Fernando’s | Sugar Land, Texas

July 19, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Mellie Dee and Luna

Luna sleeping on me.

Although I wasn’t feeling well, this past Saturday was pretty blissful. Scruffy and I haven’t had one-on-one time in a while where we didn’t have to worry much about anything. I went over to his house where I became Luna’s pillow. He was getting ready so that we could head to Thai Cottage for lunch and back home to spend time with the pups.

Luna's Cone of Shame & Daisy

Luna’s Cone of Shame & Lazy Daisy

When we got back, we realized Luna’s stitches came apart so Scruffy ran to the store to buy a cone and some Neosporin. The cone of shame … and those ears. Once her cone was on and Neosporin was applied, it was almost 5 pm. All four of us cuddled on the couch as we surfed the channels before our 8 pm dinner reservations. Our first fancy-ish date night with the use of a Groupon at:

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas

Fernando’s
14135 Southwest Freeway

Sugar Land, Texas 77478

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Ambience

The place has a romantic ambiance though people weren’t really dressed up not that there were many customers as you can see in the picture for a Saturday night at 8 pm.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Plantain Chips and Avocado Cilantro Cream

The waiter brought out Plantain Chips with Avocado Cilantro Cream | Free.

Scruffy and I are not a big fan of sweets so these were perfect, and not greasy. We both cleaned the avocado cilantro cream clean … too good.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Shrimp-itos

For our appetizer, we picked Shrimp-itos [golden baked shrimp; finished in a lemon, butter, and garlic sauce] | $12.

We both thought the sauce was pretty fantastic though the batter could have been a little better.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Cesar Salad

We both chose the Cesar Salad [traditional salad of Romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese] | $7.

Just a salad. Not much to talk about.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Garlic Bread

They serve Garlic Bread | Free with our entrees.

He was looking forward to the bread but it was disappointing, and a little burnt on the sides.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Steak Hickl

Scruffy chose the Steak Hickl [char-grilled marinated 9 oz New York strip, served with mashed potatoes, topped with mushroom port wine sauce] | $30.

I think the steak was perfect, as it should be since it’s a steakhouse. They had pico de gallo on the side and when you put a little bit of steak, mushrooms, and mashed potatoes in one bite, it gave the dish a little bit of refreshingness … is that even a word?

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Paella

I chose the Paella [yellow saffron rice, mixed with clams, mussels, scallops, shrimp, fish, crawfish, squids, chicken, and chorizo Espanol] | $26.

They did state in the menu to allow 27 minutes to make. We didn’t mind the wait at all because when it came, we both gobbled it up, except the chorizo. It was very hard and salty. Scruffy liked this dish the best and I would have to agree.

Fernando's | Sugar Land, Texas | Groupon Rules

When he made reservations, they stated for us to read all the rules but there weren’t any. When we arrived, they gave us a sheet of paper with the rules which wasn’t entirely written out when we bought the Groupon. False advertising, in my opinion. We bought the Groupon with a $30 off coupon, paying $14 out of pocket, so when our bill came, our total was only $7.43 + tip so we didn’t mind too much.

To say we licked our plate clean was an understatement. It was definitely a well worth meal for the price we paid, $21.43 + tip. Our wallets and tummies were very happy that night.  They do receive horrible reviews, but rest assured, the food, itself, is amazing. It’s the slow service that gets them lower ratings, in my opinion. But if you’re not in a rush, it’s a great experience.

Siviero Maria Lemon Gelato and Talenti Peanut Butter Pretzel

After dinner, we took a quick walk around Whole Foods were we saw a couple making out at the food bar. Gross. Then headed to H-E-B to pick up some things before heading back home. I picked up two different versions of gelato. A small Siviero Maria lemon gelato and a big Talenti peanut butter pretzel, both equally delicious.

Luna Asleep with Cone of Shame

Luna looking like a camel.

We changed and while Scruffy took the pups out, I sat and surfed through some channels trying to figure out what movie we could watch. We decided on The Purge where I was afraid half most of the time. All I will say is that there were some spillage of beverages which he wasn’t too happy about. Whoops.

Luna sleeping on me

The next day, we woke up and watched random shows before watching The Purge: Anarchy. It wasn’t as great as the first one but equally as scary … for me. Afterward, he went and grabbed a pizza and I took a nap while he watched Ted 2 before I headed home.

Scruffy made a horrible medicine tasting shot.

