2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Day 5

April 8, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Minie & Gohan

Look! Another dog, Gohan, getting wiped after being outside … And his owner is not Asian! Some people always thought it was weird. Also, Minnie has heartworms and cannot be jumping around so she’s been caged for a while. Poor girl.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Market House Grille | Meadville, Pennsylvania

Lily and I got ready and went to Market House Grille for breakfast. Per usual, everything tasted great but I couldn’t finish it again.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Post Office

We went to the market next door and then to the post office. My carry on ran out of room so I had to mail my souvenirs back home.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Presque Isle Drive | Erie, Pennsylvania

Liliana started driving to Erie and started taking me to a scary area. I bet it’s gorgeous once the leaves grew back.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Presque Isle | Erie, Pennsylvania

Pisque Isle was pretty. And freezing. I’m surprised there was a man bearing the cold just to fish!

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Presque Isle Lighthouse | Erie, Pennsylvania

We tried to go to the lighthouse but it was closed. I’m assuming because of the weather. I have still yet gone into a lighthouse. Sigh …

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle | Erie, Pennsylvania

We went to the environmental center to learn about how the island has changed throughout the years. It was very interactive and free! The chairs are made from recycled material which I found really interesting since it looks like wood.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Bruster's Real Ice Cream | Erie, Pennsylvania

When your best asks you if you want ice cream while you’re bawling your eyes out, you say yes.

I think I’ve found my favourite ice cream, Graham Central Station, from Bruster’s. This is the first ice cream cone I finished without hesitation. Yum! I wish I could ship some back home!

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Erie to Chicago

She stayed with me at the airport for an hour and a half as I waited to board my flight to Chicago. It’s been a while since we talked like this so it was nice.

2019 Pennsylvania Trip | Chicago to Houston

I didn’t have much time to grab anything to eat since I had to walk to my next gate. I’m currently sitting on the plane waiting for lift off. I cannot wait to be back in Houston. I only wished I was going home so I could cuddle Rizzo.

Milk Cow Houston | Katy, Texas

December 14, 2018 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Whataburger with Joel

After work I volunteered to take Joel home since it looked as if it was going to rain. We stopped by Whataburger since I haven’t eaten and he talked about his relationship woes before I dropped him off.

2018 | 348/365 | Milkcow Houston

[2018] 348/365: Milk Cow Houston

Mum’s coworker’s son opened up Milk Cow Houston in Katy and we decided to stop by. I was surprised at how light and fluffy it was! And it was nice to talk to the son and the family.

Fish City Grill with Mum

Since I hadn’t had dinner Mum joined me at Fish City Grill before going home. We overdosed on oysters. I was a but sad that the bluepoints were not fatty enough.

It’s been a long week and I’m glad I have a weekend of chill. Here’s to sleeping in all day and night!

RECIPE | Harissa Hot Sauce

2018 | 031/365 | All The Peppers For The Harissa Hot Sauce

[2018] 031/365: Peppers for Days

Guys, look how gorgeous these peppers are. Red jalapeños, green jalapeños, and serranos!

Harissa Hot Sauce

Jamie shared the recipe for Harissa Hot Sauce with me and gave me permission to share with the world. You can find the recipe at the bottom of the post.

Rizzo, Poolside Chillin'

Rizzo chilled poolside while I read my book. I was joyous that I get chances like this. It reminds me of being back in college, sitting on the balcony, studying. Soak it up, Riz!

La Michoacana Natural | Rosenberg, Texas

After Scruffy and I picked up the goodies to make the hot sauce we saw this little ice cream shop, La Michoacana Natural at the red light and decided to stop by to check it out.

La Michoacana Natural | Rosenberg, Texas | Oreo Cream Ice Cream, Pine Nut Ice Cream, and Fried Wheat Dough

Oreo Cream Ice Cream, Pine Nut Ice Cream, and Fried Wheat Dough

I think I’ve found my favourite ice cream flavour. Have you ever heard Pine Nut Ice Cream? I could have heard wrong, but the pink ice cream bar was heaven. It was so dang good that I bought a 16 oz home! I’ve already told Scruffy I want to go back. The only problem is that the parking sucked. This little shop has been here for fifteen years though so it’s doing something right!

Harissa Hot Sauce
Course: Dips & Sauces
Ingredients
  • 2 1/2 lb red jalapeño peppers
  • 1/4 lb serrano peppers
  • 1/4 lb green jalapeño peppers
  • 1 bulb of garlic
  • 2 tbsp caraway seeds
  • 2 tbsp coriander grounded
  • 1 tbsp cumin grounded
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil + a little more to seal jar
Preparations
  1. For the peppers, using gloves, slice the tops off, then in half. Discard the white membrane and some of the seeds as desired.

  2. In a blender, add peppers, garlic, caraway seeds, coriander, cumin, salt, and 2 tbsp of olive oil. Blend into a salsa consistency.

  3. Pour into a jar and add a little olive oil on top to seal the jar.

  4. Store in the fridge and after each use, add a little bit of olive oil to reseal the jar.

Notes

*Use gloves. The peppers will burn and send you to the emergency room!

**The olive oil will help keep the hot sauce fresher for longer.

2018 Lake Charles, Louisiana | Day 2

January 5, 2018 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2018 | 005/365 | Golden Nugget Casino | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Slot Winner

[2018] 005/365: Cashing Out

Steamboat Bill's Seafood Restaurant | Lake Charles, Louisiana

Scruffy started the day working while I slept in a bit more then we both headed to lunch at Steamboat Bill’s Seafood Restaurant.

