and Tammy were home and so on May 17th the whole family went to check out Red Oak Grill.

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas | Stuffed Jalapenos

Stuffed Jalapenos | $3.99

Not spicy enough and the cheese was pretty sharp and we also did away with the ranch dressing.

Red Oak Grill | Katy, Texas | Gyro

Gyro [savory beef and lamb slices with creamy Tzatziki sauce, served with Tabouleh and Hummus] | $11.89

The beef and lamb were moist but I think I went on a bad day because it was bland. But then again, I could be comparing it to Pasha’s. The hummus was nothing to rave about. But the thing that ruined the whole plate for me was the Tabbouleh due to the mint flavour. I whacked it off my plate onto my dad’s. He seemed to love it but he eats anything.

The food wasn’t appealing enough for me to come back in the future.