It was an eventful date weekend. I’m certain he was annoyed with me by the end of it and was happy to see me leave especially since I’m not so great to be around when I’m not feeling well. haha

Frosty Paws

July 12, 2016 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

Last week was hella crazy and stressful. Long story short, I ended up with over nine hours of overtime in less than two days for work. Luckily, I finished everything early last Friday and got to leave early.

I went over to The Joint where the chiropractor was shocked by how badly I was aligned. ALL because of work. I felt so much better after.

Cici's PIzza

I went over to Scruffy’s hoping for a nap but ended up going to Wal-Mart, Cici’s Pizza, and Dairy Queen. Cici’s quality is going way down, not that it was ever up to begin with. But their food is all starting to taste the same and the only way you can tell a difference is if they used tomato sauce or Alfredo sauce for the pizza. Thankfully, Dairy Queen made up for it. We both got ice cream cones and I had mine dipped in chocolate. We both only ate the bulb of our ice cream before throwing it out.

MKT Bar | Burger & Sliders

That night was also Kenson’s birthday celebration at Crazy Cat Escape Room, the dining room edition then MKT Bar for dinner.

The dining room version was a better-executed room than the one we did during July fourth weekend. All the clues went with one another and made more sense. If we had ten minutes more (or the missing two), we would have escaped with the will in time!

I’m not a big fan of MKT Bar. Overpriced with bad service pretty much every time I come here. I really wish I could love this place.

Frosty Paws | Rizzo & Rocky

Rizzo & Rocky

I got the pups some Frosty Paws, peanut butter flavor. Look at their tounges. They shared one and enjoyed it the whole entire time. I’m thinking of making my own since they are expensive.

Then this happened. Too cute. Too funny.

July Fourth Weekend

July 5, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

This weekend was pretty chill. Just how I like it! Since, you know, independence and shiet. I do what I want.

Friday, July 1st

Kung Fu Tea | Katy, Texas | Decor

I spent most of my morning/afternoon at Kung Fu Tea. It didn’t realize how long I was sitting there until the owner asked me if I wanted water. Whoops.

Later that night, Michelle and I finally got to see one another. We met up at La Finca for dinner where we had a rude busboy. Then we headed to Ohh La La Bakery in the same shopping center where I blogged a little while catching up some more with her and playing with Snapchat filters. That went on for a good hour plus.

Me with Beyonce’s face

Saturday, July 2nd

Jamie was having a little birthday celebration with her family and invited me along. While we were waiting to leave, something came over me and I grabbed a guitar, looked up some chords, and jammed out. It’s been a long time since I’ve done that and it felt good.

Niko's Niko's | Houston, Texas | Gyro Sandwich, Oven Potatoes, Dessert

We headed to Niko’s Niko’s for a late lunch where I ordered the Gyro Sandwich with oven potatoes. Meh on the potatoes. Scruffy’s fries were so much better. They ordered some desserts as well which was all too sweet for me. I surprisingly liked the Napoleon which is just Phyllo dough with cream.

Crazy Cat Escape Room | Western Saloon Robbery

After lunch, we headed to the Crazy Cat Escape Room for The Western Saloon Robbery. It was our first experience and we were not amused. We were able to escape two minutes before we were to fail. If the lady hadn’t given us clues every few minutes, we wouldn’t have gotten anything. She confessed that no one would be able to put a lot of the stuff together which translates to a poorly thought out escape room.

Scruffy and I have another one this coming Friday but with my family. I’m hoping it’ll be better since we’ll be doing a different room but I don’t have high hopes since it’s from the same company.

Jamie Coupe

Ashy had bought Jamie a Coupe as a surprise but he had to hide it in Rami and Caitlin’s garage until the big reveal. So we all headed over there to “pick up” stuff and when the garage opened – SURPRISE! She started tearing up – I love when surprises go as planned. It was my first time seeing it in person and all that came to mind was that it looks like a bumper car.

Scruffy and I went to the store and got cocktail shrimp and ingredients to make sandwiches and jalapeno dip. We watched random things on the telly then he played video games as I napped before heading home.

Sunday, July 3rd

June, the parents, and I went to Crown Seafood Restaurant for dim sum with Grandma and Kenny. This place apparently opened earlier in the year and was getting a lot of customers. They do not taste like home, but it will have to suffice.

The rest of the day was just blog fixer uppers and watching movies and telly shows. Being lazy never felt so good. I bet Rizzo loved me being home almost the entire day.

