Lasik Consultation + Gaining a Few Pounds

October 12, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Joffe Medicenter | Lasik Consultation

I took the plunge and went to my Lasik consultation this morning. I put in the max amount in my flexible spending account to force myself to get this procedure done before the year was over since you lose what you don’t spend.

I chose Joffe Medicenter because my coworker’s mentor went there with his wife a couple of years ago. And plus they had 5 star ratings on Google and Yelp so I assume it has to be pretty darn good.

My consultation went well and I passed all the tests. My procedure will be done next week. I’m scared but excited. It would suck if it failed in the end but I guess I’ll never know until I try. Wish me luck!

Pokeworks | Houston, Texas | Foodie Tasting

Tan invited me to a Foodie event at Pokeworks and I got to play around with the props along with the food we ordered. I was told I’m good at that which made me happy and sometimes makes me wonder if I’m in the wrong line of work.

Pokeworks | Houston, Texas | Foodie Tasting Simple

I like simpler pictures though and these made me happy enough. It’s currently soft opening but their grand opening, on October 19, 2019, will have the BOGO deal along with a chance to win an Apple Watch!

8550 South Main Street, Houston, Texas 77025

Flower & Cream Artisan Ice Cream | Houston, Texas

We then went and got dessert at Flower & Cream. I opted for Unicorn Tracks that tastes like Lucky Charms cereal, Caramel Apple Pie with real bits of apples in a Salted Blue Corn waffle cone. Everything was delicious though I would stick with just the Unicorn Tracks next time. I loved it more than I thought I would!

The Path of Tea | Houston, Texas

He suggested we go to The Path of Tea. I’ve been wanting to go here since forever and was happy I finally made it! So many different teas to chose from! I chose the Relaxation Blend. It had a bit of mint in it but it made me so relaxed I started getting sleepy … or maybe my food coma was kicking in. I ended up getting some to go for nights where I can’t unwind (every night).

I am stuffed. It’s crazy how Tan and I lost contact due to going to different colleges and from one response on Instagram we had our reunion and our life is just talks on relationships with guys and food. He says he’ll invite me to more events in the future so fingers crossed!

Smoosh | Katy, Texas

Mentoring A Third Grader | Sorry

Today I got to see my 3rd grader again. Not really sure why it’s called mentoring since I’m not really teaching her anything other than spending time with her. If anything I just call it volunteering. Regardless we had a good time with other second graders and their mentors walking around the school, coloring pages and playing Sorry all while they ate.

Fried Rice by Mallory | JJ

Work has been so busy that I didn’t have time to eat so I was lucky to be served fried rice when I arrived at Mallory’s. JJ had a big fit when we decided to leave the house he didn’t want Mallory to leave and for the first time he didn’t want me to leave. Usually he’ll kick and scream saying that I should go and mommy should stay.

Smoosh | Katy, Texas | Mallory

We have plans to go somewhere in La Centerra for dessert but ended up at Smoosh. I love their bright blue wall. Mallory decided on vanilla ice cream sandwich with two different types of cookies with rainbow sprinkles. I opted for the churros and ube ice cream topped with rainbow sprinkles and mini M&M’s. Everything tasted pretty great except for the bummer of a stale churros. I still prefer Somi Somi then here though.

Hurts Donut Company | Katy, Texas

We went across the street to Hurts Donuts Company. I’ve been meaning to go here but never ventured out. I don’t think I have been missing out though because right when I walked in the sweetness punched me in the face. We didn’t end up getting … other than diabetes from the sweet, sugary air.

HMart | Katy, Texas | Male Enhancement Pills

We stopped by Mallory’s parents house for a quick hello before heading off to HMart so that she could by some necessities. We ended up finding male enhancement pills in the home aisle and can’t help but laugh when a man kept hovering around the same aisle.

