Happy Daddy Day!

June 19, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

I woke up with a text from Sissy that consisted of purples, yellows, and blues. She and Brett are out of town for a couple of weddings. Can you guess what the picture was?

When I asked if she had caught the bouquet, her response was that “It hit me in the face!” That would happen to her. I doubt she was meaning to catch it so I guess it’s meant to be! Now we wait for a proposal. 😉

Now that we’re done with that story, Happy Father’s Day!! Dad got this day off work so we can celebrate and have family time. With Sissy gone and Brudda in Dallas I was all that was left along with Mum and June. Since Dad’s birthday was just a couple of weeks ago we always buy a big present for his birthday and nothing for Father’s day. This time was a new laptop which he loves and has used daily.

Dim Sum King | Houston, Texas

We had brunch at Dim Sum King.

Dim Sum King | Houston, Texas | Dim Sum

The ten dishes we ordered. Mmmm … this is a pretty good dim sum place and clean. They are a tiny little restaurant, especially in the front where people walk in. When we have to wait for seats, I feel like we are packed sardines.

They have wonderful service – attentive and no mistakes.

Dim Sum King | Houston, Texas | Check

On the left is the breakdown of all the foods we ordered. Each dish represents a cost and that’s how they track how much we pay at the end.

There’s a tea fee. (Say that ten times fast.) But everything is reasonably priced.

I would suggest you come here and try their dishes. I hope they relocate to a bigger place. They would make so much more money!

Yannick Cafe Bakery | Houston, Texas

In the same shopping mall is a DVD/magazine place that my parents went into while June and I opted to go into Yannik Cafe Bakery.

Yannick Cafe Bakery | Houston, Texas | Desserts

Look at the array of desserts they sell. Yum! And they are so beautifully decorated.

Yannick Cafe Bakery | Houston, Texas | Egg Tart

Egg Tart | $0.80

We stood in line for our egg tarts and I could taste the buttery flavour of the flaky crust and smooth custard. Sadly it wasn’t as flaky as other egg tarts but it was still good.

Raymond Lam | Let's Get Wet Concert

We headed into the DVD/music store my parents were at and ended up picking up Raymond Lam’s Let’s Get Wet concert. I still listen to Chinese music even though I immigrated here when I was four and a half. Fluent Chinese speaker right here! He’s not the best singer but my favourite song from him is on it.

Mellie Dee | Knitted Hat

Parents then headed to the optomitrist so June and I went to various stores to goof off. Like this gem – a cute, little knitted hat.

Tapioca House | Houston, Texas

They took longer than anticipated so we chilled at Tapioca House.

Tapioca House | Houston, Texas | Milk Tea

Milk Tea Tapioca | $1.99 + $0.55 (for large)

The regular sized is June’s and the large was for me so that I could share with the parentals. Tiny tapioca balls are better than the regular and the drink was perfect for such a hot day. Dad drank it all before Mum even got out of the eye exam room!

We went home to relax and unwind. Dinner was coming up. (Our family goes crazy eating when it’s a special day.)

Lei Lai Restaurant | Houston, Texas

Hours later we drove back out to Lei Lai Restaurant. So much driving.

Lei Lai Restaurant | Houston, Texas | Dinner for Four

Dinner for Four [Crab Meat Soup with Fish Maw; Salt Baked Chicken (half); Fillet of Sole (steamed) with Mixed Vegetable; Salted Pepper Squid; Garlic Vegetable; Pan Fried Noodle with Soy Sauce] | $39.50

Lei Lai Restaurant | Houston, Texas | Eggplant with Beef Clay Pot

Eggplant with Beef Clay Pot

Horrible picture but we added in the clay pot since it’s everyone’s favourite. We usually take it home and Mum puts in more eggplants to make it a bigger dish since there’s so much sauce.

Lei Lai Restaurant | Houston, Texas | Tapioca Dessert

Tapioca Dessert | free

Everyone came home doing their chores and such and now only Mum and I are awake. I love winding down after such a busy day. Night!

