Happy Hour with Data Scientists

July 25, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

The Moonshiners Southern Table + Bar | Houston, Texas | Old Fashioned & Lavender Mule

Earlier in the week, Salim invited me to happy hour at The Moonshiners Southern Table + Bar with the data scientists from our old company. I’ve always wanted to try this place and although I didn’t end up getting food, I would love to come back and try. Shown is my Old Fashioned and Salim’s Lavender Mule.

I met new people and also saw people I haven’t seen since we left the company. Although they are all super smart and I get lost in their conversations, it’s nice to hear them talk. The best feeling is understanding certain parts they talk about! I get more motivated to be better with them around.

The Conservatory | Houston, Texas | Pho

Salim, John, Ejie (?) and I decided to get pho from The Conservatory. Much more wonderful conversations before Salim walked me to where my Uber was going to meet me after a homeless man tried to swindle us out of money when we were all outside on the streets talking.

My Uber driver was pretty awesome. She’s a police officer, private investigator, and bodyguard. If you ever met her, you’d never guess. She was also nice enough to watch me walk into the house versus just leaving.

It’s finally the weekend. Two more days of work and then it’s finally a vacation. Hallelujah.

Christopher’s Birthday

April 15, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I was lucky enough to see Jamie today to give her some treats from my vacation for her and the family, as well as some alpaca socks just for Mama. I don’t know if she gave it to them or if she did, let them know it’s from me but if they received it and enjoyed it, that’s all that matters. I know one day I won’t think of buying them things but for now I’m thankful she accepted it.

I knew her a year before I even met Scruffy and she has always been my mentor with my career. I don’t know how long she gets to stay in my life but I hope for a long while because I have no one I’m comfortable with to ask stupid work questions to. I’m thankful she’s willing to still help me with my career if I need it. I hope that he is okay with it because losing her too is just too much all at once.

Christopher's Birthday at Porch Swing Pub with Erin, John, Juhi

Christopher’s birthday was today and Erin, Juhi, John and I celebrated with him at Porch Swing Pub. Old fashioned, Guinness, appetizers, and thirty five cents wing night.

Overcooked 2 with Juhi and Erin

Afterward we went to Erin and John’s place. The boys drank whiskey while the girls played Overcooked 2. They’re not as hardcore so we never could get the fourth star on any.

Game of Thrones Season Premier

Last night I debated if I should watch Game of Thrones. It brings back a lot of memories. Hours on hours spent with Scruffy. He didn’t always want to watch this show but something inside him finally clicked and it became our show. I envisioned that when the new season came out I’d sleep over at his house and we’d watch it together every Sunday night and I’d just go to work from there.

That dream obviously did not pan out. I finally had to tell myself that more than likely he’s watching it with her. Even though it’s tough watching it alone, especially because I miss his commentary, I’m still excited to see who ends up on the throne. It wasn’t the best of episodes but I’m not sure if it’s because I’m watching alone or if it’s because it was just a royally lame episode.

Doctors, Mentors, and Thanks

April 12, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Happy Friday! Or at least I’m trying to keep positive. We have to work from home today since our side of the floor is getting cubicles put in. I’m not really happy about that since going to work usually helps me not think about things too much.

Eczema Shots

Gross picture, I know. But I got shots put into my feet again a couple of days ago. This is my third dermatologist at the same place and his verdict is the same as my first, eczema, while my second said it was psoriasis. Hopefully this shot will heal everything for a year or so if not more. This also means no more shots every other week in my belly for the psoriasis! Yay!

Redragon Gaming Keyboard and Mouse

The new keyboard I got back in February dies really fast that I already changed the battery twice. This third time it just stopped working overall and I was told I can order any keyboard from Staples or Amazon and work will pay for it. I was shocked when they allowed me to get a gaming keyboard and mouse. The rotating rainbow makes me happy. I joked that if I have it set to red, don’t talk to me. And if it was yellow, approach with caution. I still use my rollerball mouse as this one will be for people who come to my cube. I want to take it all home and keep it forever.

High School Book Fair

I signed up to be a mentor for underprivileged Juniors and Seniors in high school who would like to go to college but unsure where to start since they might be first generation to go.

