Inaugural 2011 Houston Beer Fest

August 1, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2011 Houston Beer Fest

I was looking through my pictures on my camera and realized … I never wrote about my beer fest experience! So here I am more than a month later, writing it.

I’ve been wanting to go to a beer fest since I’ve heard about it and when Houston was going to have one I begged Sissy, Mum, and June to go but everyone ignored me.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Crowd

It wasn’t until Groupon had a deal. Thank you, Groupon. Only Sissy, Mum, and I ended up going though. But many people were in the Groupon line. Oy vey.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Crowd 2

It was set at Hermann Square Park – worst place to have a beer fest with the amount of people around. There was not enough standing space and it was freaking hot out. People started standing in the pond and the security kept trying to get them out. They started to give up trying to get them out though.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | New Belgium

Each of our tickets came with 10 free drinking stubs which was pretty sweet. For my first tasting, I got an amazing New Belgium Fat Tire. Sadly, our first tasting was also our last.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | New Belgium Fat Tire

By the time we made our way around to the other booths .. all the beer were out. All that was left were the usual beers that you drink when you don’t want to buy anything expensive. It was a waste of money because experiencing a beer fest is to try stuff you never would. Sigh …

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Samosas

We ended up just pigging out on samosas, Asian food, pineapple drink, funnel cake, sausage on a stick, curly fries, and sweet tea.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Asian Food

We paid for all our food except for the teas which was paid for by tickets. We gave the rest of our tickets to some stranger that just came in. I hope he had more fun than us.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Pineapple Drink

I understand this is their first ever Beer Fest here in Houston so I’m not mad at how it turned out. I just wished they thought this through more. They have to know that Houston goes crazy wild with drinking. Especially when you put it on Groupon or Living Social or any other site to help promote your event … you’re going to be getting A LOT of customers.

I hope next year it’ll be better. But now I can cross it off my Bucket List! and tell everyone I’ve been to an inaugural beer fest.Winking smile

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Sweet Leaf Peach Ice Tea

I probably won’t go to one for a really long time here in Houston … maybe a few years when they know for sure how things go.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Sweet Tea

I know they’ll be having a wine fest though so … if you guys are interested, go check it out. It’s in September I believe and they should know how things go now.

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas

July 31, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

For lunch, Saturday, Mum, June, and I went to the:

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas

Lasagna House III
13306 Westheimer Road,
Houston, TX
(281) 496-9114

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas | Garlic Bread

You get free Garlic Bread. Pretty much all you can eat.

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas | Salad

The same goes for the Salad. They even let you pick your own choice of dressing.

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas | Stuffed Jalapenos

Stuffed Jalapenos [jalapeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese, lightly breaded and deep fried] | $5.99

These were 100% better than the ones we got from Red Oak Grill. Their marinara sauce that came with it was divine. I dipped some garlic bread in it. Yum!

Lasagna House III | Houston, Texas | Cannelloni Meat

Cannelloni Meat [large pasta tubes stuffed with meat, topped with Pomodoro Sauce and shredded mozzarella and baked] | $10.99

They went heavy on the cheese which I ended up ripping off and giving to Mum. Even with the missing layer of cheese, the layer of chopped up meat makes the dish. They gave so much that I had a lot of leftovers.

Whole Foods Loot

After lunch, we went to the new Whole Foods at Montrose. We all felt like a kid in a candy shop and bought a lot of unnecessary goodies.

I channeled my inner child and watched Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure. She goes to New York to audition for Broadway and ends up finding out the part was for her dog, Boy. I will admit that even though her voice is all squeaky and such, the movie itself was very sweet and I ended up liking it more than I thought I would.

Hope you guys had a great weekend!!

Little Napoli Italian Cuisine | Houston, Texas

July 15, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Last night I met up with Amanda to celebrate my super belated birthday. So after work I went home to do my usual home things, I headed into traffic.

Little Napoli Italian Cuisine | Houston, Texas | Garlic Bread

They had Garlic Bread | free. Amanda already had some because of my tardiness.

I wasn’t a big fan of the bread. It was burnt on the other side and a little on the chewy, hard side.

Amanda said she liked it but I think she was just hungry waiting for me.

Little Napoli Italian Cuisine | Houston, Texas | Salad

Our meal came with a very simple Salad. Always need to get my veggies in. I just wished they gave us more onions.

Little Napoli Italian Cuisine | Houston, Texas | Beef Cannelloni

Beef Cannelloni [rolled pasta sheets stuffed with a mixture of ground beef and vegetables and topped with Marinara Sauce & Mozzarella Cheese then baked in the oven] | $9.99.

I’ve never had this before because I usually stick to what I know but we all gotta live so I took the chance. When they first served it I was thinking … what did I order?! But when I took my first bite … OH MY GOODNESS! It was so good! I want to recreate this at home!

Little Napoli Italian Cuisine | Houston, Texas | Chocolate Mousse

Amanda wanted me to pick the dessert but since she’s a sweets lover unlike me, I let her chose and ended up with the Chocolate Mousse | $9.99.

It was soooo good!! The icing was very chocolatey, almost dark chocolate like. For a non-sweets fan myself, I ate my fair share.

Amanda

This is the first time putting up a picture of someone other than me so hopefully, she doesn’t get angry when she finds her face plastered on here. But meet Amanda. Isn’t she cute?! She was a sweetheart and paid for my meal. Thanks, girlie!

