2016 Summer Getaway | Day 2

August 11, 2016 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

When we were about to head out the door for breakfast, Scruffy asked me which place we had agreed on. After walking for a good few minutes, I realized I told him the wrong one. We walked back to the one we originally wanted to go to which was literally down the street from where we were staying. Whoops.

Moore Coffee Shop | Seattle, Washington

Moore Coffee Shop
1930 2nd Ave
Seattle, Washington 98101
(206) 883-7044
http://moorecoffeeshop.com

Moore Coffee Shop | Seattle, Washington | Hazelnut Latte & Nutella Latte

The Hazelnut Latte was originally mine but he found his Nutella Latte too sweet, masking the coffee flavour so we ended up switching.

I snapped this picture in my story asking people if the Nutella Latte was a monkey or an onion face. And one of the responses I got was hilarious.

Monkey or Onion ... Potato

Rosanna coincidentally had the same dilemma. What’s even funnier is that she wrote potato when she meant onion and excused herself because she might be drunk already.

Moore Coffee Shop | Seattle, Washington | Strawberry Blueberry Shortcake Waffle

He chose a sweet approach of Strawberry Blueberry Shortcake Waffle which was airy and crispy. I stole a lot of his delicious blueberries. Mmm …

Moore Coffee Shop | Seattle, Washington | Monte Cristo Waffle

I was a little hesitant to order the Monte Cristo Waffle because the cheese scared me a bit. But I’m glad I did because it was delicious, savory waffle to counter Scruffy’s sweet one.

I secretly wished we went back the next day for some more waffles.

Have a Heart | Seattle, Washington

As we were walking, we saw another weed shop but this one looked simpler on the outside to where you could think it’s a fitness place.

Have a Heart | Seattle, Washington | Mural with Mellie Dee & Scruffy

Scruffy & I in front of the mural

We saw a giant mural of a rolled up joint and the bouncer told us that many people come in to snap a picture with it and we could do the same if we wanted to … so we did. Thanks, Bouncer Dude!

Seattle Aquarium | Seattle, Washington

Seattle Aquarium
1483 Alaskan Way
Seattle, Washington 98101
(206) 386-4300
http://seattleaquarium.org

Seattle Aquarium | Seattle, Washington | Under the Sea

One of the main things Scruffy wanted to do was to go to the Seattle Aquarium and so we did! There were a lot of people there that day. Kids were running wild everywhere you turned which made it difficult to get around and see things.

Seattle Aquarium | Seattle, Washington | Otters

It was pretty neat to see so many different species that live in the ocean especially the otters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them in any other aquariums I’ve been too. I can watch them tumble around for hours if I could.

Seattle Aquarium | Seattle, Washington | Nemo

I even found Nemo searching for his daddy.

Seattle Aquarium | Seattle, Washington | Scruffy & his Telescope

Scruffy & his telescope

After a long while at the aquarium, we put a quarter in a telescope. He spent his time on that thing, mostly looking at the mountains. I wish we had time to go over to there and hike. Sigh … one day.

Public Market Center | Seattle, Washington

We were going to sit by a bar with a Space Needle view but somehow ended back up at the Public Market Center. Luckily enough, we ran into the

Gum Wall | Seattle, Washington

Gum Wall
1428 Post Alley
Seattle, Washington 98101

Gum Wall | Seattle, Washington | Graffiti

I felt unclean being in that unsanitary alley but loved looking at all the different graffiti. Scruffy kept rushing me though since we wanted to hit many sushi happy hours.

Marijuana Leaf | Seattle, Washington

When we got back to our AirBnB, this little marijuana leaf was sitting on the hallway floor. It’s so legal that you actually get to see the leaves?!

We then took an Uber to our next destination and it wasn’t until way after that we realized that we didn’t stick our own gum on the wall.

Flying Fish | Seattle, Washington

Flying Fish
300 Westlake Ave N
Seattle, Washington 98109
(206) 728-8595
http://flyingfishseattle.com

Flying Fish | Seattle, Washington | Oysters & Mussels

We ordered six Fresh Oyster on Half Shell | $1 and six Large Green Mussels on Half Shell | $0.88. They had rules to where you have to order a minimum of six per order of each type with a limit of two dozen of each type per person.

They were both equally delicious, but I’ve never had mussels prepared this way so it drew me in more. Scruffy on the other hand loved the oysters more.

Flying Fish | Seattle, Washington | Truffle Fries

These are by far one of the best Truffle Fries [French truffle sea salt] | $6 I’ve ever eaten and Scruffy was nice enough to let me eat a majority of them.