Monday, July 4th

Sissy and BIL had just arrived back from their vacation so the parents, June, and I met up with them for some Katy Pho. I’m not a big fan of this place. If you want good pho that’s worth your money, go to Pho Saigon right across the street.

I headed to Scruffy’s for some shopping after lunch. We stopped by Carl’s Jr. so that he could have a bite before heading to Petco and Marshall’s. I finally found a purse (!!) while he found a belt, socks, and a neck cushion to be used on our upcoming vacation.

BBQ Fourth of July | Connie

I had plans to work at the coffee shop after but ended up at Connie’s Fourth of July BBQ. The food was so dang good. I need to get a grill at home so I can do the same! I would grill all day, every day most of my meals if I could.

Scruffy, his Gma, and I went back to his house where he played video games with Blake while I finally sat down to fix up the blog. After Scruffy was done, we went downstairs and watched telly with his Gma while planning more of our vacation. I totally forgot we had to work the next day and on my drive home, I saw all the beautiful fireworks in the sky. It was gorgeous!

I hope you all had a great Fourth as well. Our next holiday is not until September for Labour Day. Thank goodness I have our vacation to look forward to.

Kung Fu Tea | Katy, Texas | Decor 3

The owner is cute and super polite. She told me they opened only a couple of weeks ago and her two children were there helping out as well.

Things to remember: They have happy hour every Monday thru Friday from 5 pm to 7 pm where you buy one, get one free. And like all bubble tea places, if you collect ten stamps, you’ll get one free.

Kung Fu Tea | Katy, Texas | Decor 2

They have super cute decor. I didn’t actually sit on the couches, but I overheard a lady telling her dude that they’re very comfortable.

Kung Fu Tea | Katy, Texas | Decor

This is my favourite out of the whole shop. Good use of the ceiling and a super long table if you have big groups. They have more seats and tables like these on the other side along with booth like seats. Super comfortable and bright with a lot of plugs everywhere. Perfect for working!

Kung Fu Tea | Katy, Texas | Almond Milk Tea with Nata Jelly

Almond Milk Tea | $3.50

I ordered a medium sized with half the sugar. I added nata jelly which is essentially a type of coconut jelly. At least that’s what the lady told me. It was very weird because I’m not a fan of coconut, but … this wasn’t bad.

Is it my favourite place for bubble tea in Katy? Probably not. Mostly because I get hungry after working for a few hours and not serving any foods makes this place lose some points. But since it is a chain shop, there’s nothing they can do about it, huh?

Back to organizing my pictures. So. Many. Pictures.

Samurai Noodle | Houston, Texas

March 23, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Erin and I were supposed to go to a young professionals event after work at Karbach Brewery and I was supes excited since I’ve never been before but we both ended up stuck at work and by the time we left, it was too late.

We ended up chilling at her place talking about all the different things in life and work, bonding and getting to know each other more. We were both super tired but we trudged on with great conversation. It was great just talking and hanging out with her outside of work.

We started getting hungry and ended up at:

Samurai Noodle | Houston, Texas

Samurai Noodle
1801 Durham Drive

Houston, Texas 77007
(832) 879-2982
http://samurainoodle.com

Samurai Noodle | Houston, Texas | Geso Squid

Geso [crunchy, flakey, and chewy Tempura fried squid legs] | $5.25

We both found this delicious and I want to go back for it. It’s nothing fancy but the tempura was great compared to other places. I thought it’d only be the legs but they had the body attached too.

Samurai Noodle | Houston, Texas | Tonkotsu Ramen

Tonkotsu Ramen [Tonkotsu served with kikurage (wood ear mushrooms)] | $8.95

I went with the pork broth. The “thicker” broth. I never knew they had different ramen noodles for different broth. Learn something new every day. I do want to try the chicken broth ramen next time. Erin let me try the chicken broth and it was very refreshing.

Samurai Noodle | Houston, Texas | Samurai Armor

Samurai Armor (Combo Topping) [3 slices of pork belly or shoulder, green onions, black mushrooms, marinated bamboo, a whole soft-boiled egg and roasted seaweed] | $5.50

I got this on the side just to see how it was and it didn’t disappoint. I would say next time, I’d probably just get an extra piece of pork belly, soft boiled egg, and seaweed. That was enough to make me happy.

I’m was never a big fan of ramen. But this might have changed my mind. It blew my mind. Or maybe I was just very hungry from all the conversations. If you couldn’t tell, I was definitely getting my foodie on since my wisdom teeth are to come out Thursday morning. Great meal. Gahhh I want to go back right now!