Anyway, we talked a lot. We were there for over 2 hours even after we were done eating. We caught up with what has been going on with one another since May and what we see coming up this year. We are looking forward to a fun, fun year. Here’s to hoping!!

I had a really good time with her and am so happy I got to see her and catch up.

Saltgrass Steakhouse | Houston, Texas

July 3, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Tonight Brother and Sissy took Timothy out for his belated graduation dinner. I tagged along.

We went to:

Saltgrass Steakhouse
8943 Katy Freeway
Houston TX
(713) 461-6111
saltgrass.com

Saltgrass Steakhouse | Houston, Texas | Shiner Bock Soda Bread

Sissy was already waiting at the restaurant when me, Brother, and Timothy got there. This was sitting on the table and our first question was, “Is this real?!”

And real it was. It’s their very own Shiner Bock Beer Bread [with butter] | free. Yum. It was very melt-in-your-mouth kind of deal and very wheaty tasting. It was gone pretty quickly.

Sissy went on ordering the Artichoke and Spinach dip for us to share … but the manager came out and told us it was out. He did ask if we wanted something else instead, giving us other options customers love.

Saltgrass Steakhouse | Houston, Texas | French Fried Onions

We ended up getting the French Fried Onions [thinly sliced & piled high served with our border sauce] | $6.49. It wasn’t a favorite for me. The onions were too thinly sliced (guess that’s why it’s french?) and it was too much batter than onions. We couldn’t even taste the onions.

Saltgrass Steakhouse | Houston, Texas | Chuck Wagon Cheese Fries

We also ordered the Chuck Wagon Cheese Fries [fried potatoes, topped with melted jack & cheddar cheese, bacon, sour cream, & chives] | $6.99. When we ordered this, we asked for bacon on the side. But when it came to us, bacon was everywhere! So we told the manager and he fixed it right up for us! This was a win! We all loved this. And ate it all up!

Because of kitchen error and server error, we ended up not having to pay for our French Fried Onions or Chuck Wagon Cheese Fries. WIN WIN WIN!

Saltgrass Steakhouse | Houston, Texas | Chopped Sirloin Steak with Mashed Potatoes and Potato Soup

For my main entree I got the Chopped Sirloin Steak [Certified Angus Beef ground steak topped with: grilled onions, cheddar cheese & diced tomatoes OR grilled onions, sauteed mushrooms & cognac pepper sauce] | $14.99. Plus you get either soup or salad with your entree. I got Potato soup.

The potato soup was a big soupy, thick deliciousness. The chopped sirloin was not up to par with others that I’ve had before. It wasn’t disgusting but it wasn’t great. I only had 1/4 and packed the rest home. The mashed potatoes were a fluffy cloud of goodness but I packed the rest home as well since it should go pretty well with the steak.

Those free appetizers really filled me up. And on top of that, Sissy ordered a Shiner Bock before we arrived and she needed help with it.

We had the worst server in the earth of servers. He wasn’t attentive and rarely checked in on us and kept getting things incorrect. Though he tried to smile through you could tell he was unhappy working there. Sir, please quit your job. You would be so much happier.

But that didn’t make us angry with our meal. We had fun together reminiscing and talking about future things. Then we went back to our house and played Partini. Never heard of it?! It’s like charades but better.

Sissy, Timothy, and I never played before. We chose teams and in the end, brother and I won.

So far it’s been a good 4 day weekend. Not anything to really complain about except for the whole getting sick thing.

Tomorrow Brett is coming in and we’re going to bbq for Fourth of July. Sahweet!!

What are your plans for Fourth of July day?!

Time to relax. Night y’all!!

A Whole Lotta Words

July 1, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

I was the only one in the family that had to work today but work got a little easier when Mum called to let me know we were going to Tokyo One for dinner with June and Dad. Since it wasn’t a thrilling experience last time and the price went up from $25 to $27.99 per person, I debated on going.

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | View

But since I rarely get to see Dad I sucked it up and went. Outside our window was this wonderful view. There were even turtles but I didn’t have the right angle to take a picture of them.

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | Buffet

I actually didn’t eat the crab but took a picture anyway because it was scary huge.

The green tea ice cream was not up to par as last times. Such a disappointment. The other ice cream is red bean ice cream. It tasted more like raspberries.

I really liked our waiter this time around. He came and picked up our plates pretty much every five minutes. We’re fast eaters.

I really don’t think me coming here is such a good deal since I don’t love it like they do but I guess whatever I have to do to spend time with Dad! Plus I didn’t have to pay!!

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | Bill

Look at that bill!

Late last week, I made plans with Nicole to meet up at Baker Street Pub then found out Brudda was coming into town as well. Since I get a whole week with him, I decided to not cancel on Nicole. We always had a friend with us because we knew some of the same people despite graduating with 1000+ back in 2007 so this is the first time it was one-on-one.

We talked about a lot of personal things. And I feel even closer to her. It feels good to trust someone with things you don’t tell people.

While we were there trying to have a conversation over the loud music, a guy came up to us and asked us if he could buy us a beer. We declined.  I always get awkward when people come up to me and do that, plus we both had to drive home after.

Our waitress kept asking if we needed anything else and we kept saying no. She finally told us the same guy had told her he will pick up the tab to whatever else we ordered. Still creeps me out.

All in all, after a long and tiring week of work, it was good to unwind with Nicole. I’ve missed her so much and it was definitely great to see her again. We’re planning for something next week but it depends on how busy our schedules are.

Good night blog world! 🙂