When it came time to decide if we wanted to order more food, especially since we were going to other sushi places, I contemplated really hard on ordering more fries.

Flying Fish | Seattle, Washington | Oysters

But we stuck with oysters because you can’t get such amazingness down south like that.

Space Needle | Seattle, Washington | At a Distance

As we were walking to our next destination, we were able to see the Space Needle from afar. It was then that Scruffy decided going there might actually be worthwhile to look out into the horizon so we decided after all of our sushi eating, we would head out there to see if we can get tickets.

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington

Umi Sake House
2230 1st Ave
Seattle, Washington 98121
(206) 374-8717
http://umisakehouse.com

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Edamame

Free | Edamame is the best edamame but we didn’t want to fill up on them so we only ate a few of these bad boys.

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Sake Bombs

We ordered a Beer and Sake. It’s fancier up here to where they aren’t big fans of sake bombs so we literally took sake shots and downed the beer as a chaser. Not the same but it was still fun.

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Tuna Sashimi

He would only let me order one Tuna Sashimi | $8 order to try and see if it’s good and boy was it good! Keep in mind these are happy hour prices.

Look how thick the slices are! Back home they would cut them really thin and make us pay $10! And oh my goodness … they melt in your mouth! I could eat this every day!

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Calamari

He was craving Calamari, which is weird to me that anyone would be craving that but he got what he wanted. After eating the sashimi, all I could think about was that and craved only that so he had to finish the majority up himself.

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Spider Roll

He also really wanted a Spider Roll which was only okay. I mean, why you would get anything else but raw fish at this restaurant is beyond me!

Umi Sake House | Seattle, Washington | Albacore Sashimi & Salmon Sashimi

He finally agreed and let me order Albacore Sashimi and Salmon Sashimi both $8/type. He liked the albacore more whereas I liked the salmon more. But we both agreed the tuna was the best. Just looking at this while I write this post makes my mouth water.

Graffiti | Seattle, Washington

We went back to our AirBnB to change and put down our backpack since we had time until our reservations. Everywhere you turn, there’s graffiti and it’s actually kind of relaxing to see.

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington

Shiro’s
2401 2nd Ave
Seattle, Washington 98121
(206) 443-9844
http://shiros.com

They didn’t have happy hour but it was one of the top places for sushi so Scruffy made reservations here which I’m thankful for because it was SO FREAKING GOOD! And because when we looked out the window, we saw a lot of people waiting to get in due to the fact that it is a small location.

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington | SakeBombs

We ordered more Beer and Sake shot and chaser style. I loved that their little cups have their logo on it!

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington | Rainbow Poke

I was surprised that Scruffy actually liked the Rainbow Poke [Assortment of seafood with our original sauce] | $9.50. Poke, forever.

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington | Geso Kara-age Fried Squid Legs

Geso Kara-age [deep fried squid legs] | $6.50 weren’t as big of a hit. He’s not a big fan of chewy things and the batter was just okay.

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington | King Crab Nigiri, Sea Eel Nigiri, Zuke Tuna Nigiri

He ordered a King Crab Nigiri while I got a Sea Eel Nigiri and a Zuke Tuna Nigiri. Oh my goodness. The Zuke Tuna was amazing! It was my first time and sigh … take me back please.

Shiro's Sushi | Seattle, Washington | Sweet Shrimp & Fried Shrimp Heads

I kept seeing people have fried shrimp heads and was curious because it wasn’t on the menu. We asked the waiter and he said it came with the Sweet Shrimp Nigiri. Two orders please!

Best. Thing. Ever. I’ve never had sweet shrimp and now all I want to do is eat it! The fried shrimp heads kind of freaked Scruffy out and kind of cringed when I ate the entire thing, eyeballs and all. But I love the fact that he’ll try anything once so I shared the non-eyeball part of it with him and he wasn’t a fan. Sigh … what a waste.

Space Needle | Seattle, Washington

We walked over to the Space Needle to buy tickets but since we were late in purchasing, we had to book a later time which meant we had to wait.

Sport Restaurant and Bar | Seattle, Washington

Sport Restaurant & Bar
140 4th Ave N #130
Seattle, Washington 98109
(206) 404-7767
http://sportrestaurant.com

We walked over here for a beer while I sipped on water. I didn’t want to fill up on beer if we had a chance of eating yummy goodness!

My old friend, Carla, saw my Snapchat of the Ferris wheel and asked to meet up since she and Andrew, her husband, now lives in Seattle. We use to all hang out back in college, then Carla and I did one-on-ones after college.