There have been six or so sessions and I’ve only been to two total since I had personal obligations going on for the other sessions. Everyone has been assigned a few kids and I was partnered with Erin to learn the ropes.

On my first time there another student, who’s mentor couldn’t make it, joined our group. A week later I get an email saying that this student personally request that I be her mentor but only if I was okay with it because I was great at it.

I feel a sense of accomplishment since everything in my life has been a horrible mess. She’s a gorgeous Muslim girl who wants to be a nurse. Her grades are amazing, very easy to talk to and I know she’ll go places. She kind of reminds me of Scruffy’s cousin; no, not because of the Muslim aspect but everything else I said and because she has a lot of motivation to do good in the world.

They had a book fair afterward and I got very excited. I took pictures of some of the books I hope to read in the future.

Next Door Bar & Lounge with Christopher

Afterward Christopher and I went to Next Door Bar & Lounge for drinks. We had some snacks and I ordered a steak for myself since I didn’t eat lunch. So much food that I had to pack it home. We talked about life, relationships, and work.

I’m thankful for Chris as well as everyone else who’s been there for me since Scruffy and I stopped talking beginning of January. I’ve been in constant pain and even more when he met up with me on St. Patrick’s day. No matter how many times they’ve listened to me or watched me cry they are still there to help me through the best they can. It’s still a struggle but I’m taking it day by day.

Now the real question: should I order crawfish for lunch since I’m working from home? Hmm …

Steak Night

March 27, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Olive Garden | Erin and Kristen

Today was Safety Day at work. It’s crazy how one year can change the way this day. It’s so much simpler and a one hour meeting checks all the boxes.

Olive Garden | Erin and Kristen | Pasta

By the time we got out, worked on some things, it was time for Erin and I to meet up with Kristen for lunch. We were able to catch up and Kristen even paid to welcome me back. It was nice to get away from the office because since I started it’s been way over time staring at the walls.

Public House | Alcohol

After work Christopher and I parked our cars at Erin’s and we all walked to Public House for their steak night. I guess one thing Scruffy instilled in me was the art of old fashioned. Dry Bar, I think it’s called, is still my favourite place for them though.

Public House | Steak Night Menu

Their menu is pretty large compared to others and I was excited to try everything.

Public House | Steak Night and Lamb

Well, almost everything. Christopher and I both got Ribeyes, Erin the NY strip, and we all shared a half rack of lamb.

By far one of the best meals I’ve had in a while. I asked for medium rare and it was so dang on point. They know how to do it right.

I am thankful for these two individuals. We’ve become a unit and I understand people at work are probably not happy about it but when you work close, you get to know one another so well that it’s inevitable. I do hope we stay friends forever but I know things change. But until that day comes, I’m going to cherish all those moments with them.

Celebrating Rizzo’s Birthday with Floor Seats to the Rockets Game

October 4, 2018 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2018 | Rizzo's 5th Birthday

First things first, Happy birthday, Rizzo! He is my little protector so I got him this security shirt a while back. The muscles make it even funnier. Also, Pet Supplies Plus gave him a free toy for his birthday!

2018 | Rockets vs Pacers Floor Seats

To celebrate his birthday I went to the Rockets game. But not just any Rockets game. I was offered floor seats and I couldn’t pass them up!

Truck Yard | Houston, Texas

Prisila and I started at the Truck Yard for a drink. They have some nice decor here and I’ll definitely want to come back. Jesse stopped by right as we were leaving but he came along with us.

Rodeo Goat | Houston, Texas

We got hungry and knew it was smart to eat now than later at the stadium so we went next door to Rodeo Goat for some burgers and fries and some nice conversation.

2018 | Floor Seats of Rockets vs Pacers Game

Jesse was nice enough to drop us off while he went to park the trukt which we later found his wife had to pick him up due to truck issues. He missed the game. Such bummer. I’m glad he’s okay though.

We had a nice view smack in the middle of the court. I joked that I could smell their sweat and see the definition on their calves and biceps.

2018 | 277/365 | Floor Seats of Rockets vs Pacers Game | Coworkers

[2018] 277/365: Floor Seats at the Rockets

It was a dream sitting so close and brought me back to when I used to play. Those were the days. This group of gal and guys made it even better. Just a whole lot of silliness.

When’s the next one?
