Happy Hour with Data Scientists

July 25, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

The Moonshiners Southern Table + Bar | Houston, Texas | Old Fashioned & Lavender Mule

Earlier in the week, Salim invited me to happy hour at The Moonshiners Southern Table + Bar with the data scientists from our old company. I’ve always wanted to try this place and although I didn’t end up getting food, I would love to come back and try. Shown is my Old Fashioned and Salim’s Lavender Mule.

I met new people and also saw people I haven’t seen since we left the company. Although they are all super smart and I get lost in their conversations, it’s nice to hear them talk. The best feeling is understanding certain parts they talk about! I get more motivated to be better with them around.

The Conservatory | Houston, Texas | Pho

Salim, John, Ejie (?) and I decided to get pho from The Conservatory. Much more wonderful conversations before Salim walked me to where my Uber was going to meet me after a homeless man tried to swindle us out of money when we were all outside on the streets talking.

My Uber driver was pretty awesome. She’s a police officer, private investigator, and bodyguard. If you ever met her, you’d never guess. She was also nice enough to watch me walk into the house versus just leaving.

It’s finally the weekend. Two more days of work and then it’s finally a vacation. Hallelujah.

The General Public | Houston, Texas

July 13, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I had a good few hours of sleep in before getting pawed by Rizzo to go out. After relaxing for a bit Timothy came to pick me and June up to go to The Escape Game Houston, Playground edition meeting up with Sissy, BIL, Gordon, and Patsy.

The Escape Game | Houston, Texas | Playground

Thanks to The Houston Bloggers Union, it was all free! And we had a great time! The object of the game was to go through and solve puzzles pretaining to our report card. We were slow to start but ended up getting through everything with only 54 seconds to spare! We were cutting it close!! All A+’s!! I’ve never had all As on my report card! Haha

The General Public | Houston, Texas | Shrimp and Grits and Potato Au Gratin

Afterward we all headed across the street to the General Public. This has been on my list to try since they opened and I was thrilled to have good company with me.

Shrimp and Grits with a sunny side up egg. The grits are made out of cauliflower and although it did have a different texture, I feel better knowing it’s a tad healthier than if they were grits.

The side of Potato Au Gratin was okay. Not anything go hit home about. I wished the green chili came through more.

I did get to try some fries and it was perfect fried and seasoned! I’d come back for that!

Fish by John

We all went out separate ways and I laid in bed with Rizzo for about a good thirty minutes before heading out to Mallory’s. John was having Trey and Robby over for dinner so Mallory asked if I wanted to join. We had fish cooked by John and everything else by Mallory. Yum!

JJ and the Telly

After dinner we all sat in the living room and watched telly. JJ kept attacking Trey and I and although it was tiring since I haven’t been getting much sleep, I had fun. There were times where he would sit peacefully and watch telly and I loved when he say in my lap. Makes me miss Emmy. After JJ went to bed, we played Mario Kart and watched more telly before calling it a night.

Gus’s World Fried Chicken | Houston, Texas

July 12, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Jumped on an early morning call with the prototyping team. I love seeing it come together and I really hope it gets signed off by the high ups. But if not, we can always build our own through the local team.

I spent four hours after that with Dad at his doctor appointments. It was mostly a lot of waiting but I was able to get in a twenty five minute nap afterwards since I only had two hours of sleep.

La Madeline with Joel

I drove and picked up Joel for lunch at La Madeline, more of a snack for me but I got kind of full. He was sweet in buying me a fruit tart since I got coffee last time. My little intern is all grown up!

Gus's World Fried Chicken | Houston, Texas | Salim

After a while of catching up with Joel, I dropped him off at his work and went and picked up Salim from his work for a super late lunch at Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken, his favourite fried chicken place. (That’s only because he’s never been to Jollibee or Bawls!)

Dark thighs are always my favourite and it was pretty darn good. I wished it was spicier but other than that, it’s a pretty good southern fried chicken. We thought their greens would be green beans but if was collard greens. I was a bit disappointed but they started growing on me as I ate them.