Armory | Seattle, Washington

Blue Water Taco Grill
515 Queen Anne Ave N
Seattle, Washington 98119
(206) 352-2407
http://bluewatertacogrill.com/

We agreed to meet up at the Armory, a Children’s Museum downstairs with different restaurants upstairs. When we got there, a lot of the places were closing and this was the only one opened. The boys grabbed a beer, Carla a margarita, and me water and we caught up and talked about random things until our 9:30 PM Space Needle appointment.

Space Needle | Seattle, Washington | Sunset View

Space Needle
400 Broad St.
Seattle, Washington 98109
(206) 905-2100
http://spaceneedle.com

We were a little bummed we didn’t get to see it when the sky was lit but loved the wonderful burning sky. These pictures do not do it justice. He and I joked a lot throughout the trip whenever we see wonderful landscape that Bob Ross did a great job. haha

Space Needle | Seattle, Washington | Night View

We stayed up there for a really long time … mostly taking in the view and trying to figure out how to take a picture of the background with us in it. There was a lot of fails and a okay-I-give-up-this-is-good-enough photo.

Some Random Bar | Seattle, Washington

Some Random Bar
2604 1st Ave

Seattle, Washington 98121
http://somerandombar.com

We were in search of food, like always. Scruffy ordered a beer and we realized their kitchen has just closed. But I still recommend this bar a lot. The lady that we spoke to was very nice especially when we asked if there were any bars around here with food and made conversation with us. She pointed us to our next and last destination of the night.

Buckley's | Seattle, Washington

Buckley’s
2331 2nd Ave
Seattle, Washington 98121
(206) 588-8879
http://buckleysseattle.com

Buckley's | Seattle, Washington | Buckley's Thai Sesame Ribs 1

Buckley’s Thai Sesame Ribs (3) [with sweet Thai chili sauce] | $6 was one of Scruffy’s most delicious food he’s had here, which to me is sad because they weren’t good at all. It was featured on Food Network’s “Best Bar Food” so, maybe my taste buds suck or maybe I have higher taste than bar food. haha

Buckley's | Seattle, Washington | Garlic Tater Tots

Tater Tots [with chipotle ranch; garlic optional] | $4 was one of the best things ever. We definitely did the garlic option and they did not skimp out on that. I kept trying to shove more garlic with his bites so our breaths would be equally disgusting.

Buckley's | Seattle, Washington | Blackened Chicken Tacos

Blackened Chicken Tacos (2) [with flour tortilla, pico de gallo, lettuce, shredded cheese, chipotle ranch on the side] | $6 was a local favourite but it wasn’t ours. We tried out best to down them because it was dry and not appetizing. Seattle locals, please come visit Houston for chicken tacos. They won’t disappoint like these did.

Buckley's | Seattle, Washington | Buckley's Thai Sesame Ribs 2

He loved the ribs so much, he ordered a second plate and made me help him eat them. And when we left the place, he took a billion pictures on his phone of the place because he wanted to remember the place where he got one of the best dishes he’s eaten.

Sigh … that boy.

We headed back to our AirBnB and called it a night since we had a long drive ahead of us the next day.

Whiskey Cake | San Antonio, Texas

Hinee Gourmet Coffee | San Antonio, Texas

FRIDAY | After a super long drive due to so many accidents on the way, I arrived at Hinee Gourmet Coffee shop drained. I loved seeing this, though. You can put a book down and get a new one to read. After about an hour, Patricia got off work and I headed over to her house where we caught up about life while she got ready.

FTK Alumni Dinner

Thuy, Me, Patricia

FTK was having an Alumni dinner and since I haven’t seen some people in a while (January) I figured I’d show up. I was happy to see some poopies I haven’t seen in forever, one being Andrew. I haven’t seen him in almost a year. I guess having distance away from someone you use to see and talk to every single day changes your point of view of that person. Seeing him and holding a conversation with him was a little weird. But he’s happier and knowing that is comfort enough in my little heart.

Pub Run St Patty's San Antonio, Texas | Hurricanes & Patricia

Me & Patricia

A few of them headed to Top Golf while the rest of us headed over to the Pub Run. This is only my second pub run and I must say that I’m over it. Sorry, Andy, if you’re ever reading this. I’m not about that life. haha

Pub Run St Patty's San Antonio, Texas | Friends

L: Andy, Me, Patricia, Jessica, Christina, Alyssa
R: Me & Andy

But I will say I do like being active for almost five hours. Walking and constant dancing. No one in Houston is down to go dancing with me so that was the main reason I went. Patricia bought me a hurricane and it did nothing to me. And it tasted like toilet water. It wasn’t good at all. Ugh … waste of money.