Steamboat Bill's Seafood Restaurant | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Shrimp & Crawfish Pistolettes, Boudin Ball, & Small Platter

Shrimp Pistolette | $1.99; Crawfish Pistolette | $2.29; Boudin Ball | $1.99; Small Platter [stuffed shrimp, fried fish, stuffed crab, 10-20 medium shrimp, fries, cole slaw, & Louisiana roll] | $19.99

We’ve learned we don’t need to order as much food as we use to so we usually order a plate and something on the side. Since crawfish wasn’t in season we both loved the shrimp pistolette more. Boudin ball wasn’t too bad but wasn’t the best and out of the small platter the best was the fish and shrimp.

Golden Nugget Casino | Lake Charles, Louisiana

We then headed to Golden Nugget Casino. We both won more than we spent so that’s a good feeling.

Crying Eagle Brewing Company | Lake Charles, Louisiana

We cashed out then went to the store to buy some knickknacks. We went back home where I took a short nap and he worked before we headed off to Crying Eagle Brewing Company.

Crying Eagle Brewing Company | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Beers

I got the one beer while Scruffy had five. We played Ascension on the IPad while we sipped. Its a free app!! Everyone should try it out!

Crying Eagle Brewing Company | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Gift Shop

The brewing company had a gift shop and it was nice walking through it to see things like this cup. Too funny.

Calla | Lake Charles, Louisiana

We went back home, debated to go to a casino buffet or not and ended up at Calla.

Calla | Lake Charles, Louisiana | Old Fashioned and Bone Marrow

Bone Marrow [with onion jam, herb salad, toast] | $17

Scruffy got the Old Fashioned while I sipped on water – I’m a good DD. We shared the bone marrow and though we weren’t disappointed, we didn’t truly know how delicious it was until the second one. The waiter brought another out for the man who was sitting next to us a minute ago. He had paid and left, forgetting (he was drunk) he ordered bone marrow. The nice bartender offered it to us free of charge! Free food always taste better!

Isle of Capri Casino | Lake Charles, Louisiana

The last casino of the night was at Isle of Capri Casino. I was not a big fan of this place since it reeked of smoke. Everyone could smoke wherever they stood. Ugh! I wished I had known before we walked in. It wasn’t a great start – I left Scruffy when he was down eighty dollars and when I got back, he had a smile and was up forty so we bid farewell to this stinky, smokey place.

Dairy Queen | Lake Charles, Louisiana

We stopped by Dairy Queen. I got a mini M&M ice cream – still too much for me. Scruffy got steak fingers. We headed home and he is waiting patiently for me to type this up so that we could watch Game of Thrones before calling it a night.

We are thinking of eating at a casino buffet tomorrow. Eeep, cannot wait!

You Light Up My Life

September 18, 2017 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Museum of Fine Arts | Houston, Texas | Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish

This past Saturday, my love surprised me by taking me to the Museum of Fine Arts for Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish exhibit. Watch the video below for a short clip of it I took.

Finally got to see Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish exhibit at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Heart is happy. @mfahouston . . . . . #art #pixelforest #worrywillvanish #pipilottirist #mfah #htx #houston #texas #exhibit #instaart #light #fairylights #colorful #happy #happyheart #melliedeephotography

A post shared by Melissa || Mellie (@malohaho) on Sep 16, 2017 at 12:58pm PDT

My heart is so happy. This is what I want one of my rooms to be in my future house but I wouldn’t even know where to hang them. Sigh … so happy.

Pho Binh 59 South | Houston, Texas

He even went to Pho Binh 59 South with me even though he craved a nice, juicy Grub burger. I ordered the vermicelli special bowl that comes with pork, chicken, and shrimp. The pork is hands down the best I’ve ever had anywhere.

Khun Kay Thai Cafe | Houston, Texas

Afterward we met up with Rami and Caitlin Khun Kay Thai Cafe so that Caitlin can grab a bite. We watched her eat while catching up before heading back to their house to play 42 or Texas 42, a domino game.

Moody Ice | Houston, Texas

We headed to the public library for Caitlin to pick up a book that was on hold and went to Moody Ice since it was such a hot day out.

Moody Ice | Houston, Texas | Coconut Hawaiian Shaved Ice

Hawaiian Shaved Ice [coconut syrup, condensed milk, Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, and fresh fruit]

Scruffy and I shared a coconut flavoured one. We were both surprised how much we liked it! YUM!! We played a Russian card game that I cannot remember the name to before heading back to their house where more 42 was played before their friend Sam came over. We all hung out, planned a bro’s shower (baby), and when Sam left, played Trivial Pursuit board game edition.

Houston Art Museum | Houston, Texas | Pipilotti Rist: Pixel Forest and Worry Will Vanish Exhibit

When we got back to Scruffy’s, we ordered UberEats since we hadn’t had a proper dinner meal. Scruffy ate and played Destiny 2 with Blake while I stuffed my face, watched telly and searched for jobs.

Mellie Dee & Rizzo Sleeping

Sunday morning, we picked up Pei Wei to have lunch at Andrew’s house and then Scruffy and I hung out a bit at his own house before I headed home. After a long cuddle session with him I headed over to Sarah’s to go through the run down for her wedding this coming weekend. I’m coordinating her wedding and after four hours of going through everything with her, I think it’ll be perfectly fine. Fingers crossed!
