Capture That Dream

August 11, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

If you follow me on Twitter, you can hear me talk about FTK (For The Kids) a lot. It’s an organization that helps promote pediatric cancer and collect donations in hopes of finding a cure, all by throwing events throughout the year.

I’ve been coming up with logo ideas for this year’s theme as well as others in the organization. Our theme this year is “Capture That Dream.”

I don’t really share my ideas with people I know but I felt pretty confident to share them with y’all. They are just very rough sketches I made in a few minutes.

Capture That Dream | Nets Logo Rough Sketch

Kids frolicking in the meadow catching butterflies. Bright and happy. There is a cloud in the back because dreams.

Capture That Dream | Cloud 9 Logo Rough Sketch

I think this one is quite hideous but these are kids on the cloud grabbing a star or stars if you want. I’m not that big of a fan of this but it was just an idea.

Capture That Dream | Dreamcatcher Logo Rough Sketch

This is my fave. It most likely won’t be our logo but I am hoping they will want to use this for the words portion of it. A “C” in the-the form of a dream catcher.

It’s a long shot they will use any of this but it was pretty fun.

I’ll be putting up the recipes of the desserts I made and what I thought about them in the future post. Keep a look out! 🙂

Farewell To Old Friends …

August 10, 2011 by Mellie Dee 2 Comments

Let’s raise a glass to the bitter end
Farewell to old friends
Will you be the same when we see you again

-Dixie Chicks, Bitter End

I had last Friday off so Sissy and I spent some time together. We went to eat at Cheddar’s before heading to Walmart to buy some things.

Sissy | Cartwheels

Sissy

Then we came home and she wanted a new profile picture for her Facebook so we took a bunch. I’m well aware our family lives in like the freaking jungle. So many plants that you can’t even see in our backyard.

Black Tire | Guinness & Flat Tire

My first Black Tire (Guinness and Flat Tire)

Then I went out to celebrate Nicole getting her first job ever!! A teaching job right here in Katy! So proud of her. Nicole, Michelle, Rachael, and I met at Otis (?) first because Rachael was hungry. Then Nicole, Michelle, and I headed to Baker’s Street.

We talked about a lot of things which will leave me scarred for a little while. I can’t share the details because they’re all personal but … let’s just say I’m educated. If you can guess what we talked about I’ll give you a cookie.

****************

Today was my farewell party. One summer has passed and it was time to move on to my last year of college.

My team here do it B-I-G. An invite to everyone on the team or anyone I might know to come to my party. Cake, gift giving, and speeches.

Farewell Cake

They made me take home the remainder of the chocolate and vanilla marble cake. The flowers look blue but it was actually purple. Preeety! There were two more flowers at the bottom but two of the men boys swiped them because they love frosting. Weirdos. It’s kinda cute.

Farewell Gifts

Cute little gift bag. $25 gift card and Twix bar. Cute little card. Signatures. I felt very loved. So dang shy and kept saying “Thank you.”

I am very blessed to have worked with them for 5 summers and one winter. It has been a great experience.

Then I ran home and had my phone conference with FTK. I am so excited for this year. It is going to be A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

To give thanks to the co-workers, I went to H-E-B to buy some ingredients. I just finished making two desserts to bring tomorrow. I’ll share with you the recipes soon!

Going off to blog read and Prison Break.

One day of work left then my one week of summer starts.

Trader Joe’s in Texas?!

August 5, 2011 by Mellie Dee 6 Comments

Yes. You read that correctly.

Sissy overheard a man that works at Kroger, here in Houston, that a Trader Joe’s will be popping up soon.

The first one is said to be in Dallas. Then building in Houston and Austin as well. So those of you who moved from places that have Trader Joe’s and landed here in one of those cities, you’re in luck!

Here’s an article for you to read if you’re skeptical about it.

I will finally get to see what they hype is all about!

I wish they build one in San Antonio. Guess if I like Trader Joe’s that much, I’ll make the drive to Austin for it.

**************

I tried some Whey Protein today. It was pretty yummy but I don’t know if I would need it. Maybe once I’m in San Antonio where I don’t eat that much meat.

How does one know how much protein to take?!

**************

If you follow my twitter account you would know this.

I won my first giveaway!!! Thanks to Team Giles and Flatout Bread!