San Dong | Houston, Texas

San Dong | Houston, Texas

On May 27th, Mum and June and I went to San Dong. Best dumpling place ever. We ordered a few plates to share and took the rest home for Dad and used it as part of our dinner. Yum! I love leftovers.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Peanut Mixture

June wanted this mixture of peanuts, carrots, and zucchini with a slimy sauce. The slime deferred me from liking it.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Pig Ears

Pig Ears

I know what you’re thinking … GROSS?! But don’t hate it til you try it. I wish people would eat it before they judge. Sometimes it’s better than they think! It’s just your mind playing a joke on you because if you don’t try it, you’re missing out!

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Wenchou Won Ton Soup

Wenchou Won Ton Soup | $4.75

Mum’s favourite. The wontons had very thin wrapper and the meat inside was pretty soft. I ate a lot of the bok choy though.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Beef Soup Dumplings

Beef Soup Dumplings [12 dumplings] | $5.25

The soup has more flavor of a beef stock. Because these are dumplings, their wrapper is thicker and with a bit of a chew to it. It was good but the soup was too salty for my taste. June loved this one the most.

San Dong | Houston, Texas| Leek Pork Dumplings

Leek Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25

This is like the previoius dish but without the soup (and more dumplings!). This was the first dish I ever had when I first came here and remains my favourite.

San Dong | Houston, Texas | Cabbage Pork Dumplings

Cabbage Pork Dumplings [15 dumplings] | $5.25

Until I tried this! Much juicier than the leek pork dumplings. My new favorite.

Just doing this post makes me want to go here this weekend. I would definitely order the Cabbage Pork Dumplings – but not to share.

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas

Family day continued to Herman Park then Star Ice & Teriyaki for lunch.

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas | #12 Beef Noodle Soup

#12 Beef Noodle Soup | $4.75

I’m usually not a big fan of this dish since the noodles are either under-cooked or too overcooked and the meat is usually tough. I was shocked. The noodles had the right bounce to it and the meat was super tender. It’s one of their most known dishes and now I know why.

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas | #29 Spicy Squid (Fried)

#29 Spicy Squid (Fried) | $3.00

Little fried critters are always a fan favourite. Usually squid comes out chewy but this was perfect with just the right crunchy texture on the outside.

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas | #2 Beef Teriyaki

#2 Beef Teriyaki | $4.28

My first thought when they brought this out was that I wouldn’t be full from it but boy was I wrong. Definitely enough food for one especially since we did other other things to share.

Star Ice & Teriyaki | Houston, Texas | #37 Spicy Chicken Nuggets

#37 Spicy Chicken Nuggets | $3.00

Just like the squid but with moist, tender chicken inside. It went really well with the rice.

This is a great place to go to when you just want a quick snack. They have tapioca drinks as well but we didn’t bother with that.

Golden Wok | San Antonio, Texas

January 16, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

AV and I got hungry around dinner time last night and he felt like Chinese food so we decided to go to Golden Wok.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Hot & Sour Soup

Hot & Sour Soup [chicken, crabmeat, bamboo shoots, black mushrooms, tofu, and egg prepared in a rich spicy chicken broth] | $3.49

We both started out with soups. Some Chinese restaurants tend to mess this up but this place has some good soup.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Singapore Noodles

Singapore Noodles [thin rice noodles stir-fried with cabbage, carrots, scallions, bell pepper, and egg with curry flavor with beef] | $9.29

I ordered it with beef but you could get it with chicken, shrimp, scallops, or a combination of it all. This tasted like what I usually eat back in Houston. Nothing to rave about.

Golden Wok |San Antonio, Texas | Sesame Chicken

Sesame Chicken [chicken with sesame] | $8.29

AV’s chicken came with steamed rice. The chicken pure, white breast and was really juicy on the inside.

Of course, nothing beats Houston’s Chinatown but if I was to crave Chinese food, I would go here to be partially satisfied.
