San Antonio Weekend

April 20, 2015 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I’m a week behind but I still want to capture it. Long update from a week or so ago that made me smile from ear to ear. You can just look at the little number of pictures I have embedded.

Friday, April 10th: I met Liliana at her house where we caught up for hours and started planning out our mini Austin trip for when we go to Lake Travis for a wedding. I cannot wait! Liliana then treated me to a dinner which I didn’t know she would do until we got the check. Thank you, Liliana!

Egg rolls, quail eggs, three different types of sushi rolls, and a ceviche type salad. Everything was lovely. I would definitely go back to this place again. Hopefully then they’ll actually have that Love Shot we wanted to try.

During my time with Liliana, Cantu had texted me talking trash about how the Spurs were going to beat up the Rockets.Him contacting me was perfect timing because I was going to mail something to him when it neared his birthday. Before the night ended, we decided that if things work out, we would meet up for a bit the next day. I was really hoping we do since we hadn’t seen each other in 4 years. Crazy how time flies.

Liliana and I head home to find Patricia and Ricardo chilling in front of the telly to which I hung out with them a bit before we all headed to bed.

Saturday, April 11th: Liliana headed home for the Bluebonnet Festival so Patricia and I had our date day. IHOP for breakfast, HEB to buy goodie bag items for some FTKers, then went and watched an early bird showing of Furious 7. I wept like a baby. Ride In Paradise, Paul.

Patricia’s friend sold beauty products and invited a few friends over to see them while I put the goodie bags together. Once the last person from the event left, Patricia and I went off to UTSA for the 2015 FTK Dance Marathon. Midway through Patricia and I grabbed a late lunch at A&W — which I really don’t recommend. The floor was slippery and felt like it hadn’t been cleaned so everything just made my stomach turn.

We went back and stayed til the end to see FTK surpass the previous year in fundraising. So proud of them and thankful I was able to catch up with old friends and advisors. Many tears and laughter.

Since I had dinner plans with some FTK folks, I did a quick meetup with Cantu. I couldn’t stay long so I jumped out of Patricia’s car and stood outside where we did our hugs, gave him his gift, and caught up as fast as we can in the 5 minutes of what felt like 2 seconds. I was sad I couldn’t stay. He opened his gift after we departed and he loved it … or so he says. Which I am happy about. Love when people are happy because of the little things!

We met up with the other FTKers where everyone ordered alcohol and food and I stuck with wings. Which I regret getting because they were so delicious I couldn’t stop until I had a few left. Sigh … It was a grand time. I really do miss seeing these almost every day. Everyone move to Houston, puhlease.

Afterward it was back home to watch telly and fall asleep.

Sunday, April 12th: I drove home promptly after waking up (with the little sleep I had) and pretty much passed out from exhaustion.

Monday, April 13th: I got a text message from Matthew H. I hadn’t spoken or seen him in almost 2 years and catching up with him, seeing he’s doing well and even better than before makes my heart swell up so big! I love hearing from people from my past and how wonderful they are doing.

The fact I got to see Cantu and catch up with Matthew definitely made my month.

Unexpected Fun

September 18, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

Jenny and I rarely get the chance to hang out. Yeah we do study together and maybe watch the occasional One Tree Hill episodes together. But going out and doing dinner and just straight chilling? Rarely.

So to my surprise, Jenny was craving steak and wanted to go out for it. Therefore we decided on Logan’s Steakhouse then drinks afterward at Flying Saucer.

IMG_5380

But since we realized it was Happy Hour at Logan’s we each got a beer. I got BudLight and she got MillerLight (I think). Double fisting both our beers for pictures.

Can I just finally say, I think I’m warming up to my red streak. It really shows up on pictures and in a way makes me feel pretty? Is that weird?

IMG_5381

Our table of yumminess. Jenny and I somehow ordered the exact same thing without knowing.

Our free bread. A mug of beer for each of us. And a plate of rib-eye, sautéed mushrooms, and a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon. I could have done without the butter.

I finished everything but my steak. Jenny finished her steak and beer only. That’s how great this meal is.

IMG_5384

I ordered these little shot-like desserts to share with Jenny. Brownie with ice cream, some kind of Nutter-Butter dessert, and Strawberry Cheesecake.

It was 3 for $5 so we decided to try them all. Oh did I mention you get to keep the buckets? Sahweet!

Jenny and I’s favorite? The Nutter-Butter! Definitely ordering ONLY that flavor next time.

We weren’t ready to go home yet so we decided to go to the Dollar Theater. Sadly, they weren’t selling anymore tickets since it was already 11pm and were already on their last showings.

Which resulted in Jenny texting her friend and asking her if she was still going out drinking.

IMG_5392

Jenny and I met her friend at Sparky’s Pub. It’s a gay bar so Jenny and I were out of place and felt out of place. Her friend as well. She was there for her friend’s birthday who is a lesbian.

We didn’t know what to do so we took pictures.

IMG_5387

Just fyi, that’s Jenny’s beer.