It comes with so much stuff and I’m very excited to try it all out! Eeep!

**************

It’s been a really good Friday so far. Got to hang out with Sissy and winning the giveaway.

But the day isn’t over. I get to see some of my best girls tonight! Whoo!!

Survey #2

August 3, 2011 by Mellie Dee 6 Comments

Since I don’t have much to say lately, I thought to do this survey so you guys can get to know me a little better.

Three ways I am still a kid:

1. The littlest things make me happy.
2. I stay up til the wee hours of the night.
3. I grew up with no cable so whenever I’m up in college (free cable), I watch Disney and Nickelodeon like crazy!

Three ways I am already old:

1. I have injuries that come and haunt me at certain times.
2. I’m a homebody.
3. I’m not one to party hardy. Never really did.

Three things I want to do:

1. Find a good job once I graduate college.
2. Keep in touch with friends so I’m not ever lonely.
3. Own a Canon DSLR. (Plus anything else in my Bucket List.)

Three ways I’m a stereotypical “boy”:

1. I’m aggressive and competitive.
2. I’m not a big fan of shopping.
3. I love to play and watch sports.

Three ways I’m a stereotypical “girl”:

1. I love makeup and buy a lot of it (but rarely wear it out).
2. I complain about the way I look.
3. I get all happy seeing babies and cute animals.

Three things I want to try within the next three months:

1. Go to Whole Foods without parentals and buy what I want! haha
2. Throw a little (4-5 people) get together at my new apartment.
3. Join a gym (if I find one I really like).

Three things I like about myself:

1. My ability to be there for everyone no matter how long we’ve stopped talking.
2. Open minded .. listen to both sides of arguments and help them see the other person’s side.
3. How I can fit everything in my busy schedule.

Three of my everyday essentials:
1. Water.
2. Laughter.
3. Internet.

Three things that scare me:
1. Failure.
2. Killers.
3. Being alone.

Inaugural 2011 Houston Beer Fest

August 1, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2011 Houston Beer Fest

I was looking through my pictures on my camera and realized … I never wrote about my beer fest experience! So here I am more than a month later, writing it.

I’ve been wanting to go to a beer fest since I’ve heard about it and when Houston was going to have one I begged Sissy, Mum, and June to go but everyone ignored me.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Crowd

It wasn’t until Groupon had a deal. Thank you, Groupon. Only Sissy, Mum, and I ended up going though. But many people were in the Groupon line. Oy vey.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Crowd 2

It was set at Hermann Square Park – worst place to have a beer fest with the amount of people around. There was not enough standing space and it was freaking hot out. People started standing in the pond and the security kept trying to get them out. They started to give up trying to get them out though.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | New Belgium

Each of our tickets came with 10 free drinking stubs which was pretty sweet. For my first tasting, I got an amazing New Belgium Fat Tire. Sadly, our first tasting was also our last.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | New Belgium Fat Tire

By the time we made our way around to the other booths .. all the beer were out. All that was left were the usual beers that you drink when you don’t want to buy anything expensive. It was a waste of money because experiencing a beer fest is to try stuff you never would. Sigh …

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Samosas

We ended up just pigging out on samosas, Asian food, pineapple drink, funnel cake, sausage on a stick, curly fries, and sweet tea.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Asian Food

We paid for all our food except for the teas which was paid for by tickets. We gave the rest of our tickets to some stranger that just came in. I hope he had more fun than us.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Pineapple Drink

I understand this is their first ever Beer Fest here in Houston so I’m not mad at how it turned out. I just wished they thought this through more. They have to know that Houston goes crazy wild with drinking. Especially when you put it on Groupon or Living Social or any other site to help promote your event … you’re going to be getting A LOT of customers.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Funnel Cake, Sausage on a Stick, Curly Fries

I hope next year it’ll be better. But now I can cross it off my Bucket List! and tell everyone I’ve been to an inaugural beer fest.Winking smile

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Sweet Leaf Peach Ice Tea

I probably won’t go to one for a really long time here in Houston … maybe a few years when they know for sure how things go.

2011 Houston Beer Fest | Sweet Tea

I know they’ll be having a wine fest though so … if you guys are interested, go check it out. It’s in September I believe and they should know how things go now.