Pub Run St Patty's San Antonio, Texas | Kremlin

We ended at Kremlin where we danced non-stop. I had to take a picture of this because it was just too pretty.

SATURDAY | I planned to head home but they wanted to do brunch before I left. So …

Whiskey Cake | San Antonio, Texas

Whiskey Cake | San Antonio, Texas | Benedict

Benedict [slow roasted pulled pork, local sunny side up eggs, toasted baguette, farmhouse tomato, smoked chili hollandaise, seasonal fruit] | $11

I liked the runniness of the eggs that covered the baguette to make it soft. The flavours were, meh, for me, so although I like the ambience, I don’t think I’d come back to order this dish again.

Whiskey Cake | San Antonio, Texas | Hand Cut Parmesan Fries

Hand Cut Parmesan Fries | ~$3

But I will come back to order like five orders of this, though. It was that good. I wanted to order some on the drive back, but I’m sure my friends would think I’m a fat ass, if they haven’t already.

Whiskey Cake | San Antonio, Texas | Mellie Dee

We started talking about trips again and we found some pretty cheap flights to Aruba around my birthday week so I got super excited. I don’t know if we’d actually end up going and if we do, who all is going with us but it would be pretty nice to go on a friends trip because I need one. If we don’t end up going, I’m probably going to go to Hawaii or something fancy with June. Either way, I’m going on a dang trip this year.

San Antonio to Houston Drive

The drive home wasn’t too bad. I actually made it in record time.

I felt pretty bad, though. Thirty to forty minutes into my drive, Jakob texts me and tells me he’s finally free. He was willing to drive to where I was if I wasn’t too gone but I said I’ll just see him when I see him which most likely will be in April.

And on the drive, I kept getting text messages. Andy had mass texted and emailed everyone that we were wanting to go to Aruba. haha Seems like things are flowing to a yes, but we’ll see. We’ll see.

Mellie Dee & Rizzo Cuddles

When I got home, I was so pooped. Rizzo climbed into bed with me and cuddled. We slept like that for a good hour plus. I love when he lays on me.

Cravin' Cajun Crawfish | Katy, Texas

I knew Dad was off so I made sure to come back to have dinner with the family. They let me pick which is a dumb choice because around this time of the year, I’ll always pick crawfish. And surprisingly, they let me get it!

The rest of the night I received text messages from San Antonians to see if I was down to hang out. I forgot to tell them I had already left. I usually stay until Sunday so they were quite bummed. Next time, my loves, next time.

Beer Tower | Sammy

Then it was drinking time with Sammy because that’s all we ever do. I was surprised he asked if I wanted a beer tower. I’ve always wanted to try a beer tower. I mean, I know it’s nothing fancy, but it’s still super cool. I can finally check that off my list! Our server was probably quietly judging us because Sammy says that this is usually for three to four people.

I snapped a picture of this and I got questions on, how do you even drink that? … Because they thought you drink it like you would with a beer bong. haha

Vero's Baby Shower

SUNDAY | I had a list of things I had to take care of but I was too lazy and tired. And by the time I realized what time it was, I had to get ready. Zuco was throwing Vero a surprise baby shower. And I was super excited for the food. I haven’t had great Mexican food in so long and I knew this was going to be the bomb dot com. (Yes people still say that.) I caught up with their family and played with Ryland and met new people.

Bruno Kato Rizzo Sleeping

Bruno, Kato, Rizzo

I took today off to finish my meal prepping that I started yesterday. And because I just didn’t want to deal with people after such a glorious weekend filled with my loves and cuddling with all the poopies.

Dish Society | Katy, Texas | Half Quinoa Stuffed Avocado

Half Quinoa Stuffed Avocado [avocado half topped with citrus quinoa relish] | $5

Is it worth the $5? No. But was it delicious? Yes. I’m contemplating making this for my lunches next week. It was that good and simple enough. Our house is always filled with quinoa and avocados so it shouldn’t be too hard. I just have to get the sauce just right.

Dish Society | Katy, Texas | Grilled Chicken Pasta

Grilled Chicken Pasta [linguini, texas pecan pesto, tomato, grilled chicken breast, parsley] | $13.50

It didn’t come with a lot for that price but it was good. Not much to say about it. Just regular pesto pasta.

Would I come back to Dish Society? Probably not unless someone makes me. It’s pricey, not much choices to where I’d want to come back and try something else. Plus their service was a little slow. It was fine until they had more people come in so we were waiting a long time for our waiter to take our order, to give us our food, and to get the check.

