Alamo Drafthouse Cinema | San Antonio, Texas

November 21, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

This weekend has been the most amazing one this whole semester.

I got to spend it with some amazing people.

I’ve already covered Friday night but I found a picture in my phone so you’ll just have to suck it up and hear it again!

Friday:

2011-11-18 20.20.27

After working hard on a partnership packet, a group of us went and ate at Cheddar’s. Gary, Ryan, Patricia, Katrina, Andy, Preston, and I all squeezed into a booth. Drinking was in order. Ryan and Patricia ordered margaritas while I chose the oh so wonderful Fat Tire. The others were underage.

Our waiter was DUMB. He didn’t know what a Fat Tire was and when we said separate checks, he said “Huh? What do you mean?” Really now?

Saturday:

Jenny, Tammy, and I went to the mall. Tammy needed to buy a birthday present for my brother so we shopped around. Then afterward we shopped around for ourselves. Winking smile

I got cute little fingerless mittens that can change to where my fingers are covered at Forever21 for $6.

I even got a nice looking jacket at Macy’s for $25! What a deal!! It’s a nice jacket that I can wear with my nice clothes. Much needed since I own a lot of hoodies.

I had gotten a text from my high school friend, Nicole, that she and her boyfriend were going to be in town. So we planned to get dinner with Stephanie (another high school friend who has been interning here in San Antonio).

We went to Taqueria Data Point. We talked and chilled. It was great. That was the first time I’ve met her boyfriend, and he was amazing!! He could definitely hold a conversation.

The only thing missing was Michelle. She’s coming home from New York this upcoming Sunday!! Finally, we’ll be in the same state again!

Jenny and Tammy wanted to watch Breaking Dawn so we had agreed to meet back at the apartments at 9pm. Then we headed to:

2011-11-19 21.40.00

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema
1255 SW Loop 410
San Antonio, TX
(210) 677-8500
www.drafthouse.com

2011-11-19 21.44.052011-11-19 22.22.30

Our tickets. We are nerds. And we sat all the way at the top … that’s the view I saw. That’s not really the movie on the screen. Before they movie, they played all the spoofs. It’s hilarious!

2011-11-19 22.17.38

There was a lot of things on the menu. Definitely not your usual candies, sodas, popcorn, and nachos at the regular movie theaters.

After you figure out what you want, you write it down and stick it on the metal rail in front of you so it looks like a “flag”.

2011-11-19 22.37.21

Toasted Orzo [olive oil toasted Orzo pasta tossed in red vinegar, parsley, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, and green onions] | $2.99

This was actually A LOT of food. The dude said it came In a small bowl. I beg to differ. I ate some and gave the rest to Jenny.

This was dang delicious and for such a low price. (It was a side.) The only thing I’m confused with is, it says it’s pasta … but I got rice. Unless Orzo means rice. Oh and the dish is cold. Like a salad!

I would order this again when I go because it’s cheap and delicious.

2011-11-19 22.37.48

Guinness Milkshake [Guinness and vanilla ice cream] | $5.00

OMG … I love it. I wished they would of told me that it had whipped cream because I would of told them NO THANKS! It was very delicious though. I would love to go and just order this. So delectable. So smooth.

2011-11-19 22.49.15

“Royale With Cheese” Burger [100% hormone and antibiotic free Angus patty with lettuce, tomato, onions, Cheddar cheese, bacon and chipotle mayo on a toasted sweet bun] | $9.99

The burger was very juicy. Cooked perfectly. The fries had a special type of seasoning so my ketchup as very unnecessary. The fries were a bit on the hard side. Not crunchy … hard. Yep.

I don’t think I would order the burger again though. It was good but not GREAT.

The theater itself … there are little lights underneath the long table where you sit. Luckily the ones under Jenny and I were out so it wasn’t super bright. The people came at the WORST times possible. But it was still a great experience.

The movie itself … was great! I’m not a die-hard Twilight fan but I love when people will do anything to protect those they love. Go watch it. It’s not terrible!

Sunday:

It was supposed to be study day but Jenny, Tammy, and I were lazy and were on Pinterest laughing away. When they went to H-E-B, I started my laundry, showered, and printed out all my slides. Productive?

2011-11-20 15.59.08

A bee flew into our humble abode. Sad smile They were scared. I wasn’t scared … as long as it wasn’t close to me. He was pretty dumb. He kept flying into the window and couldn’t get out. Took him about a good hour. I tried to help but you could hear he was getting angry.

After dinner, we watched Water For Elephants. Such a good movie. Robert Pattinson isn’t as terrible as everyone thinks. I find him attractive. Winking smile

This weekend was filled with fun and I cannot wait for this upcoming Thanksgiving break. I get to see my whole family as well as Tammy and Jenny’s family. It’s going to be amazing!!

Kim Wah Chinese BBQ | San Antonio, Texas

November 14, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

On Saturday Jenny and I went to

2011-11-12 13.07.53

Kim Wah Chinese BBQ
7080 Bandera Road
San Antonio, TX
(210) 520-2200
www.kimwah.com

I’ve heard this is the best authentic Chinese food in town and since Jenny and I were craving home, we thought, why not give it a try.