I’m going to be sad when I move further away since it’s already a little tough to get together now. She said we’ll figure it out when the time comes and we’ll make it work and I laughed because she made it sound as if we were a couple doing long distance relationship.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Part 1

August 31, 2019 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Whataburger Breakfast

We left the house so early in the morning and got Whataburger for breakfast. Emmy are some of my chicken strips, fries, and toast before her nap.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Popeye's Lunch

By the time we got to Dallas Brudda left to get lunch for Emmy, the parents and June. Lots of Popeye’s Chicken but no chicken sandwich. Bummer.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Marufuku Ramen | Frisco, Texas | Geso Fry, Marufuku Bites, Hakata Tonkotsu DX
Geso Fry [fried squid legs] | $6.25 • Marufuku Bites [Japanese steamed buns filled with homemade pork Chashu, 2 pcs] | $6.25 • Hakata Tonkotsu DX [Hakata Style Ramen with Rich Pork Broth with Chashu pork (simmered pork belly), seasoned soft boiled egg, green onions, kikurage mushrooms, bean sprouts, buta kakumi (braised thick pork belly), corn, nori seaweed and sesame seeds | $14.95

Michael dropped Rosanna off and we all hung out a bit before SIL, Sammi, Rosanna and I, went off to meet up with Jenny at Marufuku Ramen for lunch. Lots of catching up while we stuffed our faces.

Sammi and I decided to share since we were super hungry. My favourite is the squid legs. The Chashu from the buns was a bit dry so not worth it. The ramen was good though we asked for ultra spicy and we didn’t feel the heat. But they don’t skimp on the noodles like other ramen places.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Somi Somi | Frisco, Texas | Ube and Matcha

In the same area was Somi Somi which I got a shot of SIL’s ube and matcha swirl soft serve.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | T-Swirl Crepe | Frisco, Texas | Matcha Azuki Bean
Matcha Azuki Bean [sliced strawberries, red bean, matcha custard cream, whipped yogurt, matcha ice cream gelato, almonds, chocolate Pocky sticks] | $8.99

While they all enjoyed their ice creams we walked next door so that I could get a crepe. I couldn’t finish it even with bare minimum help. Their crepe was crispy yet fluffy. Much better than Eight Turn Crepe.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Diaso | Frisco, Texas | Sammi & Mellie Dee

After our desserts we went next door to Diaso to check out random things. Sammi wanted us to wear masks so she could take a picture. My eyes look so creepy!

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Jenny, Mellie Dee, Rosanna, Tammy, Sammi

We had a photoshoot outside and I’m happy about how they came out. I also got a Save the Date from Rosanna. Cannot wait to watch her walk down the aisle next year!

We bid our farewells with Jenny, then dropped Rosanna off before we headed to Queens Beauty supply store near SIL’s home.

By the time we got their everyone else was dressed for the pool. We were going to go as well but with the time the pool was closing for cleaning, the rest of us decided to stay behind and hang out in the media room.

2019 Labour Day Weekend | Meso Maya | Plano, Texas | Margaritas (Mango Sangrita, Serrano Berry, Remolino Swirl, Cucumber), Queso Blanco, Carne Asada, Elote con Crema, Charred Brussel Sprouts
Margaritas (Mango Sangrita [fresh housemade mango sangrita with frozen house margarita & tajin salted rim] | $9 • Serrano Berry [fresh muddled strawberry & Serrano pepper, triple Sec, ambhar tequila Blanco, fresh lime juice] | $10 • Remolino Swirl [homemade sangria swirled with frozen house margarita] | $8 •Cucumber [freshly squeezed cucumber & lime juices, simple syrup, triple Sec casamigos tequila Blanco] | $9) • Queso Blanco [ chihuahua, Monterey jack and muenster cheese, housemade white corn tortillas, signature queso poblano] | $12 • Carne Asada [wood-fire marinated steak, homemade sweet corn tamal, crema Mexicans, queso fresco, black bean & cheese tostada, creamy Serrano salsa] | $21• Elote con Crema | $5 • Charred Brussel Sprouts | $5

After they got done at the pool, showers and naps later, we headed to Meso Maya to celebrate June’s birthday with the whole family. Everything was delicious and came out perfect. The only thing I was sad about was being too full so fast!

We came home and all hung out in the media room again before we all retreated back to our rooms. Tomorrow is a new day. Less crazy but hopefully just as eventful.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas

Nail Bar | Katy, Texas

Mum, June and I had a girls day out. We started off with pedicures and mimosas. I added a manicure to take off what I had on my nails already but I didn’t do a polish. Giving them breathing time and in turn saves money.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas

We decided to check out another place at Katy Asia Town, Phat Eatery, for lunch. I saw this on Houston Restaurant Week for dinner and was so surprised that they served the menu all day for a $35 four course meal. I opted for that while they both ordered an entree and we just shared everything.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | Roti with Chicken
Roti with Chicken [Indian flat bread with boneless curry chicken dip]

Part of the HRW menu. Their roti was super flaky yet chewy and soft inside. It paired well with the one giant piece of chicken we got.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | Salt & Pepper Calamari
Salt & Pepper Calamari [13 spices, green and red bell, onion, chili]

Part of the HRW menu. Easily one of our favourite things here. I rarely care for any calamari but this one was seasoned wonderfully and any one that knows me knows that adding vegetables to any dish makes it better.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | Beef Rendang
Beef Rendang [beef banana shank, coconut curry, potato]

Part of the HRW menu. The flavour was great but the beef chunks is too much. I could do with smaller chunks and more potatoes. It was also weird that there was no roti or rice to go with it. Luckily June’s dish came with a lot of rice. This won’t ever be ordered again because of it.

Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | Hainanese Chicken-Half
Hainanese Chicken-Half [served with pandang fragrant rice, all natural ABF chicken, poached to perfection, and sauce flight trio] | $17

The chicken and rice isn’t as flavourful or as fragrant as what we are used to this dish to be but the chicken was very silky. They just need to marinate it a little longer for the flavour to be perfect for both the chicken and the rice.

Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | "CK Teow" Char Kway Teow
“CK Teow” Char Kway Teow [flat noodle, shrimp, calamari, Siricha, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, egg, chives] | $13

This was our favourite entree. They gave us a side dish of fragrant shrimp paste type sauce to mix in. The only thing I didn’t like was how little seafood they put inside but other than that it was perfect.

2019 Houston Restaurant Week | Phat Eatery | Katy, Texas | Kaya Pancake
Kaya Pancake [Indian flat bread, pandan infused condensed milk]

Part of HRW menu. I love pandan. It autocorrected to pandas. I love those too. Anyway, I loved this. Not super sweet and wouldn’t mind having this again if I craved something sweet.

I know what you’re thinking. So many carbs in one meal, right? Because I agree. But that’s how Asians roll. I would come back for more roti. Anyone want to teach me how to make them?

Somi Somi | Katy, Texas | Sesame and Milk Soft Serve with Custard Taiyaki
Sesame and Milk Soft Serve with Fruity Pebbles and Crushed Oreos topped with a Custard Taiyaki

As promised, I am back at Somi Somi to get the sesame flavour! The ice cream was mostly for Mum and June though.

Somi Somi | Katy, Texas | Red Bean Taiyaki and Taro Taiyaki
Red Bean Taiyaki and Taro Taiyaki

I ordered the Taiyakis to try. Not as crispy as the empty ones for the ice cream. This had more of a chew to it. They could do better with the filling where instead of putting a glob in the middle they pipe so that it is more evenly distributed. I’d stick to the ones for the ice creams going forward.

It’s been a very stress-free, food-induced weekend. Four day work week here we come!

Somi Somi | Katy, Texas

Gardetto's Garlic Rye Chips & Smartfood Flamin' Hot White Cheddar Popcorn

Okay, first things first, did y’all know that they make these two different bags of goodies? I have only found them in Ohio/Pennsylvania and shipped these to myself when I was up there. If I can get it in Texas please let me know where because they are so so so so so so good!

JJ and his Wooden Whistle

After working so many hours during vacation and preceding to stay late since I got back, I made an executive decision to leave early today. I went over to Mallory’s and gave JJ his presents from my trip.

One of them was a wooden whistle that sounds like a train. Sadly, Lacy got ahold of it and chewed it to bits. Mallory ordered one online since JJ wasn’t too happy about it.

Chicken and Rice by Mallory

She made dinner and shared some with me. Super simple but super perfect since I wasn’t too hungry. Plus we had plans to go out once John got home.

Somi Somi Soft Serve & Taiyaki | Katy, Texas

We went to a Korean beauty store before stopping by Somi Somi for ice cream and Taiyaki. I ordered ube and milk swirl while Mallory opted for Oreo. I tried the black sesame and fell in love with that one as well but chose ube for the colour. I will definitely be back for the black sesame. Hoping they’d do a ube and black sesame swirl soon.

The Taiyaki was on point. Although for the ice cream it’s hollow on the inside and they only slather the filling in the wall cavities it was a perfect pair. We both got it with custard filling. I’d love to go back and get the ones where the filling is encased inside.

We walked to 85 Degree bakery. I haven’t set foot in one since Scruffy and I broke up. It was kind of tough to see the breads him and his family would have loved. We walked to HMart after that and called it a night.

Tomorrow is Friday! I’m excited it’s the weekend because it only means next week is a four day work week! Weeeeeeeee!