Sweet Boutique | Katy, Texas | Macaroons

We had a little dessert at The Sweet Boutique. I’ve been to the one in City Centre enough times but surprisingly never tried this one. Fruity Pebble, Cookies & Creme, Key Lime, Blueberry. I’ve never seen any of these flavours over at City Centre. They probably have it and I missed it but it was nice not having the usual macaroons.

Tim & Tara’s Wedding

April 30, 2015 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

This weekend was pretty much a mess – stressful, ugly mess. I understand that plans change, but for those that want to join in on plans that have been made should go with the flow. But overall, having certain people around made it not so bad.

Thai Iced Coffee | $4.40

Jalapeno Mac-n-Cheese | pepperjack, cheddar and a touch of jalapeno topped with breadcrumbs | $6.00

Turkey Brie | oven roasted turkey, mushroom pesto and melted brie on toasted ciabatta with a side salad | $8.50

Chicken Pesto | grilled chicken, basil pesto, sundried tomato and melted provolone on toasted ciabatta with a side salad | $8.00

One of the best little places I’ve been. It was super busy and I could see why. he food was delectable. Apurva and I shared all the food and it was too much. I couldn’t finish it. I would definitely come back again to try all the other things they have to offer.

20150424_223137 (1)

Julia and her boyfriend, Rich, met us at Halcyon where I spent the whole night just catching up with Julia. It’s been 2 years since I’ve seen her. Although I felt horrible for not talking to the others, I figured we had the whole rest of the weekend so I wasn’t worried. Not pictured: Marisol.

We did bar hopping. Wherever the others wanted to go, Julia and Rich would take us. The best and nicest people you could ever meet.

Then we went to 6th street. Partying is never my scene and after a while Apurva, Patricia and I decided to head back to the hotel so we could shower and not have a freaking long line. Liliana, Marisol, and Gary stayed partying.

Although the plans we thought we were going to have the night before didn’t happen, today didn’t happen either but Apurva and I made the best of it.

Ironman Omelet | spinach, bacon, mushrooms, and Swiss cheese with hashbrowns and toast | $7.99

Café Java was so freaking amazingly good. I understand breakfast food is pretty much the same everywhere but their hashbrowns got me. I could eat a whole entire plate forever. I subbed their bacon with sausage which was not dry or gritty. It was just right. Oh em gee. Best omelet. Seriously, go here if you are ever in Austin and want breakfast.

PicMonkey Collage (3)

Our plan was to climb Mount Bonnell to see the sunset but that didn’t happen. Apurva and I decided to climb it anyway even though it felt like 5 bajillion degrees out. When we got to the top which seriously isn’t much to climb (only a few flight of stairs), you could feel the breeze and the view was too perfect.

Tim & Tara tied the knot! She was gorgeous. Freaking gorgeous. Her dress is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. She looked fantastic!! I can tell she put a lot of work to get that body! So proud of her and so happy for them both.

I met Tara summer of 2008 through another friend and we kept in touch once in a blue moon. Tim was in FTK with me and the picture below is a picture of the dysfunctional FTK family.

I had a lot of fun at the wedding. And it was great catching up with everyone. I get to see them again tonight for a last hurrah since our advisors from FTK are retiring/quitting. Sad but excited because time with these people makes my heart happy.

Short and sweet. Happy almost Friday!

Recipe | Congee

December 30, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

If you’re Chinese you would know what Congee is. Or in my language, Jook. It’s a type of rice porridge. I remember eating it when I was sick or on Sundays.

Ever since I went off to college I ate less and less of it. I wasn’t home anymore where my mum can make it for me and if I went out for it, it would cost an arm and a leg.

My mum is letting me take the 3 quart (?) Crock Pot to college for my last semester and I am so excited.

So excited, I decided to try it out and make congee last night.

2011-12-29 22.29.02

I know it may look disgusting but it tastes better than it looks.

Congee (Jook)

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup rice
  • 5- 7 cups water (may need more)
  • 1/3 cup raw shelled peanuts
  • 2 preserved duck eggs, chopped
  • 4 scallions, chopped

Preparation:

  1. Place all ingredients in the 3 quart crock pot except for the scallions.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook for at least five to eight hours. It could have a tendency of boiling over. If so, just stick a small fork in between the lid and the pot.
  3. Add additional water if necessary. More water for more soupiness, less for a thicker consistency.
  4. Add scallions as garnish.

You can add anything else you want in there. Chicken, vegetables, shrimp, etc.

Mine came out a little bland but that’s how I like it because I’m not a big fan of using salt. I also added a lot of water. More ingredients in the pot, more water needed.

2011-12-29 22.29.17

It also depends on what you put in there that makes the color. If I didn’t add some of the ingredients, it would have came out white. Keep that in mind. And enjoy. Smile