2011-11-12 13.31.58

Preserved Egg with Pork Congee | $6.95

Oh my gosh. I’ve been craving Congee for the longest time. Every time I go home I beg my mum to make it. Of course Kim Wah can’t make it like her, but it was still delicious nonetheless. It makes me miss home so much. My mum uses a different type of pork where it pulled. This was more like little chunks of pork.

2011-11-12 13.36.48

Pan Fried Noodle with Beef and Vegetables | $9.95

Again, tastes like home. But not the best I’ve ever had. That’s all I can really say about this dish.

I made another meal out of this because it was so much food.

Sadly, these prices are very expensive. But I guess anything compared to Houston won’t be as great since Houston is cheaper and tastes better.

This is the best Chinese food I’ve eaten here in San Antonio. Authentic.

Yummmm!

Taqueria Data Point | San Antonio, Texas

November 14, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

On Friday night, Katrina and I went to

2011-11-11 19.01.04

Taqueria Data Point
4063 Medical Dr.
San Antonio, TX 78229
(210) 615-3644

As you can see in that picture, they open until very late. They actually just expanded because there were so many customers coming in and their place was so dinky small.

I remember going here my freshman year but then never being able to find it until recently.

2011-11-11 19.00.49

Chips & Salsa | free

Right when you sit down, the put it down on your table. Beware though. The salsa is muy caliente! (Is that the same word for spicy?) Their chips are very, very crispy and delicious.

2011-11-11 19.15.52

Barbacoa To-Go [with 8 tortillas] | $9.99/lb

Pico de Gallo | $1.00

You get to chose if you want flour or corn tortillas. I went for the corn. If you’ve ever had barbacoa, and tried Data Point, you will know they have the best. It is very juicy and succulent. I had so much leftover as well.

It was so delicious, I went with Tammy and Jenny last night. They LOVE it and had a lot of leftovers as well.

Come here if you’re ever in San Antonio.

Though it looks very run down, it’s the best I’ve had in San Antonio. Their service is not very amazing because I always have to raise my hand to get a refill of anything.

Plus this time I ordered corn tortillas as usual and they ran out and only gave me three and hid flour tortillas underneath and didn’t even tell me. That = bad service. I actually forgot to give a tip as well … whoops.

Thai Topaz | San Antonio, Texas

A few weeks ago, Jenny and I went to

Thai Topaz
9386 Huebner Road, Ste 101
San Antonio, TX
(210) 690-6000
www.thaitopaz-sat.com

Pad Thai [stir-fried rice noodles, eggs and bean sprouts in special sauce topped with peanuts, bean sprouts and cilantro] | $8.75

Depending on if you want tofu, chicken, beef, shrimp, the prices vary.

I got the chicken for $8.75. It has been voted “best” pad-thai in San Antonio. In my opinion though it’s very delicious, I don’t find it the best if compared to a Thai place in Houston.

But a few days later a Groupon showed up for Thai Topaz. $8 for $16 worth of food.

I so totally bought it!

Then Tammy came down so we used it and I got tofu instead of chicken and loved it. I guess it was an off day for me the first time.

Overall, great place. The lady there is nice. If you’re not in a rush, this is a great place for Thai food.

You can also call in and order and then go and pick it up. Winking smile

Trudy’s and Amy’s Ice Cream | Austin, Texas

November 13, 2011 by Mellie Dee 4 Comments

During Halloween weekend, we had some adventures.

Me, Jenny, Tammy, Brian, Richard, Susan, Peter, Michelle, Wilson P., Long, and Steven all went to:

2011-10-30 15.01.09

Trudy’s
409 West 30th Street
Austin, TX
(512) 477-2935
www.trudys.com

We had to split up with seating so I sat with Peter, Susan, and Michelle.

2011-10-30 15.01.28

It comes with free chips and two different salsa dips. We had already eaten halfway until I realized I had to take a picture. Whoops!

Us four ate at least four times this if not more. It was that good!

2011-10-30 15.30.052011-10-30 15.30.23

Beef Fajita Ala Mexicana [tender beef fajita meat marinated in a soy-ginger spice blend and sautéed with onions, cilantro, jalapenos, tomatoes and lime juice. Garnished with a small salad and sliced avocado. Served with Spanish rice, borracho beans and a choice of tortillas] | $12.50

I got a choice of corn tortillas. Omgosh … I about died. The meat was so juicy and succulent. I was very full. I wasn’t even halfway full. (Maybe it was the chips?) But I made sure to finish ALL the meat. Because it would be a waste if I didn’t.

******************

After we ate, Wilson P., Michelle, Steven, and I were heading back to the apartment and stopped by

2011-10-30 16.48.29

Amy’s Ice Creams
1012 West 6th Street
Austin, TX
(512) 480-0673

2011-10-30 16.56.44

Irish Crème with a waffle cone and sprinkles | ~$5

I’ve never had ice cream with alcohol before so it was a good experience. I couldn’t taste the alcohol but Wilson P. and Michelle thinks it’s filled with it. Hmm …

This was what sparked my ice cream with sprinkles addiction with the last post I made. It was that good. Sadly Amy’s is the best ice cream place I’ve ever been.