Gus's World Fried Chicken | Houston, Texas | Sweet Potato Pie

He also said they had good pies, at least the ones he has tried. He’s never had sweet potato pie here so we decided to be “healthy”. He says this was the worst pie he’s gotten here. I agree. It wasn’t that great. If I ever come back I’ll try one of the chess pies he likes.

I’ve been wanting to try this place and glad I finally got to cross it off my list! Where’s my next new foodventure?

Houston Cousins Day

July 6, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Started off the day watching the first Avenger movie before Timothy came to pick me up to go to Grandma’s. Sissy, BIL, Sarah, and Jacky died up as well. We picked up some Vietnamese food as well and chowed down with them and talked a bit before heading back home.

Game Night at Sarah & Jacky's

Soon enough I was out the door again picking up Timothy for game night at Sarah and Jacky’s with Sissy and BIL. Family Guy Clue and some Escape Curse if the Temple. Everyone was pretty competitive but was fun overall.

Canyon Creek Cafe | Houston, Texas
Old Fashioned, Moscow Mule, Texas Wang’s Sweet and Spicy, Chicken Fried Steak, Frijoles Burger, Barbacoa Hash

Then we headed to dinner at Canyon Creek Cafe. The best out of it all is the Barbacoa Hash. I really want to order one to go so I have it for tomorrow or something. It was THAT good.

We are currently chilling and will either call it a night or play more games. I’m sleepy and rest to relax with some Marvel movies.

The Classic | Houston, Texas

June 14, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I had to force myself out of bed today. It was nice just laying there with Rizzo without any plans after a hectic two weeks at work. I was able to check off some items that’s been sitting on my to-do list, one having to do with my 401k from my other company that is now being transferred to my current employer account.

Cocohodo | Katy, Texas

I wanted to get out of the house to work on a case study competition I signed up for and ended up at Cocohodo. But once I signed on to my work laptop, I got lost in my emails and started working. Five hours later, I got a lot done, but not my case study. Whoops.

I went home, packed my bags and headed to Sissy’s for a sister night. We shopped at Target and PetsMart before heading to dinner at The Classic.

The Classic | Houston, Texas | Cauliflower & Shishito Peppers
Cauliflower & Shishito Peppers [date dashi, curry salt, mint, peanuts] | $8
The Classic | Houston, Texas | Crispy Brussels Sprouts
Crispy Brussels Sprouts [honey-balsamic, toasted hazelnuts, gruyere] | $8

We ordered some appetizers, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts. Both were equally delicious. Sissy wasn’t a big fan of the Brussels sprouts because of the coldness of the slaw and hotness of the Brussels.

The Classic | Houston, Texas | Rum Old Fashioned

The Classic | Houston, Texas | Pretty In Pink
Pretty In Pink

We felt fancy with our drinks. We decided on sitting outside since the weather was so nice. They had a gorgeous wall of real plants outside which one of my friend said it looked as if I was at a gardening store. Maybe that’ll be a cool business. Serve alcohol while people shop for gardening stuff.

The Classic | Houston, Texas | Lemongrass Salad
Lemongrass Salad [grilled San San tofu, peanuts, herbs, black rice, avocado, lemongrass vinaigrette] | $14

Their lemongrass vinaigrette gave it a very refreshing taste for the salad. I was pleasantly surprised since salads are usually the same old same old. I would come back for this salad. Note to self: learn to make lemongrass vinaigrette.

The Classic | Houston, Texas | Butcher's Cut
Butcher’s Cut [with potatoes, asparagus, topped with Hollandaise sauce] | $25

I wouldn’t say this is the BEST thing I’ve ever eaten though it wasn’t bad. I would choose the Lemongrass Salad over this.

We were stuffed, and headed back to Sissy’s. We’re currently watching Bad Moms while researching for my case study. Night world!