Afterward, I texted my friend to see what he was up to. We headed over to where he was. A place called Rush. It used to be called Posh but they fixed it up and changed its name. It’s the first time I’ve been there since they changed and I must say, it’s for the better.

I got to see people I rarely see and it just felt like everything was right in the world.

I would put up pictures of my friends other than Jenny but I don’t know how they’ll feel about it. Especially because they don’t know about this blog.

We got home around 3am and watched an episode of One Tree Hill. I woke up at 9am and fell back asleep. By the time I woke up again, I realized I was 10 minutes late for football practice with FSA. Whoops. So I hauled ass and had a great 2ish hours of practice.

It was a great night that I had. It was great to just go out and put off studying. Which was a bad idea seeing how I have a test on Tuesday. Eeep!

Wish me luck as I study my ass off!

A Whole Lotta Words

July 1, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

I was the only one in the family that had to work today but work got a little easier when Mum called to let me know we were going to Tokyo One for dinner with June and Dad. Since it wasn’t a thrilling experience last time and the price went up from $25 to $27.99 per person, I debated on going.

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | View

But since I rarely get to see Dad I sucked it up and went. Outside our window was this wonderful view. There were even turtles but I didn’t have the right angle to take a picture of them.

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | Buffet

I actually didn’t eat the crab but took a picture anyway because it was scary huge.

The green tea ice cream was not up to par as last times. Such a disappointment. The other ice cream is red bean ice cream. It tasted more like raspberries.

I really liked our waiter this time around. He came and picked up our plates pretty much every five minutes. We’re fast eaters.

I really don’t think me coming here is such a good deal since I don’t love it like they do but I guess whatever I have to do to spend time with Dad! Plus I didn’t have to pay!!

Tokyo One | Houston, Texas | Bill

Look at that bill!

Late last week, I made plans with Nicole to meet up at Baker Street Pub then found out Brudda was coming into town as well. Since I get a whole week with him, I decided to not cancel on Nicole. We always had a friend with us because we knew some of the same people despite graduating with 1000+ back in 2007 so this is the first time it was one-on-one.

We talked about a lot of personal things. And I feel even closer to her. It feels good to trust someone with things you don’t tell people.

While we were there trying to have a conversation over the loud music, a guy came up to us and asked us if he could buy us a beer. We declined.  I always get awkward when people come up to me and do that, plus we both had to drive home after.

Our waitress kept asking if we needed anything else and we kept saying no. She finally told us the same guy had told her he will pick up the tab to whatever else we ordered. Still creeps me out.

All in all, after a long and tiring week of work, it was good to unwind with Nicole. I’ve missed her so much and it was definitely great to see her again. We’re planning for something next week but it depends on how busy our schedules are.

Good night blog world! 🙂

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas

June 15, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas

The day after my birthday, I had a few friends celebrate with me with dinner at Turquoise Grill and drinks afterwards.

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Olive Oil Dip

Olive Oil & Herb Mixture Dip | free

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Shepherd's Bread

Shepherd’s Bread | free

Not pictured is the Hummus [garbanzo beans pureed with tahini paste, lemon juice, and garlic] | $4.75 which was surely delicious. It was more grainy than smooth but I didn’t mind that. I shared it with everyone at the table so that I had room for the big meal.

Turquoise Grill | Houston, Texas | Adana Kebab Platter

Adana Kebab Platter [world-famous blended mixture of spicy ground beef and ground lamb tucked on a flat shish and grilled to perfection. served with our homemade lavash flat bread, bulgur pilaf and piyaz (Turkish bean salad)] | $10.95

I don’t see the bread on my dish and don’t remember having it so that’s a bummer. But this dish is definitely worth the money. The beef and lamb is very moist and soft and the whole dish is really filling.

The price is pretty high compared to Pasha’s Mediterranean Grill so I think I’d rather stick with Pasha’s, my all time favourite Greek/Mediterranean place.

Little Woodrow's | Houston, Texas | Blue Moon

We went to Little Woodrow’s afterward where Michelle bought me a mug of Blue Moon. Yum! The other mug full is hers. I believe she got XX.

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas

June 14, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

It’s very rare that I find people that speak my native tongue so I was excited when Nancy, Elaine, Henry, and I decided to hangout on May 4th at Yard House. It was happy hour time so everything on their Happy Hour menu was 1/2 off!!

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas | Spicy Tuna Roll

Spicy Tuna Roll [seared rare ahi, avocado, edamame, cucumber with wasabi soy sauce] | ~$6

If you’ve never had their Spicy Tuna Roll, you’re missing out! The name can be misleading because I bet you’d imagine it was wrapped in seaweed. They’d be better off calling it a Spicy Tuna Tower with the way they stack it. I’m drooling just thinking about it!

Yard House | San Antonio, Texas | Classic Sliders

Classic Sliders | ~ $5

I always heard sliders are extra fattening (delicious) than a regular burgers but I didn’t care since we were nearing the end of the school year. It was surprising that I as a fry lover wasn’t a big fan of them but as a bread hater I really liked the buns.

If they served the sliders with a side of spicy tuna roll, I think I’d be most happy. As happy as being able to spend time with lovely people.
