Got Crabs?!

June 23, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

License Plate | Skeet

I tend to look at license plates and saw this as I was driving into work this morning.

Blue Shell Crabs

I’m not a big fan of crabs but I was craving it and it magically appeared!

Blue Shell Crab Cholesterol

Dad had the day off and bought some crabs. My favourite part is the orange goodness aka cholesterol. YUM!

Rocky

As this cutey is chilling on my bed, slowly falling asleep, I’m currently waiting for a fluffy chiffon cake to bake up in the oven. Mum wants to bring one to her co-workers so I was put to work.

Organization Woes

June 23, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

There is an organization called the Filipino Student Association (FSA). No, I’m not Filipino, though I’ve been told I can pass as one.

Anyway, last school year I was nominated to be in the running for Philanthropy Chair. I love volunteering and was thrilled I was picked. I was also nominated for various other chairs but I turned those down.

At the end, I won and had so many ideas on what we could do to help others.

But when our future President said a few words of how he wants more new members from this year to be an officer to get ready for the Goodphil ’13 since we were in line to host it got me thinking. He even brought in two of those new members to become officers … but had no title. None of the elected officers knew their positions.

For a month and a half now, those words stung me in the heart. I am to graduate in May 2012. I am definitely not a “new member” and wasn’t going to be there for Goodphil ’13. So who am I to stand in the way of those who need to learn for the future, right?

Today, I made my decision. I called up the President to tell him my thoughts and how I was willing to step down and give my chair away but he didn’t answer.

So I went and called one of the girls he brought in. She was happy and totally accepted it on the spot. Given I told her it was up to all the other officers. (I’m sure they’ll say yes.)

I texted the President my thoughts and how she was willing to accept. I guess it’s the waiting game from here on out.

I’m starting to regret it but I’ll still be part of FSA even if I’m not an officer.

At least I’m still the Technology Chair for the For The Kids (FTK) organization. You’ll hear more about that in the future.

Okay, back to work.

Smart Dog

June 22, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

I woke up this morning forgetting that I finished my tube of toothpaste the night before. I yell downstairs to ask Mum if she had an extra.

She goes and puts a bag around Rocky’s neck and sticks the toothpaste inside. We trained our dog to deliver things to members of our household. Each of us has our own names we go by when we talk to Rocky.

This picture was taken two/three months ago. Look at him yawn. Our dog can be dumb at times but definitely more of a smartypants.

Cailtin from Happy Tipping Point just posted about her dog, Maggie, and how she’s dumb. Don’t worry she loves her dog just as much as I love my dog.

Appreciation

June 17, 2011 by Mellie Dee 1 Comment

We always take life for granted and think we’re invincible. But a story I just read and a video I just watched put everything in a new perspective for me. I’m grateful for my life. The fact that I *knock on wood* haven’t been severely injured. With a loving family and friends by my side. Shelter and food. My own car to get around in. Etc. Etc. The story made me realize that I have it good. Much more than a lot of other people in the world. I will try more to appreciate the little things and complain a lot less. Here’s the story paraphrased by what I read:

Madeline Mitchell

Meet Madeline Mitchell, a contestant in the Miss Alabama USA pageant. As she was going home one day in September 2008 everything changed. She hit a deer and lost control of her car causing her to go off a 40-foot ravine while the car caught on fire.

She wouldn’t have been alive today if it wasn’t for the Walmart truck driver, Gary Lewellen. He went in to put the fire out and reassured her she would be okay. And sure enough, she was air-lifted to the University of Alabama hospital.

For 12 days, she was stuck in a coma while her parents watched over her. When she woke up, her question was “Am I going to be able to compete in the pageant?

Doctors told her she may never walk again since her leg was broken in 12 places, broken ribs, etc. And people told her she would never be able to compete again due to her many scars.

But she proved them wrong. After months of struggling, she indeed walked again and participated in 2009 Miss Alabama USA pageant but failed to make top 10. She didn’t let that stop her and continued to participate last year and won.

This Sunday she will be competing in the Miss USA at the Miss USA 2011 pageant in Las Vegas. Go here for a more in-depth story and a heartwarming, tear-jerking video of her interview.

I know a lot of people think beauty pageant contestants are jerks, high maintenance, rich snobs, etc. but after watching this they are just like us. Real people. They are not invincible no matter how put together they are. I’m not going to lie. I always wished I was in a beauty pageant because they are so pretty and put together!

Take time out of your day to appreciate everything you have.

Why, Oh, Why?!

June 16, 2011 by Mellie Dee Leave a Comment

Work tends to tempt us with lunch but I resisted like a good, little girl. I ate my leftovers and didn’t let the delicious aromas get to me. Winning.

I came home and my mum was making Kimchi Soup for dinner. Even better. Ate dinner with mum and June while Rocky sat close by. Life is going swell. Oh here’s a picture of the dogs I mentioned before.

Aren’t they cuties?!

I sat down to change my B string. Previously I said my A broke but it was really my B. Whoops! But yeah … that’s when everything went sour. As I was winding up my string it popped on me. WHY?!! Again?! Puhlease! Now I have to reorder new strings. It sucks they come in a pack and not individuals. I think I’ll ask my friend to change them for me. I should learn though but I have no money to keep repurchasing packets and packets of strings.

For those that are by the coast, it’s hurricane season! Make sure you have a plan! I was talking about it with the two co-workers that stopped by to chat. We talked about what we had to do if anything major happened like contact your line manager.

Do you have a plan for hurricane season?
